"Pro Rata" bill confusion

Hi guys,
I'm a little confused about my bill, it's the first since an upgrade to both my phone and contract (moving from 30 to 35 per month). I have been charged a little over £51 before VAT citing "inc prorating" as the reason (giving a total of £61. I had assumed my bill would be around £40 this month, seeing that last months bill was £5 cheaper than the plan I upgraded to, thus requiring that £5 be added on.
Have I missed something here or has something gone wonko with the system?

When you upgrade your account will be reset and you will be charged pro rata for the first month and will be charged one months line rental in advance. You should also receive a credit on your bill for your previous contract.
The following link will help explain :
Why is my first bill higher than expected ?
Your monthly roll over allowance and billing date will remain unchanged. If you have any enquiries about your bill Customer Services will be able to help.
