Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Hi, I have the same issue with the Galaxy S2, the OTA update fails & when I attempt to update via Kies it says that software updates for this device are not supported. So for now I'm stuck with Android version 2.3.3

pda: I9100BUKG2
PHONE: I9100BUKE1
CSC: I9100VODKE2

KERNEL: 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890
root@DELL102 #2

IMEI: 458490/04/887338/5

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Hi Everyone,

So it's not clear how your handsets ended up on a software version not recognised by KIES, but we know we can resolve this via the postal repair process. This involves you sending your handset away to us, all you need to do when arranging the repair is make it clear to the adviser you speak to that it's to have the software updated to the latest version.

I'm just awaiting confirmation on if anything else is necessary, so hang fire for now, but I thought I'd give you a little update.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for the update; only comment is its a tad frustrating having to send the phone back to Vodafone again! I've only had it since July and its already had to go back once for an update...so, while you're looking into resolutions into this, can you also ask the technical team to check if this will be an ongoing issue with regard to updates in the future. Cheers and keep up the great work. Derek.

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Hi Derek,

There's no reason why this would be an ongoing issue, but obviously I can't say what will happen in the future so there's always a small possibility.

When booking your repairs, please make it clear to the adviser that it needs to be noted that the software needs updating to the latest version due to the incorrect software being on the handset at the moment. If there's any difficulty, bookmark this post in your phone and show it to them, or get them to drop me an email at tom.rushton@vodafone.com :smileyhappy:

[ Edited ]

Firstly thanks for the support Tom, it's nice to have a helpful member of the community paying an interest - keep up the good work!

I really think that sending the phone back for this reason is poor. I have already sent this handset back twice before, the first apparently got 'tested' and sent back with no fault found, I re-sent it back (taking a couple of weeks to do) as it was still faulty where they admitted there was an issue with the screen so replaced that.

Am I going to be re-embursed some credit whilst I am unable to use the phone as it spends more time in transit than my hand?

A quick question regarding this and your response - what firmware version would be put on our phones if we were to return them as described?

It just seems a little odd that the people reporting this issue are not all on the same firmware, leaving the 'return to Vodafone' option looking a bit more like a 'we've got no idea what the problem is, let's just give this a try' option.

Personally I will not be sending my phone off anywhere as apart from the Kies issue it's functioning fine (on version 2.3.5), however I'll be a lot more concerned if this issue prevents my phone upgrading to ICS when that is officially released.  If that were the case I will not only require a guaranteed fix from vodafone, but also a replacement phone to be provided whilst mine is sent away to fix a problem that has seemingly been caused by faulty firmware released by Vodafone.

This is effecting people on 2.3.3 only if your on 2.3.5 then your one of the lucky ones and your phone is fine

and your version of kies should say you have the most uptodate firmware

Its going to take a bit for Vodafone to look into this

the only thing in comom is that there stuck on 2.3.3 and can not update at all

There has been some confussion on getting the right info out eg what firmware is on the phone But Tom has got that now

and all we can say at the moment is they will sort it, they did with the GPS

Still any one stuck on 2.3.3 that can not update please post with your firmware detals and you will be added to the list

Now only if this effects you we don't want this post going off on a tangent

N-DJ - I do have this same issue with my phone not being recongised by Kies despite me being on 2.3.5, and was directed to this thread by Tom from the other thread before he closed it, as were several others I believe.  Tom has emailed me for my IMEI, which I have provided.

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

[ Edited ]

I must admit I'm a bit confused as I'm on Android 2.3.4 but have the same issues as the subject of this thread. My phones details are as follows:

Android version 2.3.4

PDA: I9100XWK13

Phone: I9100XXKI1

CSC: I9100XEUKH2

Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWK13-CL568779root@DELL88#2

My problems started when I successfully installed an OTA pushed to my phone from Vodafone, on connecting to Kies the subject message is displayed. Prior to this I had no problems with Kies or any OTA updates. So as you can see it's not just 2.3.3 that's affected.

