One of the suggestions I made a few months ago, was the possibility of creating a Team of Firmware Testers.
Vodafone obviously take the Stock Firmware and apply their changes to it, but do they actually "USE" the Firmware in a way that a normal User would?
Do they actually Test the Firmware at all?
If we could Test Firmware prior to Public release, then at least we could pinpoint possible faults! It may delay Public release, but at least we would be able to offer an explanation as to why a Firmware was delayed and what was at fault and whether a Fix was being worked on!
Vodafone must pay out a huge amount of money applying their changes to Firmware. Surely it makes sense to Test it with a small group of Beta Testers first?
This applies across all handsets...

The best thing any carrier could do is just have the stock firmware on all of their smart phones then allow the users to download and install the Vodafone add ons i.e what they would lock in to their version of a manufacturers firmware. This way the end user will get all the updates when they are available.

The problem remains that Vodafone are pushing out Firmwares that are not fully Tested and have faults in them. Even if they roll out incremental updates, if they are not tested then the same scenario will exist.
There is a huge bank of willing Testers available on the eForum, it just seems crazy not to utilise a free resource, which would benefit all concerned!
All they have to do is send out a handset via the Device Loan Programme with the new Firmware installed and allow people a couple of weeks to fault find.
Remember the 2g feature that had been left out of a Vodafone firmware? That would never have happened if the Firmware had been Tested by people who actually Use the Handset!
2.2.1 Destroyed the HTC Magic, leaving it a useless brick! If the Update had been tested the lack of system resources would have shown up, saving the Company from a lot of Bad feeling!
Perhaps more senior Management should be encouraged to participate in the eForum, and get an insight into the real world issues facing customers.

Totally agree with you Soup but its VF were on about here and they usually stick to their guns. I flashed JVT (2.3.5) on my wife's branded handset a few weeks ago and the performance is brilliant. If VF just left the firmware untouched then that would be the best bet but we all know that VF like to add their "enhancements" like 2G not working lol

@ado
Your right mate! I agree, JVT 2.3.5 should be left Stock. As you say, we know Vodafone like to "Enhance" their Firmware.
But as many of the Devs have found on XDA, if you alter something however trivial, it can have a knock on effect to other parts of the Framework. So even including Branded Apps, or Trial games, if they are not located properly can cause serious issues!
It does beg the question, who do Vodafone use to alter the Firmwares? Whoever they are, they're not that good at it, are they...?!

Enhance !!!!! have you been on the drink again
If Vodafone use a third party that would explain why they don't do updates as they will charge Vodafone and no dout a shedload
it seems that we have a better update then the s2 crew have.
But thats a Vodafone rom and it has not gone well but they have not put any instructions up and a Factory wipe before is a essential
But this 2.3.5 is a sweet rom the best since 2.2.1 JPY
We need to no Is 2.3.3 the last For Vodafone Galaxy s customers ?
Some one at Vodafone knows the answer ??

We have asked VF several times to leave the firmware untouched but they refuse to do so and I doubt that they will ever listen to us. Custom roms are true "enhancements" but that's not for everyone. The average Joe public just want a phone that works well so its best to leave the firmware to the manufacturer. Vodafone clearly like to put their mark on the handsets which I can understand but I think that they would be better at investing their time and money developing their enhancements in the form of apps that the end user can download from Vodafones website or the Market etc. Vodafones latest app is actually good "My Vodafone" and I have it installed on my phone!

I agree ado28 but even the my vodafone app has problems, data use is out when its set the same as 3G watchdog the vodafone one is out and as it says takes 72 hours to update, and the data allowence shows the wrong bit, but other then that the idea is good.
As for them listerning when you have a company that is run by PR pen pushers who live in another world oh and are iphone users or blackbery then we don't stand a chance even there own people root and put custom roms on, so what does that tell you .
All the time this eforum has been running roms and updates are the main problem and no one from the department has come on to coment or even help they just leave it to the eforum team to take the flack, cos all we do is tell them to de brand mind you there happy after we have sorted them any how i did this on my phone and even typing is alot more responcive sorry about the spelling lol

My firmware is currently 2.1 - update1 lol and baseband is JM1.
I saw your guide soup (very good by the way) but i'm still waiting for my jig to arrive so that i can fix my 3 button combo so unfortunately can't follow it.
Think i'm going to head straight to root and CM7 when it is fixed anyway.

@sudburys
When you have Rooted, you will have ClockworkMod installed as well.
This will give you the ability to make a NanDroid Backup of your entire System, Apps, Media, infact everything!
It's like a Snapshot of your Phone, so if anything goes wrong you can go back to your original Firmware.
Before you put CyanogenMod7.1 or any other Rom onto your Phone always make a NanDroid backup and copy the folder to your PC.
It can save a lot of hassle.
After a NanDroid backup I always rename the file to something like CM7_#160 or Stock_JVT. Just so I know which backup is which.
