Samsung GS3 Mini - new notification icon

allachie9
4: Newbie

I'm pretty new to all this, so sorry if I'm asking something that's basic and obvious.

On my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini I'm getting a new icon in the notification area when a message is received (I should add that I only get a couple of messages now and then !).

The icon looks like a 'speech bubble' with quotation marks in it.

Is this something new, or something I've done ?

I've never noticed it before today. Thanks.

You're Welcome. 😎

If you look at my included link in my first reply you'll see that's the Hangouts icon.

Hi

Is it possible to take a screen grab of your phone screen and add it as an attachment as this may help identification..

Is it this - see attachment.

Thanks again, I've just read the article your link took me to, and now I've got it.

But . . do I need it ?

Can I opt out ?

I'll investigate further, thanks again for your help.

It's an app you can use or not.

From the second link.

Sign out of Hangouts
On your Android device, open the Hangouts app .
Touch your profile photo.
Touch Settings.
Touch your Google Account.
Scroll to the bottom and touch Sign out.
Tip: If you don't want to receive notifications, turn off your notifications.

Brilliant - thank you again.

Well this is weird !

I've started to read about 'hangouts' and am becoming ever more confused.

At the age of 70 I don't need vodafone, google or anyone else to confuse me, I can manage that quite well on my own !

As I don't have a gmail, google+ or any other account with which to start the hangouts service, I can't find a way of stopping it.

All I have on this phone is an old AOL email account, which is the only email account I have ever had and ever used.

Can anyone offer any advice please ?

Probably more by good luck than good judgement, I have sorted this out, but still don't know how it started.

I found 'hangout' settings and from there unticked SMS and notifications and proper order has been restored.:smileywink:

If your phone is signed into Google (which you'll have been prompted to very prominently when you set it up), you have a Google account and that includes Gmail, Google+ etc.  It sounds as though you somehow managed to set Hangouts as your message client at some point.  It's not a default and I've never bumped into it myself.   Glad you're sorted, though.
