Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Hi,

Recently received an upgrade in the form of a Galaxy S2 last week. For the last few days ive noticed that some calls to my phone havent been coming through and when i try to make ones then it doesnt even try to connect before saying "call ended".

I googled possible causes and saw a similar problem and it said to switch from GSM/WCDMA to GSM then back to GSM/WCDMA in Wireless and Network -> Mobile Networks. This seemed to fix the issue momentarily as i could make and receive calls for a short period after  this however it didnt resolve it completely as i have found myself having to do this every few hours.

Ive had the phone for roughly a week and a half now.

has anyone else had this issue or could the mods tell me if something can be done to resolve this.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

This sounds like the phone might have come unlogged from the network

go in to settings > Wirless networks > Mobilenetworks >Network operators this will scan for Networks Make sure you pick Vodafone UK this will log you back on.

When you Logged on to the Gsm Side did the phone work ????

[ Edited ]

1). Does the issue happen in just one location?

No.

2). Does the issue occur if you try your SIM card in a different phone?

No.

3). Can you check your coverage here? Please bear in mind that this is only a guideline and can never be 100% accurate, particularly for indoor coverage.

Shows "Good Indoors"

4). Can you check our Faults Board, which contains all the mast issues we’re aware of.

Nothing applicable.

5). Does this issue happen on 2G/3G or both. To check this, you can amend your phone's network settings, our Help Centre contains all the instructions, just select your model of phone and then select "network".

3G.

6). What is the full postcode of where the issue occurs (if you’re uncomfortable with this appearing on the forum, then please add it to your profile by clicking “My eForum Settings” on the front page and then selecting “Personal Information”

G2 8N*

7). How far you have to travel to get signal

Changing locaiton doesnt help. Only if i move from GSM/WCDMA to GSM and then back to GSM/WCDMA in Network Settings.

8). Do you get any error messages/tones if you’re having problems with calling/texting

Inbound calls get told that i cant receive calls and doesnt go to voicemail.

Outbound calls will go directly to "call ended".

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Hi Northern DJ,

Tried what you suggested with the network operator and could immediately make a call. Switched over to GSM only and that could make the call also.

Im not to confident this is the issue fixed so ill try again making a call when im out and about (office is poor for reception)

I reckon it has something to do with the switch between 2g/3g but cant pinpoint. hopefully Matt or yourself may know the cause.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Hi azyk

With the information that you have given, I don't believe that this is a signal issue in the area.

What I would suggest is to send the phone away for repair.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

I'm running into the exact same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S2 that I'm using for business.  I can't make calls --  I get the "Call Ended" message even before a connection appears to be made.  I can't receive phone calls either and calls don't get routed to voice mail.  It's as if I am not registered onto the network.  Although the behaviour is intermittent, it's rendering my phone useless for work.  The very odd thing is - when I put my O2 SIM card in the Samsung Galaxy S2, it works flawlessly.  I've NEVER observed this behaviour with the O2 SIM card. At the advice of Vodafone tech support, I replaced my Vodafone SIM card with a new one as they said my SIM card was "old".  When the new SIM card was activated, the problem remained the same and the intermittent behaviour appeared to occur more frequently!

So here's what works and doesn't work:

Vodafone SIM + Samsung SG2 - Can't make or receive phone calls intermittently (more frequently with the new Vodafone SIM)

Vodafone SIM + Blackberry BOLD - No problems with outgoing/incoming calls

O2 SIM + Samsung SG2 - No problems without outgoing/incoming calls

It appears to be some strange combination of the Vodafone SIM and the Samsung SG2 phone that is causing this behaviour to occur.

I'd appreciate any insights here other, especially what the use above did to (hopefully) get the issue resolved.

Thanks.

E. Martin

Similar issues, I kept getting call catcher messages. I would dial a number and get nothing,

Screen would show connecting animation but no actually call placed. Call catcher issue was also happening

to my daughter. I have an SII ans he has a Wildfire. Both on Voda.

Popped into a voda shop and they did the reset trick, Choose another network then back to Voda. Same problem.

Changed to GSM only and it appears to be better but using the internet whilst out is so slow...

Still got the GPS issue with my SII also.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Hi Guys,

I must admit that this is a bit of a strange one and shouldn’t be behaving like this.

Can I ask what firmware you are running? (Dial *#1234#)

If you aren’t on I9100BUKJ3 I would recommend updating the software to this and trying again, if this fails or you are unable to update the software then a free of charge repair would be the next step.

