New Zealand iPhone in UK & Europe

Hi,
I will be in the UK & Europe for a few months this year. I'm not wanting to use my iphone on roaming with the NZ sim card plan while there but instead plan to buy a pre-pay (is pay as you go the same thing ?) UK sim card and use that. The NZ iphones are unlocked so that shouldn't be a problem but I'm unsure what happens when I use the iphone in Europe, does it switch to some sort of roaming deal ?
Any tips greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi,
when in Europe you will be charged more as you will be roaming away from your SIM's home network i.e. UK
Details here PAYG Call Charges ....its not as expensive as it used to be but one of the big factors to consider is where you will be calling i.e. to same country, to other European countries or to home i.e. NZ
Mainland Europe is much better catered for with free wifi - hotels, bars, shops - so email/Facebook etc is a very cost effective way to keep in touch and use phone for the "urgent" calls...
Just beware of using your iPhones data connection whilst roaming...
