Hah! You've never worked in software development have you? ![]()
No seriously. If all goes well, it will be some time tomorrow.
If all goes well.
If a last minute problem comes up it will get delayed. Better a few grumbling forum users than bricking every Vodafone branded SII out there.

SimonWilding:
1 - I intend to upgrade OTA, and I assume this will work via wifi? Or will it only work from the mobile internet? If the latter, how big will the upgrade be and will it count towards my allowance?
You can download via Wifi and I'd recommend you do. Without knowing the exact size of the file, it'll likely be moderately large in the context of mobile phone downloads.
2 - how long wil the download take? (I know it depends on line speed etc but are we talking a couple of hours, a whole day?)
Depends on your connection, you're not talking a couple of hours though. Less than an hour is a definite, potentially a couple of minutes depending on your speed.
3 - can I still use my phone while the upgrade is downloading?
No. Your phone will effectively close itself, probably reboot a few times and go through the download and install steps itself.
4 - If I am downlaoding from WiFi and leave the house and don't want to continue downloading via 3G, will my half upgraded phone still work?
In theory this shouldn't cause a problem. It simply won't be an upgraded at all phone, just some information will have been downloaded but nothing upgraded or changed. In reality I'd recommend against this. Just wait till you've got a spare half hour or so, sitting in the house having dinner, start the download and let it do its thing.

It's best taking the advice already given and you should really only upgrade when you know you will be near a reliable wi-fi broadband connection (either public or private, it doesn't matter) and know you have ample time if anything were to go wrong, so that you have time to rectify the problem ie. not leaving it overnight and picking it up before leaving for work in the morning expecting a flawless download and update. Sometimes this can happen flawlessly but it's better to know for sure.

Hi
Is there a way of knowing how I will get the update - Kies does not seem to have an option to check for OS udpates - it does check for Firmware updates - is that what I am looking for? Or will some indication be pushed to my phone saying it is available for download?
Apologies for dumb questions.

Hi
You should get a message when the update is available, just check you have the two boxes below marked.
Settings - About Phone - Software Update - Auto Update (Check for updates automatically) & Push Message (Receive software update information via message)
I'm sure these are set as default but just worth checking

To make the process as pain free as possible please just follow the simple steps below, once the update is available.
1. BACKUP everything
2. BACKUP again
3. BACKUP again just to make sure
4. Make sure your phone is fully charged
4. Factory Re-set, into dialer and type *2767*3855# (this will wipe EVERYTHING that you have purchased or downloaded onto the phone and format the SD card)
5. Your phone will now be back to how it was when you received it in that little box from Vodafone
7. During setup of the phone register with a Google Account if you want to do the update OTA
8. Make sure your phone is fully charged.
9. For OTA update you will either get a notification or you can look for it in Applications, then Settings, then scroll down to About Phone, then Software Update, OR
7. Connect to Kies
8. Update the phone to ICS
9. Factory Re-set, into dialer and type *2767*3855#
All being well you phone should now be on ICS and you should have no problems.
10. You can now restore your phone from your backup.
Sometimes the simple answer is overlooked because it's technology that's complicated!

If you cna't get KIES on the mac, then set the phone to work in USB mode (Debugging) and just copy all the files and folders over. That will do the same thing.

Hi
You shouldn't need to connect to Kies to do a backup, I set my USB Utilities to mount the phone as a mass storage device, you should then be able to copy the whole drive and just copy back once the update is done.
This is how I do it with a Windows PC, I am not very ofay with the Mac but imagine it should work the same.
Hope this helps
Steve
