Cannot send emails - BT Internet

Hi, I am hoping someone will be able to help me, I have searched various forums looking for answers but unfortunately nothing seems to solve the email problem on my Galaxy S2.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 will not send emails with or without attachments, I didnt realise the emails I was writing were not getting sent but sitting in my outbox.
I can receive emails ok.
I have deleted my account and reset it, I have looked at the APN as advised and all I keep getting is 'connection error' and I am at a loss as to what to try now.
My email provider is BT Internet - my mail outgoing settings are:-
SMTP server: mail.btinternet.com
Security Type: None
Port: 587
Incoming Server:
User Name : myemail address
Password: my password
POP3 server: mail.btinernet.com
Security Type:None
Port 110
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Carole

Thank you for your quick response, sorry for being so dumb but I dont really understand what you mean.
Will I still be able to use the BT mail account, as I do need to keep using this account and not change to another.
Could you explain to me how I do what you suggested.
Thanks v much
Carole
