Hi Guys
When the update was due last week the mods stated that wth the Gingerbread update it went out at around 12:00pm
They will also release it in stages so not everyone tries to download it at once.
Don't forget to read this forum for the update procedure ensuring to backup before you perform a hard reset before and after the update, these instructions really do help the update procedure run smoothly.
Enjoy ICS ![]()

It is now available for me!
243MB in size so I think I'll wait until I get home and use my wifi!
Good luck people!
Maybe we can use this thread for problems/tips etc.....

@SimonWilding
I would certainly suggest using WiFi for the update, you don't want to risk losing signal during the update as this may "brick" your phone.
I would also suggest any problems should be started under new threads with appropiate titles to make them more trackable for other users, this thread could get very long very quickly if used for problems.

How did you get it, by going to the menu option I put in my first post?
Thanks

@craigthornton
Thats were you need to check for updates, but as long as the "Auto Update" and "Push Message" boxes are ticked you will get a message as soon as it is available.

I've had an OTA update available for months that won't install.
It downloads, reboots my phone and looks like it's installing only to tell me it didn't work and to do the upgrade over Kies on the PC... which itself tells me that my firmware can't be upgraded via Kies for PC.
Hoping that ICS will clear out the pipes, so to speak and actually allow me to do an upgrade.

I got a push message as that option and the auto check for upddate box was ticked in the settings option, but it took me to that screen so you can probably do a manual check.

Steve, would you mind reminding me of the step by step instructions for OTA update. Is the hard reset necessary and does it erase the 'contacts' and apps on the phone? If necssary how is this performed. Thanks in advance...

Same thing here. Started the download, got to about 25% and "connection failed". No longer available if I do a manual check. Could a moderator please explain what's happening?

@katatutu
Firstly I would keep an eye on this thread as it appears at the moment the servers are overloaded and updates are failing to download and are then not available again, it would be safest to wait a while until the servers are less busy and there are reports of sucessful updates being posted.
But then you can:-
1) Backup everything that you want to keep as the Factory Reset will wipe EVERYTHING (Internal SD, Apps, Contacts etc)
2) Make sure your phone is fully charged
3) Factory Re-set, Go into dialer and type *2767*3855# (this will wipe EVERYTHING that you have purchased or downloaded onto the phone and format the Internal SD card)
4) Your phone will now be back to how it was when you received it
5) Register with your Google Account to do the update OTA
7) You will either get a notification or you can look for it in Applications, then Settings, then scroll down to About Phone, then Software Update.
8) Update the phone to ICS.
9) Factory Re-set, Go into dialer and type *2767*3855#
I was able to perform my update via KIES so I am not sure how quickly the upgrade notification will come but I'm fairly certain if it was available before you performed the Reset you should be able to manually chek for it.
The Hard reset with delete EVERYTHING (Except any External SD Card) so ensure anything you want to keep is backed up, if you sign in with a Google account your contacts will download automatically, this is necesaary to do before and after update though as it deletes any trace of Gingerbread from the phone.
If you have any questions regarding how and what to use to Backup please let me know.

Thanks for that Steve, very helpful.
One Q. I was going to take the external SD card out to save it being wiped when I do the reset/update, but going by your post I won't need to as the external SD card won't be wiped by the factory reset, is that right?

Is the "hard reset" really necessary? It seems like a lot of hassle and surely Vodafone (and more to the point Samsung (and MORE to the point, Google)) know how to make a software update that updates properly and also deals with cleaning up?
Out of interest, what differences have been found between an newly upgraded Galaxy S2 that has been hard reset before/after, and one that was not?
Thanks

Hi Simon
I did my update via Kies but I'm sure that the OTA works the same way and I left my External SD card in my phone with no problems.
What I did do was when I mounted the phone to copy the Internal storage card I copied the external SD card to my PC as well.