We are currently investigating the GPS issue from a different thread.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

I am having the same issue. Bought a Galaxy S2 over Christmas and it worked perfectly for the first 2 weeks. Earlier this week I was waiting on a delivery and received no calls for a couple of hours.

Then I got a text for a voicemail although my phone hadn't missed any calls. Tried calling voicemail but was unable to dial out.

Turned phone on and off and after reboot received 5 or 6 texts saying I missed calls over a 3 hour period, and a bunch of voicemails from an irate delivery man!

My phone log had no record of any missed calls, during the time I couldn't receive calls I had sent and received normal text messages, had been on gmail and my phone showed 3 bars of signal (from what I can remember).

The problem has reoccurred 3 times in the last few days and renders the phone pretty useless as there's no way of knowing your uncontactable until you actually make a call.

I also have a vodaphone signal booster in my house where the problem has happened twice so should have full strength 3g signal? Kind of irritating as love the phone but not much point in keeping it if it can't stay connected to a network.

I've checked the firmware and I'm on the latest version, just strange that the issue didn't show up till a few weeks of use.

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

I ultimately had to return to the phone to the place I purchased it.  They're sending it off to Samsung for "repair" and said it would take about 10 business days.  Let's see what happens...

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Strang that i have just recently had this in my area, and it was vodafone that was at fault

Now thats a area fault

Now there is another were Vodafone servers to not see your phone they have had this and it was a simm card problem

But You could not make a call on 2G or 3G

Now one thing i found out is if a vain is down or over used you can do nothing, but they can check this as well

This is not a easy one, But have you tried going to another area, this will rule out the Aerial

But if Vodafone are not seaing the phone on 3g then it will not do anything

The way 3G works is your logged on to your local Areial and the Areial knows your there and has a list of people there, Now that areial is then logged on to Vodafone

So when some one makes a call to you  it first goes to Vodafone they no

your phone is on, If it was not the person would get the person your calling is switched off

( Now if your out of range because your phone has not sent the signal to Vodafone your switched off)

They get the Can not connect message

Now if your phone is on and your in range the areial is supposed to connect you

Now here is were it can go wroung, Your phone can see the areial the areial knows your there but it does not know who you are or what your phone is, So logging back in sometimes fixes that

Unles there is a Fault

The other is the Areial is over used its hit its max, This is only a Temp problem and should sort its self out

Ulsess there is a Fault

Thankfully most Faults get reported and the Areials are supposed to report faults

There is alot to rule out here and it can take some figureing and gess work

Clearly 2G works on its own and if 3G works on its own then yes it could be the switch

Which works buy Logging you off the 3G and Auto Loging you onto 2G Now it is rare for this to fail unless the firmware has been messed with Networks Have been known to remove stuff

Sorry for the long reply

But you need to do eliminations of what works when and how write them down

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

Hi James25,

Sure we can help!

The trouble is you've no postcode in your profile, nor have you supplied it in this thread and without it I cannot pinpoint your serving site to ascertain if there are any issues surrounding your local area.

From your description I can only assume the problem is capacity/congestion related. This could be down to a nearby cell site having problems and other sites having to pick up the extra work.

Could you either post your postcode or update your profile so we can nail down any local site issues please? Failing that please use the search function in our Faults Board and enter the first part of your postcode to see any known issues in your area.

Cheers,

Lee

Re: Not receiving call / Can't make calls

[ Edited ]

Hi James25,

There are still a few things which may point to the source of the issue.

For example, it would also be good to know if you have the same issue wherever you are or just at this home location. This would allow us to see the performance in comparison to both the other handsets and the location.

Similarly, can you also try swapping your SIM with one of the others when this next happens and seeing if the issue stays with the handset or follows the SIM? If the latter, then I'd suggest popping into your local Vodafone shop and requesting a replacement SIM card.

As Lee suggested, though, the most likely cause based on your description is congestion-based on your serving site, possibly due to a fault in the area. Although it's not a densely covered as central London, there are still a number of sites in the UB4 area, and the 3G signal does show as variable in some areas. To pin down the ones serving you, we'd need the full postcode. If you don't want to post that here, then if you go to the eForum homepage, click "My eForum Settings" and select "Personal Information", then you can add your postcode there securely and we can view it to check your nearest sites.

Also, are you experiencing the same issue over both 2G and 3G, or just one? You can test this by setting the handset to 2G only to see what happens:

Samsung Galaxy Y - Manage My Data Settings - Choose Network Mode

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dave
