[Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

I went through few posts on XDA about calibrating the battery stats. According to those post need to delete the batterystats.bin file located at /data/system/ folder but couldn’t locate the fodler on my device.

To calibrate batter do I need to root my phone and Does it really helps to improve the batter life?

One more method that I found is...

1. Run the device down until it turns itself off.
2. Turn it back on and wait for it to turn itself off again.
3. Remove the battery for 10 seconds.
4. Replace the battery, but leave the device off.
5. Charge the device until full and then for another hour.
6. Boot into recovery and reset battery stats (or, go to console and type “su” enter, followed by “rm /data/system/batterystats.bin”)
7. Run the device’s battery down until it turns itself off.
8. Charge to full while off.
9. Restart and use as normal.

Don't know how to do it without rooting phone???  Is there any other better way to [Re] Calibrate battery??

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

Root the phone. If it takes you any longer than 15 seconds to root the phone then you are doing something wrong!

Remember rooting will void your warranty so bare that in mind if you wanna root!

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

You want to wipe batt. stats?

Root. Install clockworkmod recovery. Wipe battery stats is one of the advanced options in CWM.

CMW is a great thing for the phone. I dont see the point in not having it. I just wish ROM Manager had more options for the Galaxy S.

Question ???

Why do you need to do this ??

Are you have problems with your battery charging or major drain ???

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

Thanks a lot Ado & Jim.

Actually my not that confident about rooting the phone and worried I might have problem with next update too.

I might give it a go after having GB on my phone.. Hopefully somewhere early next month...:smileytongue:

Ado I'm still not able to see your post about flashing guids ....Can you please put an link for me here??

NDJ

I'm currently on JPY (XEU) and pretty much happy with the performance n all but only battery last for 12/14 hrs with minimal usage so Just thought lets try to recalibrate the battery that might help me with this.

Always appreciate your quick response to any post... keep it up.. cheers.

Switch your phone to 2G only and see what your battery life is like over the next 24 hours.

to do this, go to settings>wireless and network>mobile networks>network mode>GSM only

You will still be able to sync all your accounts, send/receive email, use location services etc.

Its just that web browsing will be slow.

If after 24 hours you notice a considerable battery life improvement, you have identified the problem.

ie. 3G battery life on the JPY modem is absolutely horendous, even when the phone is just in standby.

give it a try.

[ Edited ]

www.youtube.com/puggereduk is the place to visit for his excellent videos.

Rooting is very easy to do, and has many benifits. Also if you are rooted it does not affect an upgrade as the upgrade will wipe it clean. All rooting does is give you access to files otherwise blocked by the manufacturer. As long as you dont go mad deleting things all over the place you will be fine.

Edit: Vodafone and Samsung frown on rooting for some reason so it invalidates warranty blah blah blah yawn blah. But it just takes a flash to unroot.

JPY is a battery drainer indeed, I flashed JPG and that seemed better for some reason. I'm now on JQ1 which is the modem used in Gingerloaf so will comment on its performance over the next week. I'm running a new kernel too [Dark Voodo] however a couple of features i.e call recording and moving apps to the sd card are not working. I can move apps with app 2 sd card from the market so not all is lost.

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

You said before I believe that you were on JPY with an XEU handset so yes you will get the kies updates as normal. You do not need to unroot before upgrading, is it possible that you have mistaken that for lag fixes? Now the lag fixes you do have to remove before upgrades or else you will run into problems, but root, it just disappears when you update, then you have to root again. :smileywink:

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

First thing - did you try VT's suggestion above, that is a very good method of saving battery.

Second thing - rooting means invalidating warranty with both voda and sammy, ok you can reverse it but if something goes wrong with your phone at any time and you take it for repair, and you either cant take off the root (if its bricked) or have forgotten to take it off, then they could refuse to fix or charge to fix. Best keep this in mind before doing anything, you have to be sure that you want to do this before doing it.

Best place for info is at xda-developers, easiest method is CF Root.

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

I rooted my phone successfully with CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1

Now I can see super user in my app drawer.

I have even installed ROM Manager from Marked (obviously free version) :smileyhappy:

But on rebooting phone in recovery mode I can't see "Advance" option to wipe the battery stats.

Is it only available with Paid version??? or am I doing something wrong??

Plzzz help...

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

In Rom Manager did you press Flash ClochworkMod Recovery? (should have current recovery ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2)

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

Could you go to your file manager, look at sd card, and see if there is a file called update.zip there - that will be clockworkmod recovery. Just so we know that it is there.

(hah, just ran into problem, tried reboot to recovery from rom manager to replicate and now have a phone doing nothing - I guess its the funny kernel that I am on just now. Ho hum.)

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

Oopsss.. Sorry mate...

Yes I could see the update.zip file present on my SD card.

I tried to reboot it in recovery mode again from Rom Manager option but still getting only three options.

Reboot
Wipe factory rest
Wipe ????? somthing i don't remember..

Sorry off subject query -- was wondering if I flash darky or any other custom rom then will I get future update as normal through kies??
Do I need to do a factory reset before flashing them??
What you think about Kitchen Roms?

Re: [Help] How to [Re]calibrate (wipe) Battery stats

Ah, thinking about it you are using stock kernel, there probably  no advanced option on the sammy kernel, if you flash another kernel you will get options - speedmod is always a good one to get started on.
