SGS2 Screen Brightness

Sorry for the swathes of questions, I promise this will be the last one :smileyhappy:

I just received my GS2 in the post today and it is a great phone, however I have noticed that the screen's brightness when on auto-brightness fluctuates between very bright and very dim. Having googled this, it appears that I am not alone, and apparently Samsung has released a firmware update to rectify this.

However, when connected to Kies, it says my firmware is up to date... how do I solve this issue?! I am keeping it on a fixed brightness for now and it is eating into the already quite poor battery life.

There is a fix but it seems to be the Open Phones at the moment it sounds like your phone is a VOD one, If so you will get it to Tecnical tenis game were Samsung will blame Vodafone and Vodfone will blame samsung and your the tennis ball.

Contact your local service centre they can put the fix for you another way, Its a Firmware glitch that they no they have caused

I think we had this back in the 2.1 days on the Galaxy s i think !!!!

Re: SGS2 Screen Brightness

When you say my phone is a VOD one, do you mean it's locked to the network etc?

If you dial *#1234# you'll get a display of your phone version.

The PDA and PHONE entries will show your firmware version while the CSC shows the branding of the phone.

If the CSC is I9100XEU..., then you have an unbranded UK phone and kies should offer you the latest official Samsung firmware with the fix.

If it's something like I9100VOD... then you have a vodafone branded handset and kies will only offer you the latest approved vodafone firmware which I think is 1 or 2 minor versions behind and without the fix.

The phone comes unlocked from vodafone regardless of branding.

It is not locked as such you should be able to put another simm in and it will work after a re scan.

What VOD means they sold the phone(Vodafone) to you and there looking after the firmware of the phone and the garantee but that can be sorted if need be.

Re: SGS2 Screen Brightness

Hi,

Staying on this theme, can someone confirm that when the battery charge drops below a certain percentage, the screen dims quite dramatically, and you can't adjust the brightness setting (greyed out) in the 'display' menu?  Has this been changed to allow the user to choose to have the display on full blast, at the peril of increasing battery consumption, or are we stuck with this?  Seems a shame we can't tailor our phones to be whatever brightness we choose.  BTW, the Power saving mode is off.  You acn momentarily get the brightness off by toggling the power saving mode, but that's not perfect......

Can something be changed in the service menu?

Thanks

Re: SGS2 Screen Brightness

Hi guys,

Alex_Ma - The guys here are spot on. It will depend on whether you have a Vodafone-branded handset or an unbranded one. For the difference, please check out our firmware faq.

KMan2011 - Even though power saving mode is switched off, can you check the Power Saving Mode menu in the settings of the handset to see if anything is set for "Power Saving Mode on at...". Also, check the brightness settings in the same menu to see if anything is set there. If so, it is possible that these settings are overriding the On/Off switch for power saving.

If so, try setting the "On at" power level to the minimum available and the brightness level to your preferred setting, which will ensure the minimum interference on this from the handset settings.

Let us know how you get on, and if I've been of any help, please leave a little feedback!

Dave
