@ swarren - that's one way but that doesn't give me the backup of everything else such as mail/messages/call logs etc...

@ skintrade

This method will ensure all data in apps are restored when you download them again.

I use SMS Backup and Restore to backup save SMS messages, Email messages should download again if you are using an IMAP account, I don't know of a way of saving the Email settings though, but, they're pretty easy to set up again.  Gmail won't be affected beacuase as soon as you log in it will download them all again.

There is an app that also backs up Call logs to your Gmail account, I think its called APN Backup, I have never used this but have seen other people on the forum using it.

Hope this helps

Steve

sailsy66,

Android updates are always carried out using a staggered schedule to avoid overloading the servers.

Your update will appear in time.

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

And Samsungs servers are not the best but thats only via kies

One last thing to mention

You might get the update offered on OTA (Over the Air )

But not on Kies

as above it is staggered

If you prefer one then the other you might have to wait as well for the update to be offered the way you want

@swarren, APN Backup and Restore doesn't backup call logs, it backs up access point names and settings. This is not normally needed as the settings are usually included already or if you are on a "piggy back" network like giffgaff on o2 these are usually supplied by them, printed on the welcome card or sent as a text message.

Call Logs Backup and Restore is the program you need to back up your call logs. However, it does not back anything up to Gmail, it uses the SD card. If you want to use Gmail as the backup location, there is another program available on Google Play called SMS Backup +.

All I've used in the past is:
SMS Backup and Restore
Call Logs Backup and Restore and
exported my entire address book to a file on the SD card,
copied all of my user files like photos, videos and documents to the external SD card and
removed the SD card from my phone whilst updating

Works every time:-)

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

I have never updated via Kies before, I'm thinking of leaving it 24 hours to see how other people advise the best way to update and to make sure there are no major bugs with ICS

There are users on this forum with much more experience and technical knowledge than I have (Soup Dragon and Northern DJ to name a couple), I intend to use this resource to make sure I get the easiest transistion to ICS as their advice is always spot on.

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

@swarren, my advice was not of the best way to update to ICS. I was just describing a safe and easy way to backup your data for any reason, including disasters like having your phone run over by a bus. This isn't just useful for pre-update preparations.

One more thing would be to install all your programs from scratch and by this I mean having absolutely nothing on your SD card apart from your pictures, videos and documents. If you installed anything to SD or there are any application folders there then once you are sure you have everything backed up, just delete everything apart from your backups and personal files. This way there will be no orphaned or rogue files clogging up your SD card should you not install something you had before or should the software change the place and way in which it stores files.

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

@Rapturoso

Sorry, I posted that before I saw your reply, my post was just a general comment to people who keep asking when the update is coming. If past updates from Vodafone are anything to go by 24 hours testing by forum members will give us a much better idea of the whether to use Kies or OTA to update and any glitches in the software.

I should haven't mentioned APN backup as I never back up my call logs (personal preference and have never really seen the point) I should have just pointed them at the market, apologies for the misinformation.

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

Just in case people haven't seen the offical Vodafone update regarding the update:

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately Samsung have told us this morning that they are unable to make the update available to you as planned.

The new plan from Samsung is that the update will be available via KIES tomorrow, 13th April, and via Over The Air update on Tuesday 17th April. If this moves at all, we’ll of course let you know.

I know a lot of you, like us, will be disappointed at this last minute change of plan and we continue to challenge Samsung to make this available to you as quickly as possible.

Morning Tom

By added an update, you mean the update has been moved.

I don't understand how originally the Kies and OTA update were both going to be today, but now Kies is going to be 4 days earlier ?

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

Yep - I'm disappointed (though not surprised, as I half expected as much).

I'm at home tomorrow, and not able to use KIES at home (as running Windows 8 Consumer, which doesn't work with KIES), so I'll eitjer have to find a PC that does support it, or wait until next week.

Montana, are you really upset?

I mean do you really want to run the risk of installing an update on Friday the 13th? :smileyhappy:

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

I don't know no one seems to be able to answer this whether CPW in the firmware means Carphone Warehouse most Voda have 2.3.5 so I guess we won't get the update.

Just be good to know why even though I pay for a vodafone contracted phone is has CPW???

Tom anyone answer our question?

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

I'm not THAT upset...lol.

As for the guys who got their phones form CPW etc, and are unbranded, but using a VF SIM.  Not sure, but I would think that you won't be getting the update tomorrow, as the KIES firmware check won't see it as VOD (Vodafone).  Samsung said that they are releasing the SIM Free / Unbranded ICS update after the networks have gotten it (thereby using them as "guinea pigs").

I think you could be waiting a little longer, unfortunately.  Sorry :smileysad:

Re: Any sign over the Air or Kies ICS?

So the update is delayed again, apparently due to a lack of approval from Samsung... what a surprise.

Vodafone, here's a small tip for the future; Before you announce to the world that you will be releasing a software update on "x" date, please ensure that the manufacturer has actually APPROVED the release. Also, please try to make sure that you're at least factually correct when detailing how an update is to be delivered (the original accouncement claimed that the update would be available via OTA and Kies at the same time).

Sort yourself out Vodafone, it really isn't rocket science...

As much as I don't want to defend "Big Red" the post from Tom listed today as a provisional date
