Hi jon160981,
Upgrading early will never give you as many options as new customers would have as you are still in contract and paying off your existing phone. The £55 goes toward covering the remain costs. If you were to leave it to the actual end date of your contract you would get much better offers, and in a lot of cases much better offers than new customers.
Depending on the tarrif your looking at there may be a way to get you a great deal now!
Best thing to do is contact the @vodafoneukdeals twitter team. They specialise in upgrades and new lines! For info on how to contact them head over here and follow the instructions. They are a small and very popular team so they may not reply straight away, stick around though as one of the team will get back to you as soon as they can.
If you really want to buyout your contract you it will be subect to an early termination fee.
This can be worked out as follows:
(number or months remaining X monthly contract cost) -VAT@20% = Early Termination Fee.
There will also be a 2% discount on your final bill
A call to customer services on 191 will be able to give you the exact figure for your contract.

If you wanted to upgrade at 18 months no charge then you should of gone for an 18 month contract instead of 24 months, early upgrades are 6 months before the end of your contract, changing it so early is essentially breaking the contract on which you signed to commit to for 24 months, that is why there is a fee.
It makes a lot of sense keeping a customer on for the full duration, you should of sat down and thought about how long you were to stick with the contract for, before signing away eager to get a new phone.
You can get an instore upgrade earliest 3 months before the end of your contract.
