Calibrating Battery

I've read lots of conflicting info on the interwebs, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what the correct procedure is to properly calibrate the battery? I ask this as my battery life currently lasts for less than a day rather than 2 - 2 1/2 days.

Cheers

Re: Calibrating Battery

Charge the phone with it turned on then once charged turn phone off and connect charger again. Also if your not using apps etc then close them down using the stock task manager. Turn off 3G when not in use along with Bluetooth, GPS and Wifi. My phone can go for days without a charge by controlling whats running on the phone.

Re: Calibrating Battery

You may want to get yourself a new battery as it sounds like you've tried a lot of different things.

They're not that expensive.

These batteries can take a lot of abuse and you can charge them pretty much anyway you want.

ie. you don't need to charge them fully every time etc.

But the worst thing you can do to them as is the case for laptop batteries, is to have them connected to a charger for long periods of time when the battery is already full.

This will kill the battery.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Hi Matt, Also when you are finished using your phone after a call, text, using an app etc then go in to Task Manager, click on Ram Manager and touch "level 2" and clear memory. Once this has been done touch the BACK button and not the home key and this will take you back to your home page but with nothing running. Your phone will still be active in the respect it can still recieve calls, texts and allow the alarm etc to go off if set. By doing this you can make the battery last a long time. Also worth noting, I use a black wallpaper as this also saves on battery power and also turn your screen brightness down in your display setting! Hope this helps!

Re: Calibrating Battery

@VT
I only ever charge my phone when the battery is near empty (usually via my laptop rather than mains) and if things don't get better with the JPU firmware which I think I'll now try sooner rather than later, then I'll look into replacing the battery.

@Sean
I do that regularly at the moment, including last night. My battery had 36% left, I did the level 2 memory clear thing (wifi etc all off) and when I woke up my phone battery had completely drained.

Might see if VF will send me a new battery if the calibration doesn't improve things lol.

Re: Calibrating Battery

It sounds like its definitely the battery Matt

if not then some sort of hardware fault with the charger circuitry on board your phone, as you battery should not be depleting at that rate you described

Re: Calibrating Battery

I thought that may have been the case, VT. Looks like I'll be having another fun encounter with VF customer support early next week...

Cheers guys.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Seems no-one answered the question how to re-calibrate you phone. You'll need to root your phone, so before I proceed is your phone rooted?

Regarding the advice you've been given I disagree with most here I'm afraid. Regularly using task manager to clear running applications INCREASES battery drain, and I won't agree with the suggestion to replace the battery, it's far too early for your battery to have degraded to that point, unless it's dfective.

To start understanding your problem, please can you answer these questions.

What home launcher are you using?

Do you have any widgets if so what' the refresh interval of each one if they're pulling information from the internet

What's the update frequency of other contact accounts (such as facebook, twitter etc)

Do you use 3rd party chargers on your phone including car chargers

What other chat programs do you use or have installed or use apart from the default talk

The level of drain you have overnight (35%) points to rogue applications running amok, you shouldn't lose more than 2-3% overnight, so if we can address that in the first instance we'll be halfway there.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Hi FF

Yep my phone is rooted (z4root)

I only cleared running tasks at night / did the level 2 memory clear if my battery was <25%.

What home launcher are you using?
- The default one (touchwiz?)

Do you have any widgets if so what' the refresh interval of each one if they're pulling information from the internet
- Power Control
- Battery Widget
- 7 shortcuts
- photo wallpaper
So none which should access the internet

What's the update frequency of other contact accounts (such as facebook, twitter etc)
- Don't use tw@tter at all or any FB apps on my phone

Do you use 3rd party chargers on your phone including car chargers
- I occasionally once / twice a week use my car charger which is my old N97 micro usb charger. Other than that I use the Samsung provided mains / usb cable to charge phone.

What other chat programs do you use or have installed or use apart from the default talk
- None

Cheers

Re: Calibrating Battery

The reason why I suspect its the battery is because I know you've been struggling with it for some time with various different firmware and that you've had everything switched off with no apps running etc. and that youve already tried so many things on this forum over the last few weeks.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Blimey Matt, you phone does absolutely nowt compared to mine, you shouldn't be having  problem at all!!!

