The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I have a new Vodafone Samsung Galaxy S2 and like thousands of others, if internet forums are to be believed, I have the "dreaded case echo problem". I.e. when I use any kind of protective case on the phone the person at the other end of the line hears a very echoey and distored voice and often we cannot communicate. I can hear them perfectly well. When the case is removed, the problem goes away.

According to forums like XDA etc, the problem is to do with the noise reduction microphones interacting with cases. Some S2's have it, some do not due either to different firmware, parts or luck.

I called Vodafone but they just say it has noting to do with them as they only provide the phone service. However surely they are the retailer of the phone and therefore are responsble under consumer law?

Who is responsible and how can I get it sorted?

Yes I know I can use the phone without a case but if I do, it will get broken.

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

This is a sticky one

and how the consumer law is looked at now as always when a new popular phone comes out there are a shed load of cases from company's all trying to cash in

Now if a case is effecting the phone it does boil down to the case manufacture on a previous phone the N97. there was a well known at the time case company called body glove they did a case with a magnetic catch that effected the phone the case was recalled and cost the firm a lot

Now Samsung will tell you that its a third party case and there responsible for testing the case with the phone

and i have noticed cases coming out befor the phone does so how do the test them

Now you can nip to your local samsung service centre who will also do covers and will no about the problem and they might be able to help

you can also test the mic you self by recording using  Voice Recorder app from the market then play it back on a PC

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I don't believe it is down to case manufacture becuse because pretty much all cases make this happen if they are of a design which involves holes over the microphones, it only happens on some phones not all, and can apparently be solved by Samsung after which the phone works with all cases. To me that all adds up to a fault in some some phones.

I can't really "nip" to a Samsung centre because they are over half an hours drive away. I spoke to them on the phone and they'd want to keep the phone until after Christmas.

I can say that Samsung can not simply fix it :-(

I have suffered from the echo problem, had one handset replace by VF and new handset still had problem when using my case. Took phone to Samsung, they replaced the part, but problem is still there! Thinking a new case will be on Christmas list which is annoying, but at least I only paid a few £ for this case in Tesco on a special.

The one on the case not the one on the phone but that worked on his case and it should have a small hole at the moment

I don't want to seem rude here, so apologies if I am but you have bought a case made by a third party (ie not Samsung or Vodafone) and yet you are blaming one (or both) of them for the fact that it doesn't work properly........

Surely your dispute is with the makers of the cover for not testing it properly before selling the product!

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I'd agree with you about the case makers being responsible for testing the case with the phone.

That said, I went to the Vodafone shop on Oxford St yesterday and asked about their cases, as I'd expect them to sell cases that don't cause a problem for the phones. Tested it in the shop, and it still had the problem! The sales guys had never heard of the problem and tried to blame the phone, but I showed them that taking the case off does stop the echo!

It's just annoying that I can't seem to find a case that stops the problem!

Can anyone here suggest a case that they use, that doesn't cause the caller to hear their voice echoing back? (remembering that as the Galaxy user, everything sounds perfect from my end!)

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I'd also just like to add that at the Samsung repair centre, they were well aware of the issue with the noise reduction mic on the phones and tried the fix for it - so to say that Samsung aren't to blame isn't entirely true as it seems that it is the NRM that is at fault, which is on the phone, not the case.

Is it the hole on at the top next to the headphone socket or the one at the bottom which has been made larger?

I use the otterbox commuter case and have no problems with that. Plus its great protection for the phone.

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I stopped using a case on mine and im still getting an echo, the last call I just made went like this

"are you on speaker phone"

"no"

"well its like an echo, its too bad I need to end this call"

I have now emailed samsung as I can't go on with 50% of my calls working

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

Right you need to do a proses of elimination

You need to try another phone on Vodafone on 3G

The reason for this is 3G can cause this if a transmitter is playing up

On the phone try 2G test the signal again

Down load a recording app that records your voice this tests the mic out

it is possible it could be a number of things but you need to rule stuff out

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

I had my handset replaced yesterday byVF and this new unit does not have the echo problem when I have the case on!

This leads me to think that it is the unit that is faulty, but Samsung aren't sure how to fix it as the service centre replaced the speaker unit on my last phone but it still didn't fix it!

Sorry I can't be of more help as to how to fix it, but thought I'd let you know my issue has been resolved (and without having to buy a new case!)

Re: The S2 case echo problem - who is responsible?

if you check your firmware it may be on 2.3.3 which seems to be fine most are having this on 2.3.5 which leads me to think there are problems with the firmware

and it seems to only effect Vodafone phones
