If you're running JPY (2.2.1) then it isn't a Vodafone release, it's a generic Samsung release and changing your product code from VOD or KOR which I believe you had to XEU means it is a UK code so you should now get access to the same apps we can all get. Currently OTA updates aren't working, hopefully in the near future........

As an add on to my post above from what you have told us dominicsaul, you have changed the sales code to eu, be good to know what your product code shows.

I put jpy on and it was Kor and kies said i can not update this phone and the samsungmobile app did not work changed it to EU and kies said i had the uptodate firmware on. Now before the single file method i did 15 Samsung Galaxys on Orange and changed the product code to EU most have updated now through Kies and running well i have not had to do a thing to any of them.
the single file thing took some getting used to but i think Samsung should do a simular thing for kies we down load it and leave it so we can roll it back or forward when ever we want. End off the day this boils down to Money and how greedy Vodafone are they want us to buy apps from them in the past and music which we found out were 20% more well it back firered even carphone warehouse advise people not to buy from them. The only Phone that does not alow Vodafone to mess with it is the iphone and good on apple for standing there ground.
My wife got a tab from carphone warhouse and that has a EU code No branding Nothing, Her Htc desire has no branding on it
This is what we want Vodafone they offer the same deal as you so why would anyone in there right mind buy one from Vodafone Now well i won't i put my wifes sd in and she is on "3" and i got full coverage Vodafone is pants
Were is the Old Vodafone were has it gone ?????

Hi there.
Hoping that someone can help with the following.
While my handset was purchased from Vodafone, it originally had an unbranded product code of GT-I9000HKAXEU. A week or so ago I upgraded the firmware from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2.1 JPY, via the latest version of Kies. For 48 hours everything worked great. However, the first time I powered the phone off, I found I couldn't power it back on again. Spoke with Samsung customer support and when they realised the phone would not boot using the 3-button method they told me to take it to my nearest Samung Repair Centre.
Did this and they got the phone working again. However, the firmware they instyalled was Froyo 2.2 JP7. When I checked the product code I found it was now GT-I9000HKAVOD!
Can anyone tell me at what point the product code change is likely to have happened, after I'd upgraded to 2.2.1 JPY via Kies or after the repair centre had installed 2.2 JP7, and why this would have happened?
Cheers.

davende, you went from 2.1 to 2.2.1? I wonder if that in itself caused a problem, bypassing the 2.2.
Anyway, samsung have downgraded you so get yourself round there again and tell them to unbrand your phone and get the 2.2.1 back on to it.

Thanks for the responses!
I know it's not a replacement handset ................ took me forever to get the screen protector on like it is! I couldn't see that Kies was responsible, and that's been confirmed. So, must have been the Repair Centre. I wonder why they'd have changed the product code to Vodafone-branded? The Sim card was removed before the phone was taken to the engineers, so I don't see how they would have known it had originally been purchsed from Vodafone.
Be interesting to see what they have to say when I return it to the Repair Centre.

If your savvy enough then you can just flash JPY on yourself via Odin and change your product code back to XEU. It's easy to do and will take no more than 15 minutes of your time ![]()

@daveande
From your product code HKAVOD I'm guessing you still have a 16Gb Galaxy S.
This would suggest that you have not had a replacement. I'm sure most replacements would be an 8Gb model.
Although not great to have a VOD product code, the easiest solution would be to flash via Odin to JPY 2.2.1.
If you need help with this, just ask... ![]()
tsd.
Edit: Looks like I was too slow...

I can answer this as my phone has been to Samsung, Each phone has it's imi number (serial Number) Now Samsung no were that phone was sold to eg Vodafone Contractully they have to put Vodafone firmware on but in your case i would argue with the service centre all you tell them is you paid up front for this. My Service centre offered to remove the firmware as this was the secound time it had crashed, What they then do is unbrand the phone and see if its fine then they no its the firmware but they no. My imi number is on file and they have updated it saying the firmware was removed as it was faulty and not compatable with the phone factory firmware now installed and all is 100%
They get repairs sent to them from Vodafone mainly from scotland nine out of ten they told me were firmware that was the 2.1 update 1 now there on 2.2 they have slowed down but in farnes some of it was caused by kies as well. But not having the three button was a pain but he told me he went on a training day and Samsung should them how to fix this and it was only network phones that had this problem he ask why he got no answer.
What has still got them confussed is why they have not emplemented the fix, He said and in his word i hope they don't pull the same stunt as last time eg giving us a update that we think is somthing else they get inundated with work. He has said not to do the over the air update with the phone. He has said kies has got the recovery function which they have tested.
They did say that they don't get as many problems and the ones they have got are hardware. They hope it does not happen again but he did tell me they still bloat phones the HTC Desire HD it has that naff intro screen but only one app and two games which is not that bad but you still can not remove them and you nead a dataconnection not wifi to play them.
I hope with the new Galaxy S2 Vodafone have lernt but they havent with the Desire HD this is why Desire customers have not upgraded to the phone.
I could under stand the branding if the phone was cheeper but its not you can get the same deal from CPW on a non branded device