As a last resort re-calibrate your battery by following these steps

Fully charge up your battery

Drain completely again

Charge again until you get the battery full notification

Install a terminal application and from it run

"su" enter
 "rm /data/system/batterystats.bin" enter

Then re-boot. Last resort really.

FF

ps... one last thing have you reset the phone yet?

Re: Calibrating Battery

[ Edited ]

I used to use my phone more but I've had this issue for 3~ weeks and after I installed JP8 I though lets not install much to see if things improve.

Phones on 100% charge now so I'll recalibrate my phone now and report back over the next few days.

I installed JP8 on Sunday and did resets before and after the install.

edit - When the battery got to 100% and I unplugged it, it instantly dropped to 99% so something cannot be right.

edit2 - Recalibration done, phone rebooted, everything is turned off including brightness so elts see how it goes.

Thanks again

Re: Calibrating Battery

I used to have problems with the battery drain when I first got my phone. This is my set up and it works for me with the battery lasting for days at a time.

  • Launcher pro
  • Black blank wallpaper
  • Data network mode/ 3G only gets turned on when required then turned off again
  • Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS only run when required
  • No widgets running at all
  • I sync everything manually
  • Everytime I finish using the phone I close the programs with task manager level 2

Now by me doing all this it has given me 90+ hours of battery life. People may question Why do I have a smart phone then? Well I use what I need when I need it, its as simple as that. Whats the point in having an all singing and dancing phone doing all its magic when its buried in your pocket? The biggest drain from my experiments was Advanced Task Killer. As soon as I dumped this app the battery life improved instantly then improved even more by using the stock task manager.

These are just my personal ways to save battery power and it works a treat for me. Matt, if you follow this method as an experiment and your still having mega dattery drain then i would request a new battery.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Matt, If the problem started after a firmware update then it could be a calibration problem.

VT, that's extreme power management, but I guess it's not too different  from what I did when I had battery problems on my Magic, I ran it in 2G mode only and used opera mini for browsing until I re-calibrated the battery to release a massive boost of suppressed juice :smileyhappy:

Re: Calibrating Battery

You mean Sean, FF :smileywink:

I personally like to have loads of things running.
I charge my phone for a little first thing in the morning,
Then a little whenever I'm in the car
and a full charge when I get home in the evening.

If it was all about battery life for me, I would get a Nokia :smileywink:

Having said all that... currently, I've installed nothing on my phone since the flash the other day except LP, including facebook and twitter widgets.
Been using wifi tethering for 15 mins at a time here and there, made a few calls, email, bit of browsing, and the phone easily lasted all day until I got home yesterday when it was at about 30%.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Why did Mod BenJ (I assume it was you) mark this thread as solved when I didn't mention if my issue was solved? And you marked the wrong post as solved too...

After 24 hours, I've lost 22% of battery life so a big thanks to you, FrostFree, for the fix which can be found here.

Cheers!

Re: Calibrating Battery

Wow that's impressive Matt!!

Just out of interest, was your battery always that bad since you got the phone, or did it get progressively worse, or did it just get really bad immediately after a particular flash??

Re: Calibrating Battery

After about a week or two of using JPO firmware the battery got very bad almost over night.

My current setup is:

- Data connection always on (could improve battery life a lot here but meh lol)

- Wallpaper but no shortcuts or widgets

- around 8 apps installed including z4root

- I haven't used apps which connect to the itnernet other than the default web browser

- haven't touched the built in task manager

- wireless etc always off unless needed and brightness set to lowest

- light to medium usage

Going to give it another day or two before I start installing more apps so I can get a good idea of what the battery life is like without tons of cr@p installed.

Re: Calibrating Battery

Hi Matt,

Sorry for the confusion, I'm sure it's a mistake that that particular post has been marked.

If there's ever a post where you're not happy with what's been marked as the solution, you can always post back like you have here to continue the discussion. If you click "Post Options" next to the post marked as an answer, you should be able to undo the solution too and re-apply it where you like :smileyhappy:
