Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

Hey, Why don't we just look to install a custom rom? What is peoples experience with this?  I see there is a few ICS roms.  From what I have read

Resurrection Remix ics v1.0 is the best?  And it is pure google, no vodafone rubbish!!!  Anyone tried this?  Cheers.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

The problem with custom roms is that you invalidate any warranty on your phone. That  and there is a small chance that through the root/rom process you can brick you phone.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

Hi just thought i put my views on this in. From wot i have seen unbranded phones were meant to get ICS first before branded phones yet i got mine via CPW and am still waiting for the update :smileysad: thought would come through on 19th when Samsung officially released it?.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

It said from the 19th. It never said you would get it on the 19th.

I dont get what all the fuss is about. Its a free update. You was happy with the phone before the 19th? Yes? Now all of a sudden the 19th has passed people are on here crying like a baby because they have not got the upgrade yet. Seriously?

And the people saying "Well you never get this with Apple" so then get an iPhone. I doubt very much Samsung will go into bankruptcy because you never got one of their phones. The update will be released when its released. And no matter of crying on here about it will rush it.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

Hmmm well that's a pretty stupid argument...to say 'well then get an iphone'. If people have the GS2 then they probably don't want an iphone. It's the equivalent of me saying 'if you don't like the government, go and live in another country'. Well no I'd rather stay in the country and try and change things here...

And by your logic if people are happy before the 19th...then they should still be happy even if the ICS update NEVER comes surely if that's how you're measuring it.

You're also wrong in saying 'crying' on here won't change anything. People complain about things in order to change the way a company does them. Do you see now? Vodafone has reversed/changed policies in the past as a result of campaigns on this forum and elsewhere. So you're wrong. More to the point, in a general sense people have a right to complain about the lack of info from Vodafone, it's always been a problem.

Without people 'crying' on here and elsewhere about various issues, you'd be be with worse network, so don't forget that. :smileysurprised:

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

@Markb03 Im going to hazard a guess you dont understand about fragmentation or phone security. Firmware updates are important not just because they add new features and improved performance but plug any holes that may exist within the firmware.

When an update is released the developer states that they have fixed a way for people to get into your private information like 'fixed an issue where the kernal was open to attack from certain malware. Btw most people wont get this update for 5 months. Have fun!'

Running outdated firmware can also damage your phone in some circumstances, for example if the new firmware improves battery life then running the old firmware causes you to charge the battery more which then causes a quicker degradation. Or if the processor is overly taxed for no good reason it increases heat and reduces the life of the phone. These are just a couple of examples as to why having the most up to date software is very important.

Re: will I get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

OMG how did windows vista get in to this
Now Android is open source basically FREE
windows is not  so Major updates you need to pay for
But they do do updates to fix problems
Android is the same these are shown on the end of the Number eg 4.0.3 the .3 shows that they have done three update fixes,
Now at the moment Vodafone customers ar on 2.3.5 and XEU are on 2.3.4  now 2.3.4 is the last rom Samsung have done 2.3.5 has been done by Vodafone the basics are 2.3.4 but they have messed with it and then sent it OTA other networks have also done 2.3.5 with the S2 Samsung are trying to keep the odd number for networks and even numbers for Stock XEU Phones now that was the plan with Gingerbread now this only applys to updates and fixes
When a Major rom is Launched such as ICS they do beta testing on stock roms and keep updating and fixing it before its launched now this is Android not Samsung that do this hence the 4.0.3 its the third version
This is what we all start on
Now if there are any security problems or general problems Samsung will get to work and roll out a fix to there XEU customers
Now its up to Vodafone weather they roll them out or not
Now if you got your phone from Carphone warehouse you have the same rom as XEU users now you normally get yours two weeks after but all you need to do is to change your CSC code from CRT to XEU and that's it
If you pay for a phone full price Carphone warehouse are supposed to change the CSC for you
Now I spoke to my contact at Samsung and even he said the ICS roll out is going very slow, Now the S2 version we have in Europe is different to the ones in other country's outside of Europe
Now The European side is split in to two northern and southern
Now on
http://www.samfirmware.com/
You will see the "3" network have got there's out first now if the Kies logo is grayed out it means that it not available via kies this could be a leaked rom
Now the last one is Russia so it looks like there starting there and working there way down
On the Galaxy s there was a pattern so we new who got what first but I have to admit this is a mess
But the "3" customers are not jumping for joy as they have taken of the ICS Boot video at the start and replaced it with there own and its heavily bloated so avoid that rom !!!! People on three de brand faster then Vodafone users do
Now my experiance with samsung is they normaly go at the start of a mounth
Hang in there it is coming when the XEU boys get it then you can start the nagging at Vodafone lets hope Orange don't beat them as there allways Last
So the Race is on for secound place on who gets ICS !!!!

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

I had Cyanogen mod on my old milestone (hunk of junk, never buying Motorola again), and it was great. It ran far better than the Motorola stock image which was out of date, buggy and locked down like a nuns undergarments.

But as far as the S2 goes, I'm going to stick with Vodafone's ROM. There's nothing wrong with it, apart from those annoying vodafone apps but I can live with that. It'll likely be along in a few weeks at most.

I believe that if you do root/flash a rom that it voids your waranty - although I don't recall signing anything saying that in the terms and conditions of my contract. I wish someone could clarify that point.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

@Wintee it does invalidate the warranty unfortunately, it counts as changing it from manufacturers specs. Due to the risks involved (i.e. bricking) they wont cover any repairs when the custom rom counter on the phone is anything other than 0. It is in your contract, i cant remember where but its under the modifying/adapting from stock.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

Hi All,

Whilst we wait for the Vodafone update (yawn), it seems there has been a "preparatory update" to "optimize the phone for ICS"

http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/google/android/vodafone-u-k-issues-preparatory-update-that-op...

http://www.eurodroid.com/2012/03/20/vodafone-issues-preparatory-galaxy-s-ii-android-4-0-update-full-...

http://www.ukmobilereview.com/platforms/android/vodafone-galaxy-ii-android-40-testing/

Has anyone had this?  Apparently it was released yesterday...

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

Preparatory update? No, not had this yet. Honestly, Google and samsung need to look at themselves VERY closely if it has taken vodafone and all their expertise to notice that neither ICS or the GS2 were ready for this update. Reports just in, owners of GS2 on the 3 network are running scared as their phones are exploding for no apparent reason.

Cmon voda, stop messing about with your nonsense. Open source is for us, not you.

Re: will i get ICS for my Galaxy SII this week/month?

I don't know about a preparatory update but I have noticed my Bluetooth now makes an alert noise when I turn it on from the notification bar, and I didn't see any system updates being pushed to the phone...
