Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

I have been a pay monthly Vodafone customer since 02/11/2011. On the 04/11/2011 I purchased the iPhone 4s (32g) from the Vodafone store in Bognor Regis. My monthly tariff is £62 a month (The handset was free on this tariff.) with a additional £12.99 for handset insurance. On the 04/04/2012 I added a additional line to my account for The New iPad with a £75 upfront charge on a £32 a month tariff with a additional £9.99 for handset insurance. With a small additional fee each month because I pay my bill by invoice I pay circa £120 per month. I spend a lot of my time @ my Fiancee's home, she does not have a landline or broadband connection. So I would use my iPhone 4s as a modem because I had the Data Test Drive on my account but because it expired yesterday all I am left with is one gigabyte per month on my iPhone 4s. Which in my opinion is pitiful to say the least! When I contacted Customer Services yesterday I was told that one gigabyte is the maximum any customer is allowed with in their tariff but for a additional £10 a month I can get a extra gigabyte or two gigabytes for a additional £15 per month. Compare this with T-Mobile or 3 who offer "All You Can Eat" data witch is included in their respective tariffs. (Which start from half of what I am paying per month for my iPhone 4s.) In my opinion this is very poor! You would think that a customer who spends extra per month on their contract would get extra from the network. Sadly this isn't the case with Vodafone.

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

3 are making a big splash of the uncapped data packages but as a result they are heavily loss making and the network is meant to be quite patchy outside of major cities.

I think that 1gb should be enough for the mobile device itself especially if you are supplementing that with Wi Fi for updates and app downloads.

When you are using the phone as a modem and surfing on a computer a lot more data is used as you will be viewing full websites rather than the cut down mobile versions. 1gb is likely to be used up quite quickly.

What you need for that is a 3G dongle

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi Jeff, Thank you for your reply. I agree that in most circumstances that one gigabyte of data should be sufficient enough for most peoples needs but not for every bodies. The three month Data Test Drive annoyed me because you get use to using as much data as you want to. So when it's gone you miss it. I was told by a in store Vodafone Sales Consultant that one of the main reasons for Vodafone introducing the Data Test Drive is for Vodafone to ascertain how much data a customer uses and for Vodafone to then @ the end of the three months to offer the customer the right amount of data to suit their needs. So in my case one gigabyte of data isn't by no where near suffient enough for my needs. G

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

And you have been offered the option to purchace more,

In an ideal world unlimited data would be available at little cost to anyone, but in the world we live in the network infrastructure needs paying for, and it's far fairer that those who consume the most data pay more for it

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

That would be annoying I agree. I'm always amazed  by how little data I use given the number of emails and other push notifications I have running in the background.

Is the dongle idea any use to you?

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi SynthFG, I understand that data costs money but even if I opted to pay a extra £15 per month for two gigabytes of extra data it still wouldn't be suffient enough for my needs. I'm sure that if Vodafone introduced a "All You Can Eat" data bundle for certain tariffs. That would in turn attract more customers to the network. G

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi Jeff, The dongle would be a good idea if the data allowance limit for the dongle was greater then two gigabytes. Also if I opted for the dongle that would mean extra costs of near on £20 per month. If I was on a lower tariff I could understand having a one gigabyte limit and wouldn't have a complaint but if you are paying near to £80 per month for your iPhone 4s alone then in my opinion you should get more data then one gigabyte. Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

As SynthFG has rightly pointed out, data has to be paid for. Networks make almost nothing from the phones themselves and their model is based on revenue per user, i.e. getting users to make more calls, send more texts/MMS's and use more data. They aren't in a position to give that away as that is where the profit is.

In the USA the CEO of AT&T has claimed to be losing sleep over Apple's iMessage service as that will stop people from sending texts, although they might use a little more data I suppose.

Real world economics dictates that we cannot have low call costs and all we can eat data, and have a company that invests in infrastructure to give us a robust network and newer technologies like 4G.

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Sounds like you have little option but to look at other suppliers of data. Either a dongle or mifi device.

You'd need to check coverage to ensure you can actually use the data you purchase, effectively.

Neither of the suppliers you mention seem to offer unlimited mobile data but they do offer more data than VF.

If VF said unlimited data for everyone then we would all rejoice. If it turned out to be unlimited data with a reduction in quality of service then we might have pause for thought.

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi Jeff, In these times of austerity do you think that the average potential customer is primarily concerned about when choosing a network the state of "infustructure development?" (I don't mean that to sound nasty.) In my opinion the average customer want's to get as much as they can for their hard earned money. That is why the five major networks in the United Kingdom are fighting each other for custom. Thank you for informing me about the CEO of AT&T losing sleep over iMessage. I had no idea it is causing such a problem in the States. G

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Of course they aren't  - we all want as much as we can for as little possible in relation to mobile phones or anything else. But if you step back and think about the economic realities of life have to be taken into account.

If 3Gby a month isn't enough for you then I'd look at an alternitive solution such as getting your fiancee broardband or obtaining a 3G dongle

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi dicarmi, Unfortunately purchasing a MIFI device from another provider is the only option opened to me @ present. I'm interested in what you said about T-Mobile and 3 not offering "All You Can Eat" data in the respective tariffs. Is there a "Fair Usage" stipulation in the small print of the contract? If you could shed some light on this matter it would be most appreciated. Thank You! G

Re: Is One Gigabyte Ever Enough?

Hi SynthFG, That is something that me and my Fiancée are looking into in the near future. I have broadband @ my flat so no worries there. I am mainly concerned about my Fiancee's needs as it would be benefital to her job. Thank you for your input. G
