Re: 2.2.1

@soup Im talking about NEXT update. I know XEU already have 2.2.1 which is JPY so was wondering why not any JS? release. @jim VOD is ahead meant they have the very latest ROM at the moment which XEU not.

Re: 2.2.1

@sonuneamol - ok, the VOD is official now I think, but I am running JS7(leaked) on XEU which is very fine and has been out for a couple of days. I think you will find that XWJS7 is newer than VODBUJS3.

Re: 2.2.1

Ado28 is working on some how to videos as long as his pc hangs in there !!!!!!!

but can we keep chat and banter on the custome rom threadabout Darkeys  and keep this for the 2.2.1 update so it does not confuse people we have three threads and they all seem to go the same way.

Now i'm a XEU user and i have tried the VOD rom on my mates phone and yes there was a improvement but he said why is it not as snappy as mine ?

the biggest test is the facebook app on my phone you press the back button and it goes straight back to the section to go on to the chat or other options, But on the VOD rom it hangs on a white screen for about 20 secounds then goes back this was the only app we put on.

so i put JPY on and he was shocked how fast his phone was, I have left him to have a play plus he got more apps free from samsung on jpy.

Now Back to XEU what update will we be getting will it be the JS7 or will it just be 2.3 now ?? or should i say 2.3.2 nothing offered on kies it says it has the latest firmware ???

For Vod users after you update you must do a factory wipe do not just update over the top, A factory wipe will remove all your apps and settings SO BACK UP ..... But after you have done this in Kies the firmware recovery will now work, this will roll the firmware back to 2.2 if you need to  then it will offer you the firmware again now this is stored somewere on your pc as it does not download it again. The only downside is if you change you PC or as in ado28 case starts making banging noises.

But i had a good old play with it yesturday i did try to roll it back on another pc and it asked for a code from samsung no doudt the hackers no were it is  but they seem to of ironed the bugs out of kies

Any one with problems shout

I used to use Kies with a registry hack to force the XEU upgrades. Now I use Odin3 ver.1.3

The Roms are from samfirmware.com.

I also install custom Roms using ClockworkMod. You simply place the Rom on your internal sd card and use ClockworkMod to flash it.

I am currently using Darky's 9.3 Extreme Edition custom Rom based on XWJS5 firmware.

Re: 2.2.1

[ Edited ]

I'm still getting my freeze on power down/up problem :smileymad:

When this happens the only way to get the phone to boot-up is via Recovery Mode after doing a factory reset, cache clear and internal sd-card reformat.  I've only ever seen this problem on Froyo 2.2.1, initially on JPY and now on the VF variant, JS3.  It never happened on Eclair or Froyo 2.2 JP7.  I've been trying to pin down the cause, but without any luck so far. Anyone else experienced something similar?

Also, how do you reformat the external SD card? If I go Settings > SD card and phone storage, the "Format SD card" option for the external SD card is greyed out.

When apps are installed from the Market, where are they stored.  Via Settings my internal SD card shows a total space of 13.43GB and "available" space of the same, implying they're not stored there? And the Settings > Applications > Manage applications "Move to SD card" option ........... does this move an app to the internal or external SD card?

Cheers.

Re: 2.2.1

Daveande - did you do factory reset before and after flashing new firmware? Haven't come across freezing as you mention but the good old factory reset solves a lot of problems.

Ext sd - if you press "unmount sd card" then the "format sd card" will be available to you.

Apps are kept on the internal storage I believe, and yes that option can move to ext sd, though this does not count for every app, some you just cant move.

It sounds to me like your external sd card isn't mounted correctly, this can cause start up problems as the system does a memory check.

Have you tried the phone without the external card in place?

Also make sure the sd card clicks into place, be careful as it can ping out!

Thanks tsd.

Hmmm ........ when I've had the problem I'm not sure that I've tried powering up with the external card removed.  I'll certainly try that next time.  I'm sure it's not popping out though, I'd have noticed that.

