I'm absolutely clueless with phones so here goes....
...got a Nokia 6700 yesterday to replace a VERY old handset that I had. Since I have switched it on it continually has a letter G next to the signal indicator and also an arrow. I looked it up in the manual and it says that this G means I'm registered to a GPRS network. Does this mean I'm being charged as though on the internet all the time the G is there. Also, what does the arrow mean? And it also has a 3.5. Please help. I've checked the Packet Data in Settings and made sure it says "only when necessary" but if I am connected to the internet or GPRS (don't know the difference) I don't know what as I've not done anything with the phone other than put it on! Again, please help me!

Don't worry, you'll only be charged for data if you actually do anything, not just because you're connected. The 3.5 simply means that you're connected to a 3G mast. This won't make any difference to ordinary calls, but does use slightly more power. If you never plan to use the phone for data, you could turn off 3G in the settings and your battery will last longer. Any data connections yo umake will be slower than they would be on 3G, though.
As well as choosing the "when required" option, which you have, it's also a good idea to set "always ask before connecting". That way your phone can't start accessing data without your knowledge.
If the "G" is constantly showing, then a connection has been made that has to be terminated. If you open the browser but don't actually access any sites, you can close it (choose Options and then scroll down to Exit, don't use the "back" key), that should do it. If not ,turning the phone off and then on again should also do the trick.

if you want to stop this happening do the following
(using a 6700 slide to recall this so apologies if slightly different! - Nokia stop moving things about!!!!)
menu > settings> (there could be another settings menu here too, select that)> Connection> Packet Data
when in packet data setting page first option should be "Packet Data Connection" select that and change to "When needed".
go back, back back and it should stop the arrows coming up, the 3G and 3.5G will still come up but they indicate signal type!

tips for you as a new symbian user
hold down the home button to see active apps, Menu and standby are there all the time and meant to be there any others you want to close press the 'c' delete key and select yes!
if you want pretty themes go to tehkseven.net and look through there selection! (my son found the vodafone default one a bit annoying!)