Can anyone advise on moving forward and is the only solution to send the phone away? Not the best option for me as I installed the OTA in good faith and it now seems that i'm going to be without my phone.

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

I don't no why as this is for people who can connect to kies but its not allowing them to upgrade

Not connecting to Kies is a different problem

This can be a driver problem, Or not haveing .Net 4 installed on your PC

First thing to try is to put your phone into USB Mass storage mode first and see if it see's the phone

Then put your phone back in to kies mode do not plug in yet

Now open kies up wait till it fully opens now plug your phone in, now if windows see's the phone a drive will open this proves that windows see's the phone

If the drive does not open this needs to be sorted of kies will not see it

To fix this you need to open device manager in control panel

On opening look for yellow "!" now what your looking for is connected MTP in external devices now it might show ok and the name of your phone but the driver might be corupt

To fix right clik and uninstall then click actions and do a scan for changes and it will re install the phone

Now kies should see the phone and if all goes to plan your number will show

I must point out the above is not a fix for the 2,3,3 people on here that can not update, but as a fix for people who can not connect to kies

Tom go stand in the naughty corner !!!!

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Hi Northern -dj,

Just to clarify my phone connects to Kies just fine, however as I said my problem is as the subject heading of this thread "your device does not support updating via kies", this is the message that is displayed when checking firmware, all else connects ok. The reason I said I was confused was that in an earlier post you said this only affects people with 2.3.3 this is incorrect as I have 2.3.4.

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Right if you have 2.3.4 then your phone is XEU or from car phone warehouse

Now I have two SGS 2 Both XEU on my companies contract now I have just contacted them and both are saying that they have the latest firmware on But and here is the BUT !!! It was saying that there was a update for Kies

I have told them no

There is nothing on the Samsung mobile site to say that Kies does not support the Galaxy s2 so it sounds like Kies could be part of the problem

and seems to be the only thing that every one has in common other then the OTA Bit

I would of thought that if Samsung were going to stop using Kies they would of said somthing

somthing need to be sorted on how these phones are upgraded

Hopefully Vodafone will get to the bottom of this

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

It seems like Kies has got problems again my locaol service centre have had alot of problems with updating on other devices since the last update so i have told him that its effecting the s2 as well

so any one with kies and it says there is a update for kies then don't keep your old version

If i'm right on this its a big clanger for samsung and it need people to complain on facebook and by phone but be carful as there tecnical is off shore and there not that good the more people complain then they might do somthing

What options

Well people need to no if they send there phone back it will come back updated from Vodafone

Or wait till kies is sorted

Or Get samsung service centre were most have a pc light a internet cafe and you can update your phone there and then oh they don't use kies and they have staff on hand to help or you can leave it with them.

Or Vodafone can Kick Samsung up the ......... To get this sorted

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

Hi All,

Apologies for the confusion over this. When I closed the other thread, the only reports in there and in this thread were of issues updating from 2.3.3 (except for dnairb001) and so as NDJ says, it looks like people who don't have that issue are affected by something else.

Anyone who has a Vodafone branded handset on 2.3.3 which won't update needs to send their handset away for a software update, making it clear to the person booking the repair that the handset has a software issue with updating and needs to be put onto the latest release.

Anyone who has any other firmware version or a non-Vodafone branded handset, it looks like a separate issue so please start a new thread so we can single these things out. NDJ has already offered some great help around getting KIES to work correctly. Also, it's not necessary to update via KIES, the updates for the S2 are available over the air. I'm just installing 2.3.5 on one of our office handsets at the moment and it's working fine.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Issue with Updating firmware on Galaxy S II

How the heck do I get my phone to update "OTA"?

Also, a guy in my office has just had an ICE over the air update on his nexus. Will we be getting this soon?

Settings > About phone > Software update > Check for update

As for ICS, no news at the moment.
