Newbie wanting to upgrade system

Hi All,
Can someone shove me in the right direction of a thread to explain what I need to do/download to flash etc onto the latest software / OS for my phone?
I'm used to messing with my old BBerry Storm so not afraid of unofficial software etc but Android seems a much, much more complicated bag and I want to make sure I know what I'm doing.
My phone's currently on official everything, firmware 2.2, build FROYO.BUJP7
Cheers all

Yep, all aware of that, don't really mind playing with it as Android appears fairly easy to rescue if it all goes wrong.
The Storm was the same warranty wise, but then smashing it repeatedly with a brick also invalidated the warranty (although it did provide a far more satisfying user experience...)

What is it your looking for the latest firmware that samsung are doing is 2.2.1 but Vodafone are not putting it on there devices, not going into why. Gingerbread is due out soon so if it is for that you need to hang on,this does not void your samsung warrenty as it is there firmware yes it does void your Vodafone warrenty , But if you want to go down the custom rom route this does void all warrentise only if they can tell. The best rom would be Darkiys rom. But as at the moment i stick with non branded roms i will leave that to the Flashing boys But word of warning you can brick your phone so listern to what we tell you. If it was me i would go down the 2.2.1 route first as that changed my phone made it as samsung intended it to be.

LOL I like your style Ronin, bricks are good!
The Galaxy is pretty much brick proof so all's good on that front. The first thing you need to do is make sure that your 3 button combo works. This gets you into recovery and download mode. To activate the combo press Vol up + Home + power all at the same time. This gets you into recovery. Vol down _ home + power puts the phone into download mode. If this doesn't work then don't flash unless you have a Jig I would advise buying a jig anyway just in case and they are less than a fiver delivered ![]()
Providing all is well above you need to know what firmware you want to try. JPY which is froyo 2.2.1 is the latest samsung firmware out and can be downloaded here To flash firmware you need to use a tool called Odin which you can get here. You will also need to root your phone if you want to improve it further. Rooting is simple and you use Odin again to flash the file.
Personally for me I like to use custom Roms and there are loads about. You can visit the kitchen and basically cook your own Rom and choose which kernels to have on it etc! I am currently running darky's 9.3 Rom and it is blazing fast.

Northern DJ - I just want the phone to operate smoothly without any freezing between functions, get a battery life that lasts more than 8 hours, just general improved functionality. I'm not that bothered about apps but I have problems with yahoo mail and google maps (I use it as a nav quite a bit). It sounds like waiting for gingerbread maybe the right thing to do but it's interesting to read about other things that can be done with the phone.

ado28 - Even in it's current "standard" form the Galaxy is a million times better than the Storm was.
I'll have a look through what you've posted but have a look to see my reply above to Northern DJ - would I be wasting time in going into the real indepth stuff when gingerbread might sort it?

Hi Robin,
Put Gingerbread to the back burner mate. There is no official release date for it however there is a beta version out which is riddled with bugs. I would suggest rooting the phone then flashing over to darkys 9.3 Rom if you want speed and battery performance. I'm running Darky 9.3 Rom and can only give nothing but praise for it. It's the best rom I have ever been on and it does have some Gingerbread features on it however I deleted them as I didn't like them lol

Robin, lets first get you n stock firmware!
Perform a factory data reset on your fone first. You will loose all data. Format the internal sd card too if you like (recommended) because were gonna totally start from a fresh
1. Go to samfirmware (register)
2. In the firmware section click on Android then pick your phone (Galaxy S)
3. Download JPY
4. Once downloaded unzip the rar file with either Winrar or 7 zip
5. In the PDA field put the JPY_JPY.tar file in there
6. Put your phone in to download mode then connect to PC
7. The com port in Odin will now turn yellow. Click start and this will flash the firmware
8. Once flashed your phone will reboot (can take up to 10 mins to restart - NORMAL)
9. After restart type in (on your phone) *#272*YOUR IMEI# and change your product code to XEU
10. Your fone will reboot
11. Perform another factory data reset just for good measure
Now you will be on Samsung stock firmware Froyo 2.2.1!
Next to Root!
1. Download cf-root from here and select (CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip)
2. Unzip file
3. Place the file in the PDA field of Odin
4. Put phone in to download mode - connect to pc and flash
Now your rooted!
If you want to go down the custom rom road then you will need to download Clockwork recoveryMod from the Market. Will explain this once you reach this stage!
Happy flashing, If you have any problems then were here to assist ya ![]()

Robinh, I dont know if gingerbread will really bring any extra goodies to what 2.2.1 offers, get yourself on to that for a start and see how it feels.
I also dabble in the custom roms, there is a lot to choose from. As far as the 2.3 stuff, I just wait for the cyanogen people to do their stuff, never seen a cyanogen rom but everything I read is good about them.
SGS I9000
Rom : CyanogenMod 9 nightlies

if it doesn't work then DONT FLASH as you could semi brick your fone!
Keep finger on vol up then also press the home key then finally press and hold the power button so that all 3 keys are pressed in. Release the keys when the white Galaxy writing appears. try again mate ![]()

Been there and bricked it, It is a must to sort this first a jig might still not work as the download program is not there there is a fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=7
I did the above fix but only on phones that are not bricked and were on orange. If the phone gets bricked and no three button then it has to go to samsung to sort, yes you can get a jig but that only works if after you have the three button on first and then it bricks

I've had it a while now, back in August/September time I think. I think it was one of the first ones as I'd had a blazing row with vodafone about my Storm and they talked me into staying with a Galaxy S.
So it sounds like I def need a jig?
Cheers for your help so far guys.
