Galaxy S- New Vodafone froyo ROM JP8 firmware available!

Ok so whilst we were all away during the transition to the new forum, my phone started to give me trouble both with WIFI and 3G. This is something that I didn't have before but I was aware from the old forum that some people did have issues with WIFI and 3G when running the new froyo firmware. (its just that I can't find the posts anymore in this new jungle)
I'm not sure what triggers these problems in the firmware but in searching for solutions, I managed to find a new Vodafone froyo ROM kicking about!!
It is JP8 and has a newer build date than JP7 (which most of you are running at them moment)
From what I can make out it also has a newer 'modem file' which seems to sort out the WIFI/3G issues of JP7/JPO that many people have reported.
I personally have been running JP8 for about a week now and can report back that its a lot better.
JP7 Build date: 25/10/10
JP8 Build date: 10/11/10
Its definitely a better overall ROM, because the guys at XDA have started it using it (PDA+modem) in the most recent
versions of their 'custom' ROMS.
I haven't been able to find any evidence that it has been formally released by Vodafone yet, but it is
definitely a Vodafone ROM and intended for vodafone branded handsets with the product code GT-I9000HKAVOD.
to check what product code you have, enter *2767*4387264636# in your phones dialer
So if you have this product code, you should be able to get this via Kies if/when it becomes
available.
For those of you who don't have this product code or you don't want to wait for it to be released,
then here is a link to an xda thread where you will find flashing instructions and the download links.
Hope this post is useful and let us know how you get on if you decide to flash.
Thanks,
Vt

Everyone else will just have to wait for Vodafone to release this new firmware through Samsung, although it has been floating XDA for over a week now.

It sounds a lot better VT but I think I will hang fire as I'm not having any issues with my handset. Lots of custom roms available on XDA I could flash if needed :smileyhappy:

@ado28

The missing letters down the side of the contacts list have been like this since the JPM ROM.
The reason is that they added a search box at the top of the page.
So there is now not enough room for all the letters.
The letters that are missing and replaced by a dot are the ones with the fewest contacts in.
They had to do this otherwise all the letters would have been even smaller than they already are.

@Matt123

if you do flash to JP8. Make sure that your battery is at 100% when you do.
Its also always prudent to re-calibrate your phone to your battery after installing a new ROM.

Also, I have been reading in a few places of late that charging your battery using the usb cable attached to the computer every so often can help.
I don't know if this is true or not as I haven't tried it myself, but its worth a go.
From past memory, It certainly takes longer to charge using USB than the mains charger.

Re: Galaxy S- New Vodafone froyo ROM JP8 firmware available!

Hi VT,

Thanks for all that info in the first message - when I went looking for JP8 the other day I was looking in all the wrong places!

Anyway, did it this morning, now running JP8, just putting all my stuff on now, will have play around when all that is done.

Thanks again

Jim

Just took the plunge and the update went fine. Lets hope the wifi / 3g issues are solved and my battery stops draining much faster than before.

Off topic, the new emoticons look bloody awful...

Re: Galaxy S- New Vodafone froyo ROM JP8 firmware available!

So I was frustrated with the lack of info around the Web and decided to tweet Samfirmware earlier today about it. They were surprised as they hadn't heard about it and thanked me on twitter saying they would take a look at it.
I have just received private messages, saying that this has been decrypted and it is indeed a Vodafone ROM I9000BUJP8 intended for handsets with product code GT-I9000HKAVOD. (exactly as I said in my first post)
It is the most up to date froyo ROM and I think it likely it will go up on Samfirmware tomorrow

@matt
I can't say I was having battery issues with either JPO or this one.
So it could be your battery (unlikely) or something you're running in your phone which you might not even know about.
use *#*#4636#*#*
go into battery history
Have a look at what is caning the cpu usage and more importantly, the network usage.

I hope vodafone release this but i hope they don't put any bloatware on it, as i have no problems i'll hang on and see if Vodafone release it which if it is a Vodafone one then they will no doubt but i will get it off Samfirmware just in case  I got the last VF update the same day as every one else but i have just looked at my Phone id and it's GT-I9000HKDVOD i wonder what the difference is if any is

Re: Galaxy S- New Vodafone froyo ROM JP8 firmware available!

Vt, interesting news about the firmware situation, thanks for the update.

My phones only been turned on for around 2 hours and in that time nothing has been hammering the battery. I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure and make sure everything is turned off that doesn't need to be on, as I was getting 2+ days life out of it on JPO firmware.

Cheers!

@NDJ
Indeed. I shall try and find out if there is any difference.
But I do vaguely remember when the JP7 was released, it came to light that some people had one or the other codes and some people got it a day or two early.
In any case, if you look at the xda link in my first post, you can flash any csc you want with it, so anyone can use it on any network even though it is a vodafone ROM. Although Swype languages supported in this ROM are only European ones (No arabic, No Asian, No russian)
and looking at the established custom ROMS over at XDA which have been cooked up over the last few months, they're now using it, which has got say something about this ROM, no?
The reason is simply that its got the newest build date and the newest modem.
We all need to appreciate that the fact that the UK was the first and Vodafone was the first, to receive froyo officially may mean that subsequent versions will be better.
I've already said that this JP8 has sorted out my 3g/wifi issues I had with JPO/JP7
