Vodafone 858 internet connection

I have a Vodafone 858 that is regularly connecting to the internet to update data. I am being charged for this at least £1 a day. I want to turn this off. Most websites talk about turning off packet data but I can find no reference to this on this phone. So how do I stop this phone accessing the internet unless I want it to?

I know its 2 years late but I found the answer:

Menu>wireless & network settings> Mobile networks.

first thing that pops up is "Data enabled". Untick this box.

now will only use wifi (free) rather than your credit

@turtles87

Goto > Menu > Settings > WiFi & Networks... There should be a tick box for Use Packet Data.

OR

Long press on the Power button. A menu should appear, you can select to turn off data.

Hope that helps?

Thanks for the response. I can find nothing called Packet Data on this phone. I have turned off every possible thing I can think about that looks like it might have something to do with connecting to the internet. This includes WiFi, data enabled and data roaming. I have even gone into Running Services and stopped everything in there but they turn back on especially if the phone is turned off and back on again.

There must be some way of stopping this phone accessing the internet randomly.

This was not explained when I bought the phone nor is there anything in the literature about this.

Hi turtle87,

Wi-Fi does not need to be disabled - you don't get charged for using free hotspots or home networks - so you can turn this back on.

As with most modern phones, the internet connection is an integral feature on the Vodafone Smart 858, so whilst it can be temporarily disabled, some features, including certain services, will often connect to update themselves, such as gps-based services or apps with push notifications. This would generally need to be disabled on each of the services in turn to prevent automatic connections.

If you're unable to disable the individual services then a more direct approach may be needed. As you want to be able to use it on occasion, simply switching off the access at this end is not an option, but there is something similar you can try at your end.

Data connections require a recognised APN to be usable on the network, and this is set on the network. If you check the instructions in our help centre for setting up the internet on a Vodafone 858 Smart, you'll see that these include a username and password setting. If you change the password and save this, then the data connection will not be allowed, and you can then simply switch this back as and when you need it.

Let us know if this helps.

Followed the instructions. Would I expect to see a prompt asking for my password when I then connect to the internet? Having followed the instructions, I have then connected to the internet but no prompt for a password and connects. I have turned off various applications individually. I have then turned the phone off and back on again and these same applications have started accessing the internet. So it would appear that changing the password has not worked.

Hi there turtle87,

If that's not helped then you may need to remove the APN's altogether.

Please follow the steps provided in the link from Dave. You can then delete the APN altogether. This will need to be added in again if you would like to connect when you are out and about.

Failing that there's only so much we can do without physically having the device in front of us. In this case I'd urge you to speak to one of the in store specialists.

Find your local store

Cheers,
