bad signal

hey guys. since i have had my phone (galaxy s2) since june 2011 i have been getting very bad signal when im indoors. even when my phone shows i have a signal for some reason people cant ring or text as it says my phone is switched off. on vodafones website it shows my area has the best coverage. also i know my phone is not faulty as i tried an o2 sim in it for a couple days and had no signal problems at all. today i went in the vodafone shop and they said i could have a faulty sim so they replaced it but as soon as i get indoors i loose signal. does anybody else seem to be having these problems. [ Edited ]

PLEASE ALSO LOOK AT THE SCREENSHOTS OF MY PHONE WITH ANOTHER SIM COMPARED TO THE VODAFONE SIM. ALSO THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT MY SIGNAL BACK IN AUGUST AND NOVEMBER LAST YEAR I SPOKE TO CUSTERMER SERVICE AND I GOT £10 OFF MY BILL. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE SORTED INSTEAD OF GETTING MONEY OFF AS THAT STILL DONT FIX MY PROBLEM. I AM SERIOUSLY THINKING OF CANCELLING THE CONTRACT AND I CERTAINLY WONT BE PAYING THE CANCELLATION FEE.

TEMPLATE

----------------------------------

1). Does the issue happen in just one location?

mostly when im in harlow but i have had problems with signal outside harlow

2). Does the issue occur if you try your SIM card in a different phone?

as i said in my first post this is a brand new sim and it is not phone related as ive tried a t-mobile and orange sim and get high speed signal with 3-4 bars vodafone i get nothing. your site says i should be recieving perfect signal. my dad also has the iphone 4 and he also has problems with signal and delayed text messages and calls not getting through.

3). Can you check your coverage here? Please bear in mind that this is only a guideline and can never be 100% accurate, particularly for indoor coverage.

coverage is saying i should be getting a good signal indoors and outdoors but even when im outside i get nothing so its not indoor related.

4). Can you check our Faults Board, which contains all the mast issues we’re aware of.

there are no faults in my area.

5). Does this issue happen on 2G/3G or both. To check this, you can amend your phone's network settings, our Help Centre contains all the instructions, just select your model of phone and then select "network".

on both. when i switch to 2g my phone shows up with 1-2 bars with an e next to it but call and text are not coming through.

6). What is the full postcode of where the issue occurs (if you’re uncomfortable with this appearing on the forum, then please add it to your profile by clicking “My eForum Settings” on the front page and then selecting “Personal Information”

cm186bz but this happens in other locations aswell

7). How far you have to travel to get signal

the closer i get to harlow town centre as i believe you have a signal booster as ive been told by one of your store collegues

8). Do you get any error messages/tones if you’re having problems with calling/texting

most of the time i cant get through on the call in the first place. text messages dont noramlly fail but are serverly delayed when recieving them.

if this isnt sorted then i will have to take it further as im paying for something that im not able to use and and ive never had a problem like this from any other provider. this is a vodafone related problem and the phone is not faulty otherwise it wouldnt work with another sim.

Re: bad signal

Hi DanielGillies,

We will try to give you the services when you want them. However, due to the nature of mobile technology, it’s impossible to provide a fault-free service.

I have taken a look at the postcode area that you have supplied and can see that the local site (30089) which is located on Tilegate Road is currently up and running and taking calls and texts as normal.

I can see that there has been a power link issue in the area that connects to the local sites which should now have been resolved by the utility company.

Please can you do a manual roam and let me know how you get on over the next couple of days and what areas you struggle to get signal in?

James

Re: bad signal

this is not an issue that ive been having for a few days this has been like this since july/august last year. its mainly when im at home that i have delayed messages and people not getting through. i have noticed i start to get a signal when i get round the corner from my house. i understand you cant provide a fault free service and normally i dont complain but when i recieve text messages a day late it gets very frustrating. i also struggle to get a signal when im in hertfordshire but thats as far as i travel really.

Re: bad signal

This sounds familiar

Put your phone in to GSM only and try and ring from a land line

This should work spot on

if so the phone and simm should be ok

Now download a app called opensignal

this shows what Ariel your 3G is locked on to and what other possible aerials are around

Try going to another area this will rule out the phone

In the other area do a network search let the phone lock on, Then go home

Try the land line call again

Now what that does it shows on Vodafones log

A. were you was when you loged on

B. it then should show were you logged off

This is what has happend

The transmitter does not no your there, it new you was at some point, strange i no somtimes you can do a network search and it logs you back in, but after a peroid of time will boot you off .

