Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

Okay, I backed up, and installed the ICS update through Kies today on my S2. It all went successfully, no errors, nothing. Everything got reinstalled.

...Except now, my S2's screen won't lock. Additionally, holding the Power button no longer brings up the power menu (Silent, Data Networks, Flight Mode, Power Off) - it just shuts down completely.

Before you ask, yes, I've tried every Screen Lock option under Security - and nothing. Absolutely nothing. I called Vodafone tech support, who directed me to Samsung - so I called them, and they told me to back up, and do a Factory Reset. I've now done this three (!) times, and the problem is still there. (On the plus side, the call echo is gone. But that's like burning down your house to have somewhere to park your car. Works, but causes other problems).

Anyone else having this problem, or can advise?

Yep - I9100VODLP8. (The Samsung customer service thought something similar - that I'd used a custom ROM. Nah, it's definitely the network ROM.)

Edit: Doing a full-on hard reset (that is, not Settings->Backup+Reset like Samsung advised; Home+Vol Down+Power reset) now. Will report back if this last resort reset works.

Re: Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

An update: Doing a hard reset has killed it. The phone now is frozen in firmware recovery mode and is heating up. A lot. Welp, looks like it's to the nearest Vodafone shop with me. Be warned: the ICS update for the Galaxy S2 has (in this case at least, and being done through the proper, legitimate means with no errors during the process) bricked the handset. Has anyone else had this, or is this just me?

Re: Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

Okay - last post, I promise.

Managed to bring the S2 back from firmware recovery. Complete factory reset - now a total of SEVEN times. The problem still exists. (To refresh: Absolutely no lock screen and thus no way to lock the screen, and power button does not give power options anymore). What are my options from here?

ICS - low call volume on speaker

I've updated my SGS2 to ICS.

When making or receiving a call and using the SPEAKER button to go hands free, the person on the other end can hardly hear me. I can hear them fine.

Without the SPEAKER option is off and I have the handset to my ear they can here me fine.

No problems experienced with my bluetooth headset.

Is there a microphone gain setting somewhere for the various modes? I can't find any settings that adjust the input volume.

Samfirmwares doesn't have the 2.3.5 ROM. (And besides that, I'm on a connection with limited bandwidth. Downloading the 400Mb of the ICS ROM today was...pushing it.) Was worth a try though, thanks.

At the one who's having problems with the other end hardly hearing you: Mine did that too. Solution: Turn off Noise Reduction - during call, Menu key and in that menu it gives you. In some S2s, it causes more problems than it's worth (i.e. mine, and yours, I suspect.)

Re: Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

Would someone mind testing the accuracy of their GPS, please? Mine's showing me being a fair distance away from my actual location with 8+ satellite showing good signals in GPS Test.

Re: ICS - low call volume on speaker

The low call volume has gone away by itself. User error probably!

DJNW - my GPS seems pretty spot on. To the extent it seems to have pinpointed exactly where in my house I am sitting.

Re: Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

"how did you get on ?"

It didn't work - the very same issue showed up. In order to fix it, I had to break the warranty: custom firmware, root, get access to the efs/IMEI folder and change the string of text in the "typestr" file to "ON".

....And the file was not even there. Which it should have been. So I had to add the file myself and its text, save, reboot, and blam, fixed. Works like a charm.

But to fix a problem which seems to have slipped through the testers' hands, I had to break my warranty and pay £3 (Root File Explorer isn't a free app). On the other hand, my warranty was up this July anyway - so as long as nothing happens to the phone in three months, I should be ok.

(Background info: No, my S2 was never on custom firmware or ROMs. It was always on VOD. It did have to be repaired a few months ago, so possibly something the repair centre did screwed it up. Either way, I've lost my warranty to fix it.)

Re: Galaxy S2 and ICS...problems

Hi all..
Hmmm my ICS update on my SGS2 last week, something strange has happened. My phone, fully charged will switch itself off randomly. This has happened 4 times since the update. I had to take out the battery and put it back in to fire up the phone. It still kept the charge?? Anyone seen this?

@theceilingman...
Yep it's just randomly done it again.. I wonder if it's an app? I may need to strip it back for a few days and see if that's the cause.
