Samsung USB Charger Question

Naturally the manual warns us that the S3 battery may blow up if we use a non-Samsung charger but I have a few USB chargers going around the house. Surely they all run the same standards and thus any USB charger would be ok?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

I also have used a Nokia USB charger on my previous HTC phone for years. Is it really so bad to use other manufacturer's USB chargers?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

I used my Mrs HTC charger last night and it didn't cause any problems.

I thought the point with the micro USB was they were all the same?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

That's what I thought but there is a strong warning in the S3 quick start guide!

Hi StephenCWLL

Thanks for your post. I’ve just got to pop on here and let you know that while down at Samsung a few weeks ago, the head of the device development made a point of mentioning that other adaptors would cause issues on the Samsung Galaxy S3, due to the different voltages used.

He did mention that it would never fully charge and would take a considerable amount of time longer to charge than the actual S3 charger. Just for your information :smileywink:

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

The S2 charger charges the phone fully, so they must be the same voltage...

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

Was he refering to the plug or the USB cable? What if you plugged the USB cable into your laptop's USB socket and then the other bit into the S3? Where is the different voltages there? Is that a risk also?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

I think the suggestion/implication there is that the PC USB will not charge the phone fully.

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

That  souds like samsing saying there charger is differant

Well i use my Galaxy S charger now that has all the tecnical info on this

But the new one has not other then a V8 sticker how they got these through customs i don't no unless there a standard USB adapter Now there is a standard that Samsung has to comply with

see

http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/716062/eu_announces_micro_usb_as_phone_charger_standard.html

and also on

http://www.gsmarena.com/microusb_to_become_the_standard_charger_plug_in_the_eu_next_year-news-2181.p...

Now its the phone that controls as and when it charges, We had this with the Galaxy s it stops and 100% and then the phone starts to work, when you unplug it shoots down to 94%

All the adapter does its to reduce the Voltage down to the EU standard fo micro USB

Galaxy S   GT-I9000 Charger - Output = 5.0V - 0.7A

Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 Charger - Output = 5.0V - 1.0A

Average USB port - Output = 5.0V - 0.5A  (Range 4.7V - 5.25V)

Beat me to it dec. My current HTC Legend USB Charger plug is 5.0v and 1A.

So, I get the plug voltage/amp differences being an issue. That's fine. But I don't get why the USB cables would be much different? It's a USB standard surely?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

I have tried my HTC legend supplied usb cable and also a kindle sub cable and neither worked. Even with the Samsung plug. Strange!

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

What have they done with their USB cables? Don't they think of the environment? I have USB cables hanging around that I cannot use. One samsung cable isn't enough, I need two between home and work. Hmm, does one have to buy another?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

Not researched this but AFAIK usb is supposed to be limited to 0.5 A - I think the actual usb cable supplied with the SAmsung (or HTC desire) charger may have something different about the pinout which enables the phone to know its ok to draw more than 0.5A.

Not tried it but I strongly suspect that if you try a standard micro usb cable with the galaxy s3 it will only charge at 0.5 amp and hence will take twice as long.

Similarly a lot of car chargers only supply 0.5A the htc car charger gives 0.5A which is whats needed if you plan to use GPS in the car for extended periods.

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

the Amps are to coupe with a Bigger battery the output out of a PC is 1.0A

All that will happen is the battery on a lower Amp will take longer to charge

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

hi, ive got the usb cable that came in the box, and it took nearly 6 hours to fully charge. Is that the standard time? or does the samsung s3 charge slowly even in a walla socket?

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

Hi, have had my new S3 about a week now and have to say it didn't seem to take that long to charge and certainly not after the initial charge.

Re: Samsung USB Charger Question

I use my plug to charge my E-lite,it works a treat.

I charge my phone plugged into my pc at work, which only seems once in a blue moon.Would the effect of not charging the batteries to 100% every time not prolong the over all life of the battery? my Samsung laptop has a battery saving feature where it only charges to 80%