Now Vodafone have no idea were your are hence the message

this can also happen if the transmitter is over used as it drops in signal strength

Now having another phone helps normally your old one, this is allso a good proof of rulling out the phone

Re: bad signal

Hi DanielGillies,

As James and Northern-dj have suggested, a manual roam can help as it forces the handset to reconnect, so if there has been anything lingering from a previous fault stopping the SIM from reconnecting to this site it can override it.

Whilst James checked the main site serving your area, I note that you're close to another cells coverage, so I've checked that site as well (ref 6786) and this one appears to have issues which would affect any of it's usual coverage, which may also extend to your current location as your site works to pick up any traffic it can to help..

With this having been so long-lasting, can you also confirm for me if there have been any large constructions or blockages gone up  between you and the mast on the industrial estate, or any large trees directly in the way? If so, these may have caused a "line of sight" issues which means that the site appears to be acting normally but that a small area is being blocked and cannot get a strong signal from a different site.

Dave

[ Edited ]

nope everything is pretty much the same as it was when i moved into the area 5 years ago. what i cant work out is i was on vodafone when i first moved in and had no signal problems at all. i also have a vodafone iphone 4 which has the same signal problems. what do you mean by manual roaming. do you mean to manually connect to vodafone instead of letting it do it automatically? . yesterday i checked my phone for signal whilst going to the shops and although i picked up a signal it was 1-2 bars with a h as data which i believe is  hsdpa. where i live theres a cycle track with a few tall trees but that has been there since i moved in.

unfortunately the galaxy s2 is not supported by open signal although when i open it it says distance is 113m and the direction thingy is all other the place. signal strength metre just says scanning.

Re: bad signal

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this what Sure Signal was created for...... You should consider yourself lucky that you have the service you do, up here in the highlands we would love to have your problems (and we pay the same as you)

Re: bad signal

They mean moving around your area, If you out and about take note how good your signal is

This sound like if you have no signal then a suresignal box will sort that out

It can happen if you have had this on previous phones

This is no ones fault it can happen that the signal just does not get to were you are

Now you can argue if you live in a Hotspot but not if its varible

Now it also depoend on what the sales staff have told you, I was told and on record that i was in a hotspot

and i wasn't

a sure signal box filled the gap and works well

I have done for customers on Orange with the same issue and it was samothing to do with the house

But Orange do nothing to help

Re: bad signal

[ Edited ]

i brought the sure signal box yesterday and it works great but i shouldnt of had to pay for it as i should be getting a good signal in my area. i never had this problem on my previous handset on vodafone but now i have the iphone 4 and the samsung galaxy s 2 both with pretty much no signal. if i got a good signal 3-4 years ago on vodafone and now im getting nothing then surly somethings gone wrong as surly the service is meant to improve not get worse.

i did a manual roam yesterday around harlow and most places i had 0-2 bars and some spots i got the full 4 bars on hsdpa. ive worked out that if i leave my phone on gsm (2g) then i get a full signal no matter where i go but as i use the data service alot its not practical to have to keep going in settings everytime i use it. also do vodafone have there own signal masts or is it shared with the other networks.

yes it was created for areas that have a weak signal and i have had to buy one yesterday, but what im saying is that im meant to be in an area that has good signal and i used to have a good signal on my previous phone with vodafone in the same area.

Re: bad signal

With Gsm you will find that the signal is better as Gsm has been around for ages and has had more tiem for vodafone to polish

There 3G has not got as much coverage some transmitters are still only Gsm

But they are Upgrading SLOWLY!!!!!

I do agree having to buy somthing to use there network is not on, Hopfully the Eforum can sort somthing out for you

Re: bad signal

Hi DanielGillies,

I understand your frustration however we are unable to give a Sure Signal to all of our customers that are experiencing network issues due to the cost that this would involve.

Unfortunately due to the nature of mobile technology it is impossible to provide a fault free service all of the time no matter how hard we try.

When it comes to the area that you are in I can see that our network teams have looked into this for you and there are now 3 new 3G sites planned in the area to become live within the next 12 months.

Unfortunately there isn’t much more that we can do as the local sites seem to be working fine in the area.

James
