Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock

Hi zzubnik,

Unfortunately I currently don’t have access to the firmware release notes however from what you have put in your post I can see that you aren’t on the latest release as the latest release should show as;

Software Version I9100BUKJ3

Customisation level I9100VODKI2

Please can you try to update to this version and let me know how you get on.

James

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock

James, as I said in the previous post, the update has nothing to do with GPS from what I've read, and many people have complained that the update has ruined their phone.

I am not willing to put faulty software onto my phone, which will almost definitely not fix the problem.

Unless you can assure me that the update will not mess my phone up (as it has for many others) and that it will make a difference, I will not risk it. I need my phone to be functional at all times.

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock

Hi zzubnik, apologies for the confusion- the firmware update had nothing to do with the previous GPS issue. That said, GPS is now working for everybody and you're the only person still reporting a fault, so it's likely an individual fault with your handset which is causing this rather than the issue reported in this thread.

In a situation like that, we'd first of all advise a software update, and otherwise send the phone away for repair- there's nothing else we could suggest to get this working.

I hope you manage to get it sorted.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks Tom. It's odd. Sometimes it works immediately, and well. Sometimes it locks quickly, but loses it on and off Sometimes it won't lock at all.

Thanks for the reply anyway. I think I'll choose just living with it for the moment. I can't afford to not have the phone on me, and I don't want the problems the update has been thought to cause.

Thank you for the reply.

[ Edited ]

Tom, I don't think it's an individual problem.  I can confirm that I am still having the problem.  I cannot get a gps lock when mobile data is enabled.  I have to turn it off to get a lock.  Lock is not brilliant either, only 10-15m accuracy.  I am a runner and use it to track my runs, placed over a map data is not accurate.  I did a reboot with battery removal and still not better.

Output from *#1234#

PDA:I9100BUKJ3

PHONE: I9100BUKI1

CSC: I9100VODKI2

Help would be great!

*EDIT* Just went outside and did a test - It appears to work now with Network connection on and off, accuracy is also better, I stand corrected!

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

I had this problem back in November last year when everybody was complaining about it then. I updated my firmware, rebooted, etc and it didn't fix the problem at all. I noticed, like a lot of people did at the time, turning off the data comms allowed it to work better although it took time to get a lock.

Then all of the sudden after a few weeks of complaining everybody's, including mine, GPS started to work again absolutely perfectly providing a lock within seconds.

My GPS has been working fine since then up until just after the start of the New Year again and now I have exaclty the same problem as I had before.

Please could somebody tell me how to fix this as it is really becoming annoying now. I am sure it has got to be something to do with the way Vodafone are sending their GPRS signal.

Thank you.

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi cteeder,

As mentioned previously in the thread, the fix for this had nothing to do with firmware updates, but it's unlikely the problem has resurfaced as we've only got one report of this. I monitor this thread and so will keep an eye out for more, posts, but at the moment this looks like an individual handset fault to me.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi.

It's definitely not an isolated problem. I bought my galaxy s2 last month and the gps has never been working properly, which is quite annoying given that the gps is one of the main reasons why I wanted this phone. My phone runs 2.3.5. I tried hard reboot as well but no improvement.

Some help would really be appreciated, thanks!

Nate

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi Tom,

Well I can't get a gps location  in google maps for instance. When I use the 'GPS Status' app, it finds generally up to 10-11 sats but can't get a fix at all, or very occasionnally after a while I would get 3fix/7sats at best, and then I can start google maps and get an approximate location for a while. But most times I just won't get anything

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi nathinsa

The best thing you can do in this situation is have the phone sent away for repair. For more information on this check the link below;

Vodafone Repairs Thread

Please let us know how you get on with this.

Thanks

[ Edited ]

I'm on my second Galaxy S2 because of this problem, and it's still erratic. Needed it last night and after half an hour we found where we were going more by luck than judgement, and the gps still hadn't locked on. Perhaps mine is an individual problem too, again, like all the other individual problems on here, and not an issue with Vodafone, as the Tech Team likes to keep saying.

I also try to use a tracking app, endomondo, and I have to put the gps on ages before I go out in the vain hope there might be a lock.

Please sort it, Tech Team, or at least come up with a better reply.

Thank you.

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. The problem is definitely not a handset fault. My girlfriend has exactly the same phone and is with Vodafone. She has experienced exactly the same problem with hers at exactly the same times as me.

Strangely both our GPS's have started working again since I sent my last message. I wonder how long for though?

I have friends with the same handset who use different service providers and their GPS's seem to always be working problem free!!

I would be most gateful if Vodafone wold look into this problem a bit more seriously and come up with a better solution.

Many thanks.

Best regards,

Chris

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Following the GPS thread. mine is not exactly mega quick but I always get a location lock now even if I am indoors . This has only been the case since I had the firmware update a few months ago. Have you all had the firmware update? If not try it, it has worked ok for me since then

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

I have to say I am not massively thrilled to have to send it away and lose all my saved data from apps and launcher, especially since according to other users there might be nothing wrong with my handset. But I guess if that's the only solution.... I'll save what I can tonight and send it away tomorrow. Will let you know if it helps...

Cheers,

Nate

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Hi there. I have had Galaxy S2 since June. I have updated as and when the updates have become available. My gps has never had a proper fix. I think it maybe worked once or twice with nav. I can use wireless networks to use location in applications. My last update was over the air in December some time. I have tried to do #1234# but it says unknown command. If I go to about phone it says I am on 2.3.5....baseband version I9100BUKI1. Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKJ3-CL647431 root@DELL155 #2. Build number. GINGERBREAD.BUKJ3 What do I need to do to fix this problem? I have tried getting fix in airplane mode, with 3G and wifi off, with them on and a whole other host of ideas that i have been given scouring online forums. I spoke to technical services, the woman seemed to give up hope with the ideas we were rtying and the Phone went dead, I never heard back so I gave up as I waited on phone for ages to start with. Please help Kind regards James

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

My phone has now come back from repair, with a nice accompanying letter saying that the fault had been fixed by upgrading the software to the latest version... except it hasn't... The GPS is still not working, which kind of makes sense since I already had the latest firmware. At any rate, staff in the shop was really nice and helpful and put me through to customer service who is going to replace my phone tomorrow.  Who knows, maybe that'll work... :smileywink:

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

And now they sent the phone to the wrong address. I took a day off work for nothing. And their system is down, so I have to call again and explain everything all over again. Vodafone, this is ridiculous!!!!!  What a shame I just renewed my contract. First opportunity and I'm out. Unbelievable.

Re: SGS2 - GT-I9100 : GPS issues - taking ages to get a lock again

Problem solved... not. Got a replacement phone, which had exactly the same problem, so clearly not a hardware issue. After which customer service sent me to the samsung repair centre in Angel. And the chap there said that it was a known issue which manifests differently on various phones but which was exclusively due to the Vodafone firmware, i.e., whatever vodafone has done to modify the Samsung firmware (all that for a couple of useless apps...). All that running around for nothing. So, back to square one, it IS a Vodafone issue. Please Vodafone sort it out. Or provide with another phone.

Thanks,
