Went over my 300 minutes by 240 minutes - costing £105!

I realised to my shock today that of my 300 min/month allowence, I've gone over by around 240 minutes (4 hours over the 5, totalling to 9). I wasn't notified at all in any form of communication, now I'm having to pay somewhere in the regoin of £105 or so. Have I got any ground to stand on in not getting a notification and get some form of compensation/reduction in the bill; or have I just got to bite the bullet and take it as a "life lesson"? Many thanks, Josh.

sounds about right at 35p per minute. plus some of the calls will have been less than 60 seconds, and these are still charged a full minute.

So do have have nothing to go on the fact I got no alert that I was nearing the limit of my contract?

If you had checked your online account, you would have noticed that you had reached the limit on your account. You would also had the free 44555 text which would have given you an account balance with the unbilled usage and extra charges.
You should have been fully aware how much you had used the phone and it is your responsibility to manage your account. You have used the minutes and now you will have to pay the charges.
If you are going to be going over your allowance on a regular basis, it may be worth asking Vodafone to add more allowance, it would be a lot cheaper than paying 35p per minute.

So they don't offer any form of alert telling you you're over (or about to go over) your monthly limit? And no, I do not intend this to occur on a regular basis!

No.
As AnnS mentioned you can call 44555 and choose option 1. This will give you the most uptodate values available at the time you call.

Not generally
You should have been well aware that what you were using would be over the 300min limit you had and in your case it's not like you were a little over
You are expected to be grown up enough to manage such things and take action before it becomes an issue (either start making less calls, add more mins to your bundle)
THere are tools such as the my acount section of the web or the cs number that will help you do this, but at the end of the day it is for each individual to decide for themselves

This has happened to, except my bill is now around £140 including line rental. I'm disgusted that Vodafone think it's ok to charge this excessive amount!! I understand completely that it is my fault that i have gone over, but you'd think there'd be some form of notification. Its easy enough to argue that there are ways to find out, but I have never gone over! 900 minutes is a lot, and didn't think i'd manage to go over!! Seeing as though I have not been billed yet, I decided to ring up customer services, who were of no help and just kept putting me on hold, to see if i could add an extra package to add more minutes for this month, was told it'd cost me just £1.20!!!!! However, adding this wont rid me of my current charge or even any of it, EVEN THOUGH i have not been billed for it yet, it is just an estimated cost, and surely i'm paying for the months worth?
Anyway regardless of this, i'm disgusted that they are allowed to charge so much anyway!! And intend to take my custom elsewhere, where theyre customer service is much much better !!! My question is, how can I cancel my contract? I'm only 3 months away from it terminating. I hope they realise they're losing many customers for the sake of money thats 9 times less than the value of their line rental throughout the contract.

Hello gh123
You must have been aware of how long you had spent on your phone. It is the customers responsibity to manage their own account and kept check on usage and not for Vodafone to notify the customer when the allowance has gone over.
You are correct, your usage could have been quickly and easily managed through your online account or from the 44555 text which would have given you an accurate breakdown of your unbilled costs.
I doubt that Vodafone would be able to do anything to help, you may get a goodwill gesture, but Vodafone are under no obligation to offer this.
You have exceeded your monthly allowance by your own doing, and are now liable for the charges.

gh123,
If you want to terminate your account, simply call 191 and ask for a PAC code. They may try to dissuade you, I leave it up to you whether you hear them out or insist on your PAC code NOW - which you are entitled to do. You will have to agree to pay off your remaining line rental, less VAT ( subtract 16.67% ) and less a 2% discount before they will issue a PAC code - this is referred to as an Early Termination Fee. Once your new supplier uses the PAC code your account will automatically be terminated and a final bill generated.
As well as managing you usage it is also your responsibility ( and no-one else's ) to be aware of the charge per minute for making calls once you have used up your "free" minutes - there is really no excuse for being surprised by how much it costs ![]()

Perhaps you would like to explain exactly the reason you consider it disgusting. This is precisely the reason contracts are not offered to the under 18s, you have to be mature enough to manage your own account and keep within the allowance.
This would be be same for any network if you go over the allowance. You have been to the restaurant and eaten the food and now have to pay the bill.

Unfortunately Ann, you are not helping anybody. People are entitled to their opinions, and quite frankly a lot of people agree with mine, just do a quick google search. I have never said that it wasn't my fault that I went over.

In that case, you should be complaining about having to pay the bill. By your own admission, you have exceeded your monthly allowance.
It is not Vodafone's responsibility to baby sit their customers.

And my question was how to cancel it. You never once offered suggestions on how to do this.

You can give 30 days written notice either via email or in letter format. Both of which can be found under the contact us section at the bottom of this page.
Also the PAC option as mentioned above, but this only cancels your account if you use it within 30 days.
As for the per minute cost, Vodafone charge less than O2 Orange and T-Mobile per minute outside of your allowance, so had you been with any of those networks, your bill would have been even higher.
