SGS2 GPS and Data connection mode

I've just migrated from SonyEricsson Satio and Orange networks. Both were a disaster.
I hope I've done right by moving over to a network with better coverage and a better fone. So far so good with the fone.
2 things I'm having trouble with:
1)I've tried to get Google maps to find my location using GPS. It works ok if I enable the wifi and Mobile networks assistance, but GPS on it's own.....just doesn't find me. I'm aware there are issues with getting GPS lock on the first go. But I've been trying several times at >5mins.
2) I usually keep my data connections off to save battery. So 3G is off. But when I turn it on to enable internet and google maps outside of my WiFi, I'm connected to the Edge protocol/network. This is supposed to be 3 times faster than GPRS, but I get no data connection. I have to force 3G/HSDPA+ using WCDMA, or some other permutation, before I get a data connection.....when it does, I'm happy with the speed. But is there something in the setting that is choosing E(GPRS) over 3G/HSDPA. Even though I have usable UMTS coverage.
I've gone into the system setup using *#197328640#*, but find the array of settings bewildering.
Otherwise, it's an awesome fone so far. Bu that's not hard beating the SE Satio.

Keep WiFi and Mobile Networks assistance enabled! No need to disable!

No need to keep turning off Data, the phone is designed to be connected all the time.
Your phone is probably set to "GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode)", so if the strongest signal is produced by "E" GSM mode then the phone will select that!
You can choose just "WCDMA" but if you are in a poor signal area then this may have an adverse effect.

Hi TSD,
On point 1) I know you get better response, but the whole point of just having the GPS enabled, and not the Wifi/Data network assistance...is to check the GPS chip actually works.
2) With the phone connected all the time, the battery gets rinsed. Doesn't take much effort to enable WiFi and WCDMA and data packets
