hey guys
am still waiting to get the ICS update for my galaxy s2 bought direct from a vodafone branch via OTA but no luck. i cant get the kies software to work on my macbook (am running osx 10.5.8) either.
therefore i wont to also back up my phone beforehand and perform a hard factory reset. is there a way where i can back up my phone (contacts, pictures and all data) without using kies software??
can i go into a vodafone branch and upgrade/back up in store?
any help would be appreciated
cheers.

@StewartPaterson
You won't be able to Backup and Upgrade in store unfortunately.
You can "mount" your phone via USB cable to your PC and copy the Internal Storage Card to your PC and copy it back after upgrade.
The are various apps available to backup messages and call logs and if you use your google account to sign in then your contacts will automatically be updated when you login after the update.
I know Kies has been a bit of a problem with the MAC, some people have had some luck by removeing Kies and the drivers and reinstalling a clean copy of Kies from the Samsung site and connecting the phone after removing the sim card, this doesn't always work but may be worth a go.
If you require any further information please feel free to ask.

thank you for the information
i have tried installing and deleting kies roughly 10-15 times now and it just will not open or work. it wasnt a fact it wasnt finding the phone the actuall program just would not open.
do you reckon a hard factory reset will help my situation or not too bother?
thanks

@StewartPaterson
I don't think a Hard reset would do too much at this point, as you will see there are still a lot of people waiting for the OTA upgrade so I wouldn't panic, this is probably due to a staggered release of it to phones. Tom (Community Manager) did confirm this yesterday but I haven't seen any update from him today, but as you are aware he (and all the mods) are extermely busy at the moment.
Hope this helps

Hi there StewartPaterson,
Thanks for your posts, and to swarren for the fantastic help so far!
I guess you've not seen our Vodafone Red Box video then?
This magic little box can back up your contacts, photos and other files so it's definitely worth popping into your local store ![]()
Cheers,
Lee

If your contacts are synced to Gmail then they should automatically reappear after you've upgraded. Also, when I upgraded to ICS my apps were automatically re-downloaded so I didn't lose anything. All my photos are stored on an external SD card so I removed that before the upgrade just in case something went pear-shaped.

For app settings the idea of copying over the entire contents of the phone to a pc and back again after update helped.
I used MyBackup app to back up contacts, call logs SMS messages and even some settings like Alarm etc.
Except Alarm ( I had 4 alarms set up for different days of the week, only 1 alarm was restored) all the other things worked like a charm, I now still have all the SMS messages and logs of all calls made since I first got my SGS II.

Kies and mac have never been good bed fellos and they have only recenty brought it out
Now before then the only way to upgrade was to use
Heimdall bit tricy but it works
Now Soupdragon did a good Guide on
For windows users but the links to XDA which has there own Guide for Mac users
After you have used this to upgrade you will not bother with kies
I don't no why you have not been offered the OTA yet
Does Kies see the phone in any shape or form ?
Try putting the phone in debugging mode and connecting it to the mac then try kies
