Now on with the flashing.
Firstly download this zipped file from one of the links found here:
http://www.multiupload.com/RV3OOVHU79
It will probably take a good half hour or so.
Then create a new folder on say your windows desktop and unzip the file into that folder.
You should then have 3 files:
1/odin
2/s1_odin_20100512.pit
3/Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000.tar
then double clink odin to launch it.
In the PIT field, select the pit file
In the PDA field, select the PDA file
Make sure the re-partition box is ticked.
Put the phone in 'download mode' and connect it upto to your PC.
Odin should then recognise it.
Press start in odin to begin the flash.
After its finished, allow the phone to fully boot up which can take some time the first time after a flash.

This is what I flashed yesterday using this guide, it was the first time I'd flashed any non standard rom or used anything other than Kies and it was far easier than I thought it would be. There are plenty of people on here willing to help with any queries you have as well. ![]()

So i notice form the full instructions that i may still experience the OS battery drain even with a custom rom, so what exactly is the point? Is it worth having to install all my appas and settings again for it possibly to be the same??

I'm not sure what you mean?
I've just read the instructions and the only mention of battery is an instruction to have it fully charged before flashing, else a re-calibration may be necessary. This is the case before flashing ANY rom be it froyo/gingerbread, stock/custom, using kies or odin.

Its in the issues section:-
.
Android OS bug
If your battery drains very fast and your battery stats mentions Android OS above 10%, often between 40 and 60%, sometimes more, this is the best to do as far as I know:
- Remove the 2/3 system files as per the beginning part of this guide about batterie issues.
- Install WatchDog and open (I set it to "moderate", then I close it, that's all), this app will warn you whenever an app or a process miss-behaves by draining the battery excessively. It will not fix it but just flag it and you will see a notification.
- Reboot usually stops the drain for a while until it naturally comes back, so reboot whenever you see Android OS above 10% and rising or after you see WatchDog mentioning "Suspend" process using too much battery (the suspend process hanging is the Android OS bug).
- Some apps trigger it, most common are Gameloft games (blame Samsung, not the games/apps).
No need to use apps or games for this drain to happen, it also happens straight after boot once phone has been fully charged. This bug can not be fixed by anyone but Samsung. Some never see it, some will experience it everyday no matters what they do... It's just annoying and unfair but that's the same on all Gingerbread releases by Samsung (JVK, JVB, JVO, JVH). Apparently even the SGS2 has this.

Whenever I have done a firmware update, from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 etc for a couple of days I had serious battery drain issues, though after a few days the battery life stabilised and steadily increased. On Darky 10.1 now and my battery was flat after 10 hours the first day, on the 3rd day now and battery was swapped (I have 2 to cover battery drain issues when I go out) last night @ 22:00, it's currently still on 71% despite making a few calls, going online and doing some texts, this is still better than I was getting previously.

oh right sorry, you're right.
But this only affects users who choose to install (and use) the 'Samsung apps'
Basically as posted earlier in the week its down two specific apps which are the cause:
Software update and samsung account.
I've been taking a look at a few phones over the last couple of days and I think I've narrowed it down and confirmed this.
Basically people who don't have or used/installed the Samsung apps after updating, don't have a battery drain issue.
People who do/have, do have this battery drain issue. Also it appears that people who have the worst battery drain are the gamers.
After flashing a new rom, you actually have to open and install the Samsung apps from fresh. People who haven't done this appear to be ok.
BTW My phone has just finally died after 36 hours with normal usage throughout this time.
You won't confirm any of this unless you decide to flash.
Either way I don't think waiting around for Samsung and an Kies update to come along is going to sort your problems out.
Basically Kies just updates your phone over the top of what is already on your phone.
I think you need to totally start from fresh to get rid of this bug.
By all means stay where you are with your firmware and maybe install watchdog to see what is draining it so much.
But for me the bother of spending a couple of hours backing up my info, flashing, than re-installing everything, is a lot better than spending weeks or months suffering in the unknown.

Interesting theory It would be great to see a side by side system comparison.

I think its got to be the case soup.
Lots of posts about it elswhere as well.
It would also explain why the ROM was passed by Vodafone testing who probably wouldn't have tested how Samsung 3rd party apps effect the operation of the ROM.
I think Gingerbread in itself is a far more stable and power efficient ROM than 2.2.1 is.

For my part, I did activate Samsung Apps. I did have the battery drain, with Android OS running at over 40%.
It would be interesting if people on Samsung Gingerbread could report if:-
1. They have or have not, installed Samsung Apps
2. They do or do not, have Battery Drain.
This would then support your theory! ![]()

The samsung apps is on my phone, but as far as i know i have not opened it until just and it had an update. My other halfs phone is the same and he hasn't used the Samsung apps either. We have both noticed that if we go to applications>manage applications>all and clear data from the samsung account and software update, we can get the os to go down to 4-6% but after a unspecified time it will come back. Hope this helps a little. Its driving me bonkers there are so many people saying its this that and the other and offer temporary fixes surely Samsung/Google need to get of their asses and sort it lol
I am a gamer on my phone but i was before gingerbread update and got better battery life than now.
I think we are going to flash my phone and then compare it with my other halfs and decide whether to do his.
Can i get it back if i don't like it? and is it best to factory reset first?

I am running Darky 10.1 which I believe to be a GB based rom. After flashing to Darky I did update the Samsung app and I have installed a couple of Sammy apps from there, though not games. Currently my battery is showing 63% left since being fuly charged last night at 22:00. Currently it is showing Android OS as using 5% of the battery, with most being used by Display and then Maps.

I updated to gingerbread yesterday and used 87% of my batter OVERNIGHT (with the phone idle)
Which is quite shocking to say the least.
Android OS=68% usage!!!!
I have now recharged and rebooted the phone to see if that helps. Android OS now down to 18%

This is not a task killer but more a task monitor which will alert you to which app or process is the culprit.
Then report back.
Keep an eye on the following:
Samsung account
&
Software update
Part of the problem is that its been reported else where that this issue come and goes at random which makes it very difficult to pin point with certainty. But I think its down to the samsung apps

TSD
If this is the case, then the Samsung App theory is not the answer
@Cyberwitch
Can I confirm what you are saying please.
1. You have had battery drain and Android OS issues for the last couple of days? Yes since the day after update, noticed android OS using 40-60%
2. You had not opened or installed Samsung Apps until today? Not that i recall and it did ask me to confirm the agreement, so maybe i had automatically installed it but not used it. I didn't have any samsung apps any way.

@Adam86 did you update via kies?
Yeah i did.
I first had to update to Froyo, and then to GB.
Kind of wish i had stayed on Froyo for a while, lol.
BTW after a full charge and a reboot, Android OS is now at 8%.
Also have installed watchdog to keep an eye on things.
