Vodafone Smart 4 turbo SMS

I am setting up a Vodafone Smart 4 turbo for my sister in law and have a question for you.

When an SMS is sent to the Vodafone Smart 4 turbo, it shows in the top bar, but the green SMS icon on the home screen does not show a '1' for a message recieved. Is this as it should be or is there a setting I need to change?

I assume you've had a look in the message settings.

I have been all thorugh the settings until my eyes bleed. I have even chenged the SMS app, still the same.

I have an HTC One M8 running ChompSMS and when I get a message the icon on the screen has a 1 on it as well as a notification in the top bar. I just wanted to check with someone else who has a Vodafone Smart 4 turbo as it may well be that's what it should be doing.
