How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

[ Edited ]

I've recently switched to Vodafone pay as you go and the signal seems good but I hate receiving all the spam texts from Vodafone about Rewards and Big Bundles.

I've tried sending STOP to the number they specify (9774). I've tried sending STOP ALL. No confirmation reply and nothing changes.

I've even tried forwarding the texts to the number Vodafone has (7726) for tracking and helping with spam, but it wasn't able to help me either.

If anyone can help with stopping these texts then I would be grateful Smiley Happy Then I can go back to just receiving texts about things I care about.

Hi @markedmonds

You could ring Vodafone on 191 or use Live Chat to opt out of marketing.

If your phone has the facility you could also block numbers via the text blocking feature.

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

Thanks BandOfBrothers, that was very useful information!

The Live Chat was excellent and the assistant was extremely swift and knew exactly what to do.

(I wouldn't recommend 191 for this as I ended up down a rabbit hole of different options and couldn't find a way to actually speak to a person.)

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

Unfortunately still getting these spam texts from Vodafone about rewards - so the live chat didn't work.

The texts still continue to say send STOP to 9774 to end them, but that doesn't work either.

I can't see a way to block the sender - there isn't any number, it just says from "Vodafone" on my phone.

Any other suggestions for who I could speak to to get these stopped?

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

I've since had multiple contacts with the support/help team both on email and by phone all to no avail. These were some of their suggestions:

- turn on premium text barring

- text STOP to 97774 instead of 9774

- they would contact the relevant team directly to stop the spam texts

Unfortunately none of them have worked and I am still receiving these marketing texts, and they still say I can opt out by sending STOP to 9774 which doesn't work. Apart from one which said 9744 which also didn't work.

The end result is I have given up and ordered a new sim so I can switch to a different network provider.

Hi @markedmonds

Let me know the reference number you've received from the email communication with our team; it'll look like this: [#14xxxxxx] - with this I can get this chased up for you.

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

The number is #14140661

But I have already got the PAC code and transferred my number.

It might be useful to find out why the texts couldn't be stopped though. I'm waiting to see if any continue even with a closed account Smiley Happy

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

Thank you, @markedmonds - I can see that our team raised this with our dedicated team for further investigation; they also opted you out of marketing; this can take up to 28 days to action fully on the account.

If you continue to receive messages after the 28 days have ended, please reply to the latest email you've received from our team.

As your contract has now ended, you won't be able to access your online account anymore - any queries can be discussed here, through Live Chat or over the phone however.

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

The last email I received, which was the one saying it would be raised with the marketing team, was on 26th Sept which is 33 days ago (more than the 28 days you mention).

Should I reply to them immediately? (They said they would contact me back when it was done).

Or should I wait another 28 days from now?

Or is there a different date you can see in your database and that I should wait until?

According to the help on your website my next step is suggested to be contacting the ombudsman since it has been nearly 8 weeks since I first raised the issue. (Currently 7.5 weeks ...)

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

So I chased it up with your support team and got a reply on 4th Nov saying that as I have left Vodafone I would not receive any more texts: "As per our discussion as you have already migrated your number to the other service provider the services on your Vodafone account is already deactivated. So you will not receive any text from the Vodafone customer services."

And now 10 days later, guess what?! Yes a new text from Vodafone Rewards. "Make your points go further this Black Friday!". I have no points and have never had any points, what a joke. "To end texts, send STOP to 9774" - simply a plain lie.

Re: How to stop spam texts from Vodafone?

I've been having a very similar problem with Orange / EE for over a year. Despite my numerous letters instructing them to stop spamming me, they continue to do so. I've been sending them an invoice for every text they send me, but I've just had a letter saying they refuse to pay me.

I've researched the legal position and will soon be issuing proceedings against them in the county court. One thing companies do tend to understand is a county court summmons through the letter box.

A company spamming it's customers could be guilty of an offence under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

Other relevant legislation which may be useful if anyone else is experiencing a similar problem, is The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.

The prohibition of unsolicited email also extends to text messages, because they fall within the definition given in the directive.

“electronic mail” means any text, voice, sound or image message sent over a public electronic communications network which can be stored in the network or in the recipient’s terminal equipment until it is collected by the recipient and includes messages sent using a short message service;
