how to upgrade early?

Posted from Facebook
my phone has broken and i went into the Reading shop today to see about it! They told me the phone would be sent away and in 7 days would be told that it was broken!! I then asked if i could upgrade my phone as i was due an upgrade in a few months anyway. The bloke said 'no' as i wasnt due an upgrade until August! So not only was i told that you were going to waste my time sending my phone away just to be told it was broke! I am also told that i couldnt do anything until August to get a new phone! Now I am a long standing customer and there are 3 of us in our house with vodafone, now you are telling me that you dont want my custom by not allowing me to upgrade early to keep me with vodafone for at least another 18 months! Surely there is something you can do to keep you customers happy! This is a dreadful service to existing customers! I need a new phone and want to stay with vodafone, but obviously am not willing to pay £400 cash for a new phone. An answer to this would be great as last time i posted a question on here this week, i was completely ignorned.

Re: how to upgrade early?

Right, from the sounds of it, you have broken your phone and this is entirely your fault,

You also apparently do not have insurance, again your fault,

btw have you tried your home contents provider, also some premium and student bank accounts offer mobile insurance as part of the package.

Anyway assuming those are no go's and your phone can't be repaired at reasonable cost your pretty out of luck

Your airtime contract and the handset are two separate issues, you have no recourse to get out of your contract early due to damaging the handset and voda don't offer options to downgrade your tariff.

You have also hit at a bad time, until a few weeks ago voda used to offer the option to upgrade 6 months early (at a significant premium) however the uncompetivness of these deals confused customers and they were withdrawn

The mods also used to be able to offer earlier upgrades (upto one year)  but I'm told there ability to do this was also withdrawn at the same time

I susspect a new offering will be rolled out shortly but for now your options (assuming no insurance)

1)  Pay for your phone to be fixed

2) Buy a PAYG or Sim Free handset and use your contract sim in that, you can get some useable simple smartphones for between £50 and £100, and better ones if your willing to go 2nd hand.

3) Pay off your remaining contract (num months remaining * monthly fee not inc VAT ) with a 2% rebate

4) Continue to pay your contract until you can cancel/upgrade

Re: how to upgrade early?

He's just telling you what your options are...you said phone is broken so the assumption is its been physically damaged, and your visit to the store would back that up.

If you accidentaly broke a laptop/TV/car you were still paying for, would you expect the shop just to give you a new one?

all i was saying was that vodafone are very unhelpful, considering the time and money that i have spent with them. the bloke in the shop certainly needs some customer relations training!! All i want to know is why cant i upgrade early especially when i am committing to being a vodafone customer for another 18 months. Oh well, vodafone are obviously not bothered and so intend to take my custom elsewhere along with the rest of the family! I wasnt expecting the shop to give me a new phone, i was just saying that vodafone customer service in the shop is crap and that i wanted to continue my custom with them, but obviously they dont want to keep customers. and the reason why i said 'rude' was because of his attitude!! Rude!

Re: how to upgrade early?

Hi JoGrovesHartwellPike,

I’m sorry that you have found yourself in an awkward situation and that the store staff haven’t been very helpful in getting a resolution for you.

Unfortunately the earliest that you can upgrade is now 50 days before the end of your agreement and as such we wouldn’t be able to process an early upgrade until this point.

The best option would be to look at purchasing a cheap handset to keep you going for the next couple of months until you are able to upgrade where we would be able to look at a new deal for you.

Unfortunately we are very restricted to what we can do in these situations.

James

vodafone have always been rubbish for keeping customers happy and now you have hit an all time low. well consider this household of 3 non vodafone customers. how do you cancel this contract as i will be going elsewhere as obviously vodafone have no intention on keeping customers happy. bye bye vodafone...probably the worst mobile company in the country!

Re: how to upgrade early?

For each acount phone 191 and ask for the PAC

Once you have it you need to use it within 30 days

When you sign upto a new provider give them your code, your voda number will port to the new providers sim within a few days (no need to notify freinds and family of new number)

Voda will then close your acount and issue a final bill which will include the early ermination fee (no months remaining * monthly fee less 2%)

Re: how to upgrade early?

Considering SynthFG is a CE I would have expected them to have put the point across in a better way and I agree was rude. Perhaps some lessons in customer service needed here too!

The OP said the phone was broken, didn't say how, my wife's phone developed a software fault and in effect broke it wasn't her fault but Vodafone were initially adopting a similar attittude as she didn't have their insurance (although covered on house insurance for usual risks software fault is not one of them).

Re: how to upgrade early?

Dave

I don't get paid by voda and am free to put my point across anyway I please,

A software fault is a warenty repair, usually just a reflash,

from the way the OP worded it she has either dropped or submerged her phone, or damaged it in some way that it cannot be repaired,

Now in this case she is stuck for options, especilly as she dod ot just after voda pulled all of the early upgrade options, there's not much point in suggar coating it and most of the blame for her predicament lies with herself

i didnt drop or submerge my phone at all. I was charging the phone and the bit thats inside the phone to charge it came out with the charger end. not my fault, just crappy phone i expect. not even had it for a year. Although saying that should have realised there was something wrong with the phone and the thing just beeped when you charged it, which i now realise that it was because the charger bit on the side of the phone was faulty which i hadnt realised!

Re: how to upgrade early?

Now that's a different story,

A fault like that may be covered under the manufacturers warenty, especially if it were a common fault / manufacturing defect,

the only way it wouldn't be is if the damage occured becasue the phone was dropped at some point or if the phone was older than 2 years

mind posting the phone model,

A warenty repair should be carried out for free

its a sony ericson vivaz. The phone hasnt been dropped and its the plug bit where you charge the thing that has come out from inside the phone! The man in vodafone shop just said that it was broke and there was nothing he could do about it! He was very rude and arrogant to be honest! There is no way this problem with the phone could be down to being dropped anyway as its the plug that has come out!

Re: how to upgrade early?

Hi JoGrovesHartwellPike85,

With the information you've provided brought to light, I'd be happy to look to see if the fault is user caused or covered by the Sony Ericsson manufacturer’s warranty. Reply to the PM I've sent you so that we can collect your details securely and a member of my team will get in touch.

You can find your PM inbox here. :smileyhappy:

Cheers, Ben
