Google Nexus One - Release Android 2.2.1

Hi Boffin,

As this is not a Vodafone release, it isn't something we can assist with, if any of our users have any ideas please post them here.

Of course I can :D

At the Android and warning triangle screen, hold the power button and press Vol+

Ps. You are correct, FRG33 isn't an official release, it was a leaked one. Not really of too much use, except for helping Voda handsets onto the Google releases.

Google Nexus One - Release Android 2.2.1

Updating from FRG33 to FRG83 has not altered my home screen which was cleared after the FRG33 update. All of my applications downloaded from the Market are also intact. So the upgrade from FRG33 to FRG83 was fairly painless after the help from Rusty.

As it should be, OTA updates preserve your data completely. I would be miffed if each update resulted in a wipe (like when I had my N95, cheers for that little gem Nokia )

Rusty, as a matter of interest, would it have been possible to go directly from VF FRF91 to FRG83 without going via FRG33? For that would be easier.

No unfortunately not, the Voda version of FRF91 is different to the Google FRF91, so there was a need for the intermediate Google FRG33 step.

Thanks Rusty, it was worth going via FRG33 to now get updates direct from Google.

So installing the FRG83 update myself should allow me to receive the next update OTA?

Out of interest what is the difference between the update.zip file and the passimg.zip file?

I think I shall follow the same path as boffin and philippos and install it myself.

Passimg.zip is a full system image... a blank, clean install.

Update.zip is a patch to the existing install.

Well done, it further confirms that moving from VF FRF91 to FRG83 can be done successfully as I have found. We are lucky FRG33 was released which provided the upgrade path to FRG83 from VF FRF91.

I was hoping to receive an ota to FRG83 from Google after moving to FRG33, but when it did not happen it left no option but to upgrade manually or risk being stuck on FRG33.

It remains to be seen if ota upgrades from Google will happen automatically after the move from VF FRF91 to FRG83, time will tell.

Ive never received an OTA update to be honest. I'm such an update ###### that as soon as one is released I download and do it manually. They do exist though people in this thread received them.

just to also say thanks to Rusty and David for their useful comments in this post.

I went the passimg.zip (FRG33) then onto update.zip(FRG83) path from VF FRF91

Given the updates are as simple as they are I can see why there is no need to wait for the OTA, assuming the file is released before the OTA.

My main problem was with being tied to VF updates that were being delayed, the reason I bought the phone was for the updates and was told by VF I would receive them direct from Google as many others were. No longer an issue

Is there any news on the release date for gingerbread or is it still some time before 2011?

Google Nexus One - Release Android 2.2.1

Hi, I have downloaded the relevant file and renamed it update. Zip but I can't get past the installation point. Does my phone have to be rooted or should this work on a standard vodafone issue phone?
Many thanks

Well, it will only work if you've done the phone wiping passimg.zip bit first, which I am guessing you haven't?

See message number 83 in this thread for details of how to install FRG33 which you need to do before FRG83. Installing FRG33 will erase your Market downloads, but they can be re-loaded.

You do not need to root your phone to do these updates.
