Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

Hi,

I upgraded/changed my firmware to ICS via Samsung Kies yesterday and all went perfectly.

In setting up and checking functionality of the phone, I have discovered that the stock video player no longer supports the .AVI files which it did before the flash.

I have tried locally (rom SD card) and from my media server using Samsung AllShare application.  Both of these worked perfectly on 2.3.5.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Thanks,

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

I think you will find that there is a codec error did you do a Factory reset after

This will reload the codec back on

Yes, I did do a factory reset after upgrading.

No codec error I'm afraid.

Just upgraded my wife's S2 too.

Same issue :smileyfrustrated:

Hi dtjames

Thank you for your posts and a very warm welcome to the eForum.:smileyhappy:

Are you experiencing the same issue on your wife’s device now you have updated this?

Have you downloaded any other apps since the update that may be conflicting?

Please back up all of your contacts and information and perform a second factory reset.

Many Thanks

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

Identical experience on both devices.

Factory reset mine twice just to be sure it wasn't something I was doing.

It seems the ICS update no longer support the .AVI format.  Could someone else try it and verify please?

MP4 plays (and streams using AllShare) perfectly, just like the .AVI files used to.

Thanks.

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

Hi again,

Would someone be kind enough to try an .AVI file on the stock video player please?  Any one.

(A mod can try if they really want to help)

Please let me know if it plays or not.

Much appreciated.

Try MX Player from Play Store. It can play virtually all file types including .avi's

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

It could be something that Samsung have implemented as a form of Media Rights restriction because of the movie downloads in Play Store?

There are lots of different players out there, it may be a case of trying some?

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

I stream my .AVI files over a network using AllShare. This, by default, uses the standard video player on the phone.

I have tried other players which play the filetype, but they all download the file from the server rather than stream.

Fact is that the Galaxy S2 with Vodafone's Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files. It did with Gingerbread.

I'd like to know if this was deliberate or if it will be fixed.

Over to you, Vodafone?

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for all of your input on this thread.

Unfortunately we currently don’t have access to the Samsung Galaxy SII in the office with ICS to test this for you however, I have raised this to our devices team for further investigation.

The OTA update started, then failed. It nows says no update available. Is this a server capacity issue?

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

That'll be all we hear of this from Vodafone then.

Why don't they use one of the handsets they conducted the extensive testing on...to make sure there are no issues!

Gutted.

Re: Ice Cream Sandwich no longer plays .AVI files

yep, seems to depend on the file, rather daft a 2004 windows AVI will not show the image on 3rd party players and not run at all on the stock video player.

i grabbed a torrent avi of a nat geo show i watched and it plays fine.
