Android Market - App recommendations and discussion

[ Edited ]

Hi All,

We've opened this thread for you to discuss Androids Apps downloaded from the Android Market.

Just to clarify, Android Market applications are third party and not directly supported by Vodafone, although our team will be on hand to try and help out whenever possible.

This is brilliant for browsing the apps store:
http://www.cyrket.com/

Found the following apps that are brilliant (in addition to the usual, facebook, last.fm, apps, etc)
- toggle settings (put a short cut on your "desktop" - quick access to all the useful things)
- toggle wifi - helps you switch it on and off, but even better, tells you if you left it on, but not connected to a network (saves battery)
- ambient light sensor - when your phone wakes up, uses the camera to see if your in or out side, and alters the brightness accordingly
- Astro file broswer
- Astrid reminder/todo list
- OI shopping list
- my tracks (records where you been walking/running)
- jogtacker - similar to the above, but upload your runs, really cool
- facebook sync - gets all your contacts photos from facebook
- night clock
- weather channel & weather bug
- bubble (sprit level)
- iTubeStatus (usueful for london!)
- shazam (find out the song playing)
- Barcode scanner (uses camera, snaps bar code - looks it up on the internet - brilliant)
- Qype radar - find bars/restaurants near you
- phonalyzr - cool stats about your incoming calls
- wifi scanner - quickly shows you wifi networks near you
- fotmob and scooer liverscores - a must of football fans !

On the G1 have used better cuts and POI search - but they are paid apps.

Vodafone people - as I said - good to know that its not me going mad about paid apps, but could you feed back to the powers that be:
- wouldn't have hurt to email/publish/leaflet in the box that you cant access the paid store
- email customers when the paid store is coming online

Having so much fun with the HTC Magic - best purchase I ever made !!

Hi andyh1877

I've had a quick search for AVI player and there is an AVI Player on there however it is a charge-able app. Just searh AVI on the market.

Perhaps some other eForum members will be able to lend a hand in suggesting some other apps that will do this for you :)

Let me know if you have any more questions and we'll be more than happy to help

Thanks

Wayne

A very good free ebook FB2 reader (not from Market place - you'll need to download it directly from their website):
FBReaderJ

One word of caution - since this software is not from Market Place, you'll need to grant permission to install 'Unknown Source App'. To re-enable protection after install, go to:

Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources (deselect)

Ebuddy is a good MSN client, possibly the best, haven't had issues with it yet unlike Palringo and Meebo IM that i did have problems with.

Only thing is they need to update the magic version so u can change ur display picture.

I'm looking to get the SDK when I get my Magic, then make my own apps. Who knows, these "when will it do this?" questions may very soon be answered....

So far my favourite FREE apps are:

My Tracks - A google app that uses yout phones GPS to track your movements and give you statistics like average speed, min/max gradient, max speed, distance travelled etc. You can upload all this info to google maps (My Maps) to view online. Combine this with the My Maps Editot app and you can add photos taken on your phone en route to any waypoints you have created. The end results being a kind of interactive map of stats and pics of your trip / walk / whatever.

Toggle Settings (make sure it's the cupcake one) - Brilliant app for quickly toggling on and off wifi, bluetooth, silent mode, ring type (ring, ring and vibe etc). Also allows you to setup timed profiles. So I have my phone to automaticlly switch to Night mode (i.e silent), and then Home mode, and work mode based on configurable rules.

Note Everything - A excellent free notes app that has different kinds of notes e.g. Voice, Text, Paint that can be arranged into folders, and searched.

beebPlayer - for viewing BBC iPlayer. Works best on WiFi but does work on 3G connection too. bad for the battery life though. Also lets you watch live BBC channels. no radio though.

aTrackDog - Keep track of your installed apps and keep them upto date. Allows you to check for updates for all installed apps in one go.

Shazam - Everyone loves this one. Hold your phone up to the radio, or somewhere a song is playing and it will take a short sample and identify the song for you!

Twidroid - A very good Twitter Client if you are into Tweeting.

ShopSavvy - Similar to the barcode scanner already mentioned. Lets you scan bar codes and search for the best prices based on your location.

Scoreboard - Google's own sports results tracker. Set up favourites and custom alerts for your favourite football teams. mostly US based but included all the English leagues and teams.

Sky Map - Another google app. You phone displays an image of the night sky and based on where you move the phone it shows you what you should be seeing in the night sky. Also allows you to search and get directed to points of interest. e.g. search for "Mars" and the display will show you where to turn / look to find mars via the onscreen display.

The best apps that I've found so far that haven't been mentioned:

Gmote 2.0 - Access media files on your computer; works both ways.
Translate - Really good translation service with a simple UI
AppsInstaller - Used to install apk files
Throttle Copter - Flash Helicopter on your Magic
TuneWiki - Plays mp3 files with perks
Meridan Player - Best media player I've found
PicSay - Photo Editor
MemoryForLemmings - Used to free memory
Advanced Task Manager - Closes useless and idle apps
Sticky Note - Widget for home page that creates sticky notes
ChompSMS - Nicer UI than the basic messaging app
Joyity - Should be a really fun app once it becomes more popular in the UK
Robo Defense - Best game on android; don't expect to get any work done after downloading it
TextOnPhone - Free Book reading service that lets you read from a wide variety of books like The Great Gatsby to Freakonomics

Any good recommended games at all? What are people's favourites? I'm eager for something fun to play during breaks and days off.

In terms of games, I'm quite addicted to Archipelago and Torect. Both are paid for , so download the free/lite versions first and try them out.

Also Lumbricidae is pretty good if you like accelerometer games...and controlling a worm.
