Voda / Nokia - Can Somebody Confirm Re Oem Car Holder

was thinking about getting the nokia car holder for my nice new 97 some time soon. even though the cost is pure extortion i'm sure it'll be a well made bit of kit that i'll appreciate in the long run.

my question for the team is about temperature though...

this weekend i drove for a couple of hundred miles down south and the sun was beaming into my dash almost all the way. we already know the 97 gps is pants when directly under the roof and it seems from the pics that the nokia car holder will have the phone sitting right inside the windscreen anyway.

can vf/nokia/both please confirm before i do this that the phone is able to handle sitting on the windscreen in the sun for a long drive? hopefully the design of the holder should protect it from the worst of the direct light but i'd imagine it will still get quite toasty up there...?

personally i would think that it should be able to handle this kind of thing as it's one of the phone's key selling points, but you never know....

thanks,

J

I assume this is the holder you are talking about http://www.nokia.co.uk/find-products/acces...e-holder-cr-116 I would not buy that in a month of sundays! The reason being is that it does not appear to be a suction mount as in the pull a clip and it sucks in type, it appears to be the push against the screen type. The reason why i say this is i have a Tom Tom and this comes with the "push on type" and no suction pull and its always falling off the screen.

I bought one from ebay for £6.99p and it came with a car charger as well and it works superbly

Well i have had my say

thanks madboy, a useful hint there.

can you offer a link or a photo to the one you got from ebay? always great to bag something that's already been tested!

Hi John,

I wouldn't like to say that the phone would be able to be in direct sunlight for long periods of time - I'd think the touch screen may be a little sensitive for that

I know that you want the device as cklose to the windscreen as possible, but it'd probably be better if you kept it in a little shade ;)

The Manual lists the temperature range for the Battery to be 15C to 25C which seems like a ridiculously narrow window to me, but I imagine you can go 5 degrees either way without bad effects, the main note is that high temperatures will shorten/damage your batter life significantly.

In fact the worst thing you can do is Charge a hot battery.

Voda / Nokia - Can Somebody Confirm Re Oem Car Holder

hi dan,

thanks for the info.

PaulE, a couple of things...

1) can you pleeeeease respond to any one of my recent posts and let me know what address to send my old n97 back to. it's sitting on the shelf at home at the moment.

2) satnav is one of the usp's of the phone. the OEM car holder will put the phone right under the windscreen. it gets hot under the windscreen. the phone cannot handle the hotness. therefore satnav can't be used. Can you see the irony here?

Can you please get an official line from nokia on the car holder/temp issue before i throw away forty quid and melt my 97?

Thanks,

John

John,

This does'nt answer your specific questions, but just thought I'd add that I've just ordered a car mount off of Ebay.

It isn't one of the long bendy arm ones, but is more like the Nokia one.
Also very favourable comments on another forum, also supposidly works in landscape or portrait ?

If anyones interested, I'll post a piccy when I get it . . . . . .

Yes please scooby, i have got one off e-bay that is really good and turns but the arm is just a tad to long, i hope the one you have ordered has the suck to screen rather than the push to screen!

If it does have suck to screen (you pull a lever) i hope you will post the e-bay link mate

Hi Madboy

Sorry you feel that way, however if I left it visible, it would be allowing the advertisement of that item on the forum and that is not what the forum is for.

Sorry.

Hi Claire,

Fair doo's, what about if we post the sellers 'ebay' name - its in the public domain - so to speak, and may help other N97 owners, if they want to track it down and purchase ?

Hi ScoobyDo

Thanks for understanding :)

Im sure if other members would like an item such as this they could search for it themselves on Ebay?

Not sure about melting but for the N97 Nokia state environmental conditions as:

-10C to 55C: Normal operation within spec
55C to 70C: Reduced performance, operational for short periods
-40C to -15C and 70C to 85C: Operation not guaranteed but attempts will not cause damage
<-40C and >85C: Attempt to operate may cause damage
-15C to 55C: Charging allowed
0C to 85C: Storage
Relative humidity range: 5 to 95%

John A, that's some useful info, thanks!

can you give us a hint as to where you got it? I rang nokia and they just regurgitated the manual to me, 15-25 degreesC. a quick google revealed that the normal op range for an in-car sat nave is around 0-40, one even said this is based on likely in car temps for the location of the device.

if your info is correct then we have no worries!

to the mods - i'd really appreciate it if scooby or madboy could somehow let me know which holder (landscape please!) they've bought. there are literally hundreds on sale on ebay, so to be able to find one that has been tried and tested by a trusted forum member would be a great help.

scooby/madboy perhaps you could pm me with the link instead, i'd really appreciate it.

thanks,

John

Heya Guys,

Unfortunately we don't have a PM function on the eForum and links to sites that are selling products are not allowed on the Vodafone eForum however, if scooby/madboy wish to say how they get to the site without a link and give the name of the car kit then this will be fine.

Any problems give us a shout.

I use the Nokia Universal Holder CR-39 and Nokia Holder Easy Mount HH-12. They cost £22 direct from Nokia's online store (as an example price). One thing to note is that when clamping the holder on the phone the foam depresses the Camera button and volume key slightly. I have ended up just creating a couple of cut outs in the foam to mitigate this. other wise it's fine. It supports holding your phone in either Lanscape, good for OVI Maps and portrait. Image below.

Hope this helps.

The data is in Nokia's N97 service manual.
