Unknown icons on Vodafone Smart 4 mini

At the top left of the screen there are two icons which are not explained in the User Manual.  

Both are small rectangles.  One contains a tick, the other a solid triangle similar to a Play button.

What are they?

Don't have a Smart 4 mini in front of me just now but I would guess (based on experience with android) that they are going to be either an update awaiting installation or a failed app download.
If you swipe down from the top of the screen it should open up more details about them.
Alternatively if you are able to post a picture I could take a look.

There's no mention, as far as I can see, of how to take screenshaots either in the Maual or in the 'phone.

A web search suggested a couple of crafty simultaneous button presses, Power button and  Lower Volume.

The lower part of the volume bar no longer works.  So I can't take screenshots.

The button combo you mention would be the usual method for Android devices.
If the button is no longer working just would suggest sending the phone away for repair to see if there is anything physical wrong with it.
Your local VF store should be able to arrange this.
