2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

Hi,

I last update thed firmware on my phone in January using KIES. KIES reports the current version of my firmware as:

PDA:JPX / PHONE:JPX / CSC:JPX (XEU)

Im on a vodafone pay monthly contract.

I want to update to gingerbread using KIES, but it keeps reporting 'This version of the device cannot be updated". What can I do to upgrade. The phone hasnt been rooted, or modified in any other way, the only software update done was from 2.1 to 2,2,1 using KIES, so not sure why i can't get 2.3.3 which appears to be currently available for some folkin the UK.

thanks

JC

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

It might be just that their servers are overloaded with people trying to update. As you haven't changed anything on the phone and have only upgraded with kies there should not be any problems - apart from the problem that is kies itself!.

Nope... Having the same problem here. Unbranded HKDXEU (G.B/Europe) with JPX rom.:smileyindifferent:

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

Same phone as above, but as I said, unbranded. Perhaps the JPX rom gets updated later than the JPY? Mine should have had it a few days ago... Anyone from Vodafone care to comment on how this works? Sorry for jumping into forum, I just couldent find reference to this little niggle elsewhere on the web.

It could just be that the official update for your particular Firmware is not released yet!

Vodafone did clear and return thier official Update incredibly quickly. (Credit to them!)

I'm sure it will be along soon.

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

Samsung released 2.2.1 JPX on the 19th December for XEU handsets and then a few days later (xmas eve), released JPY as a fix for JPX.

At the time there was a big hoo ha about whether JPX was indeed an officialy released firmware as people were getting it through Kies but only if they had hacked their PC's registry on a prior occassion.

Then some folk were saying that they WERE definitely being offered it who had an HKDXEU product code. It was established that this product code was for 16GB versions.

Now the Samsung servers offer you updates via Kies depending on what product code you have. I think its safe to say that going by above, that they release updates to 16GB and 8GB version at slightly different times.

Having said all that, I didn't realise that there were still people on JPX as already stated, it was a faulty ROM and replaced by JPY fairly swiftly.

It could be that HKDXEU 16GB users who are stuck on JPX are now in some kind of no mans land when it comes to updating via Kies.

ie. it won't offer you the update.

But if this turns out to be the case, you can always use odin to flash it manually or take it to a Samsung service centre to get it done.

@VT

Slight correction:

HKAXEU = 16Gb

HKDXEU = 8Gb

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

thanks for the correction soup.

I still think that people on JPX are going to struggle to be offered gingerbread via kies as this ROM wasn't officially released.

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

Ok Then...

So, somehow, we are gonna have to force update from JPX to JPY. Is there any safe way to do this? My phone was origanlly a T-Mobile UK unlocked one i got off Ebay, and because they took so incredibly long to update to froyo, I spoofed Kies, and got the unbranded HKDXEU JPX downloaded from Kies. At least Vodafone are on the ball with updates!

How would it be best to proceed? Id like to keep it as Kies as possible, to ensure a smooth update. Any ideas?

Thanks loads,

M

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

@Marbles

I get the impression you would not be interested in Flashing the Firmware yourself using Odin, or am I wrong?

I think you would be better off taking your phone to a Samsung Service Centre and letting them Flash Gingerbread for you.

If you would like to do it yourself, then we can talk you through it. :smileywink:

Ado28 has made some YouTube video's on using Odin HERE, you can get an idea of what you would be doing. ( his youtube name is puggereduk)

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

To be honest, Id like to somehow update JPX to JPY using Kies, rather than Odin. The carpet bombing approach kinda scares me. Is there some way to force Kies to update to JPY?

And thank you for all you're help. Much appreiciated.

'The carpet bombing approach' is using Kies.

Going by what you have written you need to use odin which is stable and will ensure you will receive a decent update.

It is far less scarey then you think.

You just down load the files from Samfirmware.com

Un-zip the files

Stick them in odin and flash.

There are instructions on Samfirmware.com or as Soup has said, Sean has spent time doing a video showing how to do it.

ODIN = easier/better/faster/safer

KIES = Junk

@Marbles

You can use Odin to get you onto JPY 2.2.1 XEU, then you will be able to update to Gingerbread via Kies.

But to be honest, when you realize just how easy Odin is, you wont want to use Kies.

Can you give me a link for the proper JPY firmware?

Thanks.

Re: 2.3.3 upgrade from FROYO.XXJPX

Samfirmware.com

You need to register an account.

You will find every firmware available there including JPY and all the gingerbread roms.

By all means flash JPY if you want to. But if you're going to go to the trouble then why not just flash a gingerbread ROM?
