Be good to be able to unroot after the update and restore too. = handset in warranty.
Hi Dizzle,
With all due respect there is no point in backing up apps and data simply to reinstall after a firmware upgrade. This in its self is most likely to cause FC and probably have effects on other system apps. If your unsure about the rooting process then I would personally either stay away or research in more depth about the processes involved with rooting and flashing firmware. Anyone can in effect root their phone but if it goes belly up then will you have the ability to recover the phone from a bricking should a flash go wrong?
I don't wish to sound negative on the subject, I'm only trying to offer you some good advice ![]()

Yea I can appreciate that. I've technically no problem rooting and flashing but I would like to stay under warranty.
As it happened I bit the bullet and just updated; 2.2.1 updated from 2.2 using kies keeping all the settings and data. I'm likely to use odin and titianum backup before moving to gingerbread though.

Point is, moving system data within one platform, e.g. froyo, is fine, moving data gained on froyo to gingerbread could give you problems.

Jims spot on here and if you back up all your system data when on froyo to transfer to Gingerbread then thats when the problems will begin. For starters (to my knowledge) Touch wiz is different on Gingerbread and there will be other tweeks on other system components so theres no point in transferring your old settings on to a new platform.

I have just Flashed back to JPY, mainly to help some friends with their problems.
So I thought lets give this SuperOneClick v1.7 a go. This is a program that enables you to Root and UnRoot without having to re-flash a Rom.
See it HERE
Get it HERE
The download is a .Zip file so use winzip, 7zip or winrar to extract it to a folder.
Double click on the SuperOneClick.exe, this runs the software.
Now put your phone into USB Debugging Mode. (settings-applications-developement).
In the software window click ROOT then connect your phone.
When the scrolling messages stop it will ask if you want to test su. Just click yes or no.
You are now Rooted.
The beauty is you can unroot without having to reflash.

Hi soup, I was puzzled by your superoneclick fail post as i have rooted that way before, but that was with version 1.5 and it had to be when I was on 2.1 or the early unofficial 2.2.
So, I flashed back to stock, did the same as you, tried the 1.7 version and got the same result - NO ROOT. Good old CF Root saves the day, applied clockworkmod, flashed speedmod kernel as I have never used it on stock, might stay here for a day or so before next flash.

AAAArrgh, dont know what has happened but titanium backup has failed on me! I made a back up just before flashing, but none of the apps I had in it are there!
Too late now to mess about with it but I have a nandroid backup I made the other week, it will have to do, will try that in the morning.

Sean, baseband = modem, right? If so then I9000XXJPY. Still on stock at the moment, when I get some spare time this morning there is a titanium wiki that I am going to have a look at, see if I did anything wrong there.
