Recieved Nokia N8 Today!

Hi All,

I recieved the Nokia N8 today, and I have started to take unboxing pictures etc.

My main goal is to compare the Carl Zeiss 12MP Camera of the N8 to my Olympus DSLR.

If anyone has anything they would like me to check out for them, please post on this thread. I will do my best to answer any and all questions.

If you have an N8 and can offer some advice please do so. It would be great to make this interactive.

The blog looks great! Am pleased you're getting on with the phone already.

How was the setup process? Was is simple enough to move your contacts across?

Suprised to see the comparable quality of the photos, that's really impressive! I'll continue to read with interest :smileyhappy:

Re: Check out My Blog!

Great idea!

The images are a lot closer than i expected them to bem, I can really see what you mean about the brightness though, It does let it down. Would be good to see how it handles a nighttime image, the brightness mightw well benefit the N8 then!

Hi Nabs,

Great idea!

I'm going to try and get to Clifton Suspension Bridge in the next couple of Days. It would be great to do some Dusk and Night shots with the bridge lit up!

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Nokia N8 Setup

Setting up a new Phone can always bring it's share of problems.

Not in the case of the N8!

All I can say is WOW, how easy was that!

From turning on the phone for the first time you are guided through a setup wizard. This involves setting up your location worldwide, time, date, etc.

Importing Contacts was a breeze, I had made sure to copy all my contacts to my sim card. It was then a simple case of selecting copy contacts from Sim to Phone. 46 contacts moved in less than a second!

From the home screen you can add your Favourite Contacts to a Widget which will scroll through your list. This is done by simply ticking which contacts to add to the Home screen widget.

You can then use the very impressive camera to take pics of your friends and family to use as their avatars.

Importing my Gmail account again was a simple tap of an option from one of the Home screens (3 in Total). All I had to do was type in my Gmail address and password.

Job Done!

Symbian is a very intuitive OS, with a structure reminiscent of windows explorer in it's Hierarchy layout.

This makes it all very familiar, and the deep thud of the Haptic feedback gives a reassuring confidence that you have actually pressed something.

The Capacitive screen is Bright, Colourful and generally very pleasing to the eye. Scrolling is very fluid and sometimes can be a bit too fast.

I am right handed, all the buttons for me, are exactly where I would expect them to be. I especially like the easy, lock screen button.

Re: Check out My Blog! - Day 2 Comparison

Hi Everyone,

Day 2:

I woke this morning to the alarm of the Nokia N8. I like the Clock screensaver, very useful at night. The Alarm starts quietly and gradually increases to a deafening level, (if you let it) The screen illuminates to the Home screen displaying a Red Stop button.

Comparison:

I decided to take some pics using Flash today. I didn't think the pictures were going to be that exciting. How wrong could I be.

The N8 was first, keeping everything pretty much stock, I enabled the manual Flash. I chose to take a photo indoors of one of the Wife's Snow Globes. I was initially very pleased with the picture and the level of detail is amazing!

SnowGlobe.jpg

Only after taking the Photo using the Olympus Camera did I notice something quite incredible...

See it HERE

Have a look at the Blog, then come back here and post your thoughts!

First thing I don't like:

I use mobile email a lot during the day, it is essential for me to keep in touch with certain people.

The N8 was a dream to setup my Gmail. The mail comes through to the phone immediately which is what I need.

However, the problem comes when you need to reply to an email. Emails appear as Conversations, which is great as you can reference back to previous information. The problem is the sensitive scrolling action of the N8. While typing in Landscape (Full Qwerty) it is easy to start an upward scroll. This is difficult to control and makes finding where you were very difficult. I had to close and reopen the email 4 times. I eventually gave up and resorted to the PC. Not so easy when your out, "in the field!"

Any N8 users out there, like to share some tips?

Thanks for the update TSD!

That's certainly interesting about the camera, though I guess the image is still pretty great for a mobile phone...

Yes I agree, I have to stop myself from refering to the N8 as a Camera!

I have to say that the N8 offers great value for money! You get a good phone, a wonderful Camera and a HD Video camera as well.

If you are on a tight budget, this does offer a superb bargain!

There are settings that can be changed on the device, i would also check to make sure you have the maximum picture quality selected in the camera settings as the device comes with it pre-set as 8MP not the 12.
If i have helped please feel free to click on the Thumbs Up below

[ Edited ]

Just read your day five blog update TSD. The difference in the two photos is unbelievable!

It reminds me of some photos we took at the McLaren Technology Centre last year though. I was using a Sony compact and a colleague was using a DSLR of some sort. At close range (like the flower shot you took on the first day) the difference between them was negligible, but then as you broaden the view, the two really start to step apart. Factoring in limited light as well seems to be the final straw! Closeup example faraway example

Still, I think the shots are great for a phone, particularly when you think it's only ten years since that Sony Ericsson MCA-20 Communicam I posted a picture of in the retro phones thread.

Glad you like the Blog Tom. :smileyhappy:

I have been at Longleat Safari Park today. My Daughter has had a display of her farm animals there. I took a lot of pics using the N8, I am sorting through them now, so will upload later.

I also took some great video, so will try and get that on as well.

Re: Check out My Blog! - Day 2 Comparison

are you getting much use from the USB to phone adapter and the HDMI adapter?

When I first saw the phone that's what most appealed to me - a friend was able to link up directly to his HD TV via the HDMI adapter (needs a HDMI TV cable though, not provided) and playback HD video he'd shot at an England game, really impressive.

The USB adapter is a nice feature although it's been made a bit redundant for me now as I use DropBox to sync my iPhone and desktops.

Re: Check out My Blog! - Day 2 Comparison

@redpages

I am using the USB to Phone adapter all the time! I have been transfering photos and video to my Laptop using this cable. Nice that it charges from this cable at the same time.

I am really impressed with the quality of 720p HD video from this Phone. I am in the process of uploading some video to youtube (not done it before) so you will be able to see the results for yourself.

The HDMI cable provided is very short approx 5", with USB at the other end. I connected this to my DVD recorder and Burnt a DVD directly from the Phone. This is a real winner for me! No messy converting for hours on end, just press play on the phone and press record. Job Done!

Nokia N8 - Video

[ Edited ]

This Video was taken using the Nokia N8.

The Animals belong to my eldest Daughter. She has been at Longleat Safari Park. She has set up a petting zoo, where children can feed the lambs and cuddle them. There are other small Farm animals as well.

I was impressed at how quick i could take the N8 out of my pocket and start filming. This is where a device like this wins! The quality is really good! Shame about the cameraman!

(Press play then Change the playback option to 720p HD)

Arthur the pot Belly Pig! Arthur was recued from a ground floor flat, he had been kept in a broom cupboard. We don't think he was abused, but probably over loved and fed too much. He is now half the weight he was and is learning to eat proper food.

The zoom feature on the video is a bit jerky moving in and out, but to be honest considering the Quality of the video and the fact that it's very much pocket sized I am really pleased with the results.

What do you think?

Re: Nokia N8 - Video

the zoom seems to be a big jumpy,  I would prefer if it was smooth continous montion.

The actual quality really is excellent!

Re: Nokia N8 - Video

I'm really shocked by the video quality!

Totally agree with Nabs about the zoom though, reminds me of an old digital camera I used to have that could video at different zooms, but to change the zoom you had to stop recording and start again!