Yes, it's a 16GB model and the screen protector definitely identifies it as my orginal handset.
Thanks NJD for explaining when/how the Product Code change happened.
I have a feeling that the Repair Centre are going to say they don't have the 2.2.1 JPY firmware, in which case I guess I 'm going to have to bite the bullet and get to grips with flashing via Odin. I know there's lots of advice on how to do this, so apologies if the following have been answered already:
Changing the Product Code:
- Is this pre-requisite of flashing to 2.2.1 JPY via Odin?
- If not, I presume the reason for doing this is to get rid of VF bloatware and the dependency on them for future firmware upgrades?
- Should the PC be changed before or after flashing via Odin, or doesn't it matter?
- Where is the best description of the Product Code change procedure?
Cheers.

Hi Dave,
If your gonna bite the bullet and have a flash then you need to visit here and register which is free. Download Odin3 1.3 then scroll to the firmware section and click on Android - Samsung i9000 - then download I9000XXJPY which is the latest firmware JPY 2.2.1. There is also a guide on that site on how to flash but basically it's only one file which you place in the PDA field of odin then flash. You may also need to download 7Zip or winrar as you will have to extract the downloaded file before you can flash it
Once you have flashed the phone you will need to type in *#272*YOURIMEI* as this will display your product code. Choose XEU from the menu and click OK. This will install the XEU product code on your phone and it will now read I9000HKDXEU or it could read I9000HKAXEU. once this has been done your phone will reboot. Once rebooted then perform a factory reset on the phone and then your good to go and your handset will now be totally unbranded and when there is an offical update available from samsung then you will receive it straight away like the rest of us who have unbranded our phones!
Best of luck should you go ahead with it. P.S flashing your phone can cause it to brick so it's done entirley at your own risk. having said that it's very hard to brick the galaxy S. Just make sure your 3 button combo works before you flash!

Thanks again to all responders.
@ado28
- Seems to me that one of the most difficult parts of flashing is knowing which is the best version of Odin to use and where to download it from! I'd really appreciate a link to the Odin3 1.3 you mention.
- Re the PDA file you point to in Odin. Is this the downloaded firmare .tar file or does this first have to be decompressed?
- You say to change the PC to a debranded XEU one after flashing. Is that so as to make the phone capable of receiving subsequent Samsung firmware updates via Kies?
- If the anser to the above is "yes", could an upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1 be accomplished simply by changing the PC to an XEU variant and then upgrading via Kies? The reason I ask this is that when I upgraded from 2.2 to 2.2.1 via Kies EVERYTHING on the phone (contacts, apps, app data, Google accounts, email accounts) was preserved, apparently because Kies takes a backup of all of this prior to the upgrade and then restores it post upgrade. This is a real time saver!
- Have I read somewhere that Kies messes with the PC (restores it to the original?) each time it performs an upgrade. In my case, I wonder what it would determine the "original" to be, GT-I9000HKAXEU (which it was) or GT-I9000HKAVOD (which it apparently should have been!)?
Cheers.

Odin3 ver.1.3 HERE
I9000XXJPY HERE
At the moment you are on a single CSC ROM, i.e. VOD.
JPY is a multi CSC, which will give you many european codes, one of which is XEU.
You should always factory reset after a ROM Flash as to remove any remnants of the old firmware. Also download fresh copies of apps from Android Market.
The Flashing process won't delete the contents of your internal sd card. this is where apps are installed to.
So when you upgraded last time the system simply reintegrated them.
This can cause serious conflicts and errors. It is always advised to format internal and any external sd cards before a upgrade and also after, to make sure the new Rom has formatted the cards properly to it's system.
So if you follow the guide I pointed you to earlier you should be good to go.
If in doubt, ask more questions...
