Htc Network Trouble

HI Guys

My Vodafone branded HTC has been working fine till a few days ago when the 3G symbol dissapeared, along with my network/phone service, which means I cant make or receive calls. I still have internet access though and I'm using a Voda SIM. I've tried a hard reset but that hasnt helped. How can I solve this?

Thanks

Hi there Ianaluve,

Welcome to the eForum, you have come to the right place for some great advice from the members and us. :D

I need a little bit more information off you before I can diagnose the problem.

I need you full post code so I can check the service in your area, is it only in one specific area?

Have you tried to turn your phone onto 2G, this may increase or even gain a signal for you, finally can you try your SIM in another Vodafone phone? This will determine if the SIM card is faulty or the phone.

Thanks and I look forward to helping you when you come back to us.

Matt

Htc Network Trouble

Hi Matt,

Postcode is M13 0EA, but its not just in my area that I have the problem; its everywhere. I've switched SIMs/ wiped SIMs, hard reset, soft reset etc.
Now, having performed a hard reset, everytime I switch the phone on, it asks me to register a network, which i do, but still - nothing....

Help!

Htc Network Trouble

Hi ianaluve

No problem, if this happens all over then it is very unlikely that it is a network issue.

One definitive way of finding out where the problem lies is to try your SIM in a different handset and see ifyou have the same issue.

Let us know how that goes and we'll further advise you on what you can do :)

Thanks

Wayne

Sounds interesting! If you have internet access you obviously have network access and signal.

Hard reset should have reset any settings that had gone a drift...

It asks you to register to a network when you turn it on though?

What do you have on the following screens?:

Go to...
Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone (or the physical call button -> menu -> options)

On the network tab, what is "network selection" on? Should be on automatic.

On the band tab, what are these 2 drop downs set to? Ideally they should be auto but you can change the top one to GSM (it then just does GPRS for data, I do this to save battery life unless I need 3G...!).

Hi andyh1877,

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. It is possible that the issue is due to your SIM card, which we would normally like to be less than three years old to avoid issues. It will be worth visiting a Vodafone Shop for a replacement so that we can rule this out as a cause.

Beyond that, it sounds like an intermittent cell site fault. Does the problem always happen in the same area? I've checked the serving cell in the postcode area listed in your profile, and although I've found no issues, I can see that you've only got variable 3G coverage, which can mean drop-outs during peak usage. If this isn't where you're experiencing the issue, please let us know the correct postcode, and we'll check this for you as well :)

Hi andyh1877,

I've had a look at the post code and everything looks absolutely fine at the moment, so it's quite possible the SIM card is what's causing the problem. The store will replace it free of charge and you will keep your existing number :)

Also, are you getting this problem only at this address or in other areas too?

Let me know how you get on with the new SIM.

Htc Network Trouble

My HTC Magic decided that it wouldn't send SMS anymore (although it received them fine). The problem did turn out to be with the SIM itself which the Liverpool St station store replaced within minutes.

The problem was that the SIM had lost the SMS Service Centre number and would not allow it to be re-created. New SIM in place, full service restored.

Another SIM issue this morning - I was bringing an ex-T-Mobile G1 on to the Vodafone network, the SIM was working fine in the Sony Ericsson handset. But would not register on to the network with the G1. I cleaned the SIM with a pencil rubber (it must be a clean rubber, no grit) and that got it working again. Why? Sometimes the SIM can get coated with a thin layer of grease from being handled. The "wipe with a clean cloth" doesn't always get all the grease off - but an old engineers trick - the pencil rubber - will get anything off the surface. The rubber was black with grime from the SIMs contacts, although you couldn't see it by naked eye on the SIM itself!! Those synthetic white poly-rubbers work a treat also.

So, try the rubber, if that don't work, take a trip to the Voda store for a replacement SIM.

Hi ha1072,

Welcome to the eForum :) Do you synchronise your HTC with any services Over The Air like Windows Live? It sounds likely that Windows Live Messenger is set to add your online contacts to the address book. Try going into your settings on Messenger and checking whether there is a setting for this.

Keep me posted and if you're still having problems I'll be able to get my hands on an HTC after the weekend to check this out for you!

Thanks,

Adam