The one bit of your "for a trouble free upgrade" I've not taken hitherto is to reformat the external SD card, hence my ? regarding that.  I've since discovered that I need to unmount the card to get the "reformat" option.  It's possible that the problem occurs after having used an app that's been "moved to SD card" ............ which I'm sure must mean to the external SD card?  This time round I've left all apps where they are.  I'll leave things like that for a few days and if I do eventually move apps to the external card, I'll reformat it first.

Cheers.

Hi dave,

Your absolutely right mate, it's an unfortunate terminology. For future reference "move to SD card", does mean the external card.

Re: 2.2.1

I have used js3/js5/js7 as base for custom roms, have not flashed the bare stock js7, have found all 3 snappy but are they any better than jpy? I cant tell. For me all three lock on with gps quite quickly and pretty accurate. Have not used it as a driving aid so cant comment on navigation.

For battery, I feel you are better flashing different kernels rather than sticking with the stock one. If you want to try some of these then you should look at custom roms, you get more with them and you invalidate your warranty just the same with flashing a leaked rom.

Thanks jmc130

Yes, factory reset alone doesn't do the trick, need to reformat internal SD card too to get phone to boot.

The last time the problem occurred I know the last thing I did was use an external SD-resident app.  So, my latest attempt to isolate the problem is to NOT  have moved any apps to the external SD card.  So far so good.  Like I said, if I do eventually dare move apps to the external SD, I'll reformat it first.

Re: 2.2.1

These roms have come out after JPY mainly for the Branded.

if you look at previous roms on samfirmware when JPY came out the Networks get it.

They then tell samsung were there going wroung Cough Cough ya like networks no. so they then instead of working on the next up date have to spend time making other roms.

This is why Vodafones rom is based on the JS3 and the T Mobile one is based on TQ3 not on samfirmware yet.

But at the end you ask any custom rommer what is the best stock 2.2.1 they all say JPY .

If Samsung is haveing to do all these roms for networks no wonder were so behind, The proof to this is the Nexus s it has one just one not that samfirmware are missing any it just there is only one  and that is 2.3.3 now , and that has the same amout of custom people on it, And unbranded no network interferance. I no this cos they have told me and they have told me that they carn't roll out other updates until the previous are sorted. Orange caused the delay in us getting  2.2.1 this is why when you look at all the other JS roms and try and tell the difference as jimc130 has tryed ya carn't may be on some fancy test bed there might be some stupid 0.00001v differance.

The only roms that you can are custom roms so it boils down to the old statement if you want better then stock. You need Custom

Re: 2.2.1

[ Edited ]

Hi VT/Ado/Soup/Jim,

After flashing JS7 has your CSC changed? If yes then what it is now?

I downloaded both JS7 and JS3. I have following queries

Currently I'm on JPY (XEU). Flashed with registry hack back in december.

For JS7

----------

I got three files (PDA/PHONE/CSC). Which PIT file should I use?

What would be my CSC after flashing this ROM?

For JS3

---------

I got only one file. Would it be alright flashing with one file over JPY?

Will my CSC changed to VOD again?

What version of Odin should I use??

Ado I couldn't find your flash guide? Plz help me with it.

Re: 2.2.1

sonuneamol - you have to figure out what you want here. You are on stock 2.2.1 JPY which is a fine firmware. You are talking about flashing to a leaked firmware. I wouldnt do that myself. I have had both JS3 and JS7 on my phone by way of custom rom only- meaning that after the developer has fiddled about with that particular firmware to try and get rid of bugs etc. Crikey, there are bugs in samsungs official releases let alone the leaked ones.

So the safest way is to try these out by custom rom. As I said before I dont see difference between JPY and JSwhatever. I am learning that kernels make a difference and you can also easily put a different kernel on a stock rom.

So to sum up my advice is not to flash these leaked stock roms, you could go the kies route and get the vod 2.2.1 but then your codes will revert to vod. Think about the kernels, and think about custom roms(you will need to root phone)
