Are the maps ever updated or is it embedded software in the handset ?

Which navigation are you using 

If its the Blue arrow on your phonel that is Google that looks after that an i think it was 2010 they were last updated, Other companys get there info from the national database which the Ordenace servay look after eg, TomTom, garmin,copilot

Yes it's the blue arrow, I can see it's Google now.  Do the maps update over the air  though or through software upgades etc ?

The Google Maps APP is updated from time to time on your phone.

If you open Google Maps on your PC, it's the same map as you will see on your phone.

When on your PC, make sure to be logged in with your Gmail account now you can Add favourite places to the Map (Yellow Star). These favourites will appear on your phone.

i always update my google map's via the market

The software you update via the market but the maps load up as you go and stay in your cache system so on your return there on your phone, the only down side is this uses data on 3G google are working on a down load version, but i use copilot the voices are heeps better and its spot on

Avoid copilot premium it has problems sending the code out
