Hi,
I upgraded to a discounted SIM-only 12 month contract a few days ago however I was just wondering whether this is a mistake. I want to get the S3 or the One X in a few months time and was just wondering whether I will be allowed to upgrade early from the sim-only deal to a pay monthly say 4-5 months into my sim-only contract? Is this possible?
Thank you.

Hello JogaBonito
If you changed your tariff to a 12 month SIM only deal, you would be unable to upgrade to a new phone. The best option would be to cancel the tariff change within the 7 working day exchange and take out a 30 day or 90 day SIM only contract. This will leave you free to upgrade to the new HTC in four to five months time.
Alternatively, as your upgrade price is based on the previous three months payments, let your previous contract roll over, you will then be in a good position to negotiate a new contract.

What do you mean by the bit in bold?

Your upgrade price is based on the previous three months payments, the more you have paid during the time goes towards the price of your upgrade, plus if you are out of contract, you will be in a better bargaining position.
Having said that, I doubt whether it would make too much difference to the price if you were to change from SIM only to full contract and you would be saving quite a bit of money over the next few months with the tariff change.

So basically the more expensive your contract is, the better your contract will be when you upgrade?

Hi JogaBonito
A certain element of what AnnS describes about your upgrade is true in terms of how your upgrade deal is calculated, however there are a number of other factors taken into consideration when providing you with an upgrade offer.
In regards to upgrading part way through your agreement, we would require an early termination fee (ETF) which is the line rental cost to the end of your agreement excluding VAT, which once paid receives a further 2% rebate. Alternatively you can upgrade in the final 50 days of your agreement.
If you'd like to discuss the options further we have a fantastic Web Acquisitions team who'll be able to run through all of these for you. When you're ready to consider you're upgrade let us know and we'll be in touch.
Thanks
Simon
