Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Thought I'd set up a general discussion thread for those whom have purchased the Galaxy Nexus, & those whom are looking to purchase the phone in the future. General discussion about your experiences, technical queries & suggestions are all welcome.

Please refrain from posting anything related to when Vodafone will release the phone - There are other threads devoted to this topic, & in all honesty I'm sick & tired of hearing the same questions/comments over & over again.

Fire away people... :smileyhappy:

Bit expensive imo but they're starting to appear now.

Interested to see the docking station and the car dock when they're available.

I think I read they're due to be released tomorrow

I like the Case-Mate cases, but it would be nice to see one in the flesh before splashing out ~£25.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Received my Galaxy Nexus from Phones4U last night. So far it is everything that the reviews have promised. Big but not bulky and looks vey good.  Android 4 is slick, quick and everything looks sharp on the big screen. Face unlock is a bit of a novelty but very hit and miss as to when it works but there are the PIN or pattern options as a back up. For all of the gripes about the camera only being 5MP I have been very impressed with the images I have taken which look at least as sharp as those taken on my wife's S2. I have only had one experience of the volume bug as I have mostly been in areas with good 3G coverage so far. Hopefully it is a software issue and an update will be released soon. All in all very happy with the phone and I'll post a more in depth analysis once I've had a chance to use all of the features.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Good call on this thread.

My short 1-day of ownership review taken from the other thread :

It's an amazing phone really,

everyone is focused on this problem and not giving any feedback on the phone itself!

Screen is awesome, the on screen buttons look like real buttons sometimes, the screen it really light and crisp, the touch response is excellent, I can actually type fast on this one, if anything the keyboard is slightly too big, because I find it a stretch to reach the space bar, but I think that's because I'm used to the G1 so much.

The browser is impressively quick, loads pages almost as fast as my PC.

The face onlock feature is cool if you're in to gadgets. Perfect for somebody who uses the phone without a pin or unlock pattern normally, but not the most secure thing if security is important to you.

Umm.. you can organise your home screens with folders now. I used to use a seperate home screen for things like social networking, work, car applications, music, etc. Now it's all on the first page in cool looking folders that pop out with all the select apps in - I like that.

If you're playing music and turn the screen off/back on there's media controls there, which is good as I was using this feature of Cyanogenmod7 on my N1 and was going to miss that.

You can take screenshots (Ok, the 1 thing iPhones could do that we couldn't, not anymore :smileyhappy:) which again I was doing in CM7 and was going to miss.

notifications are better, relaying the first part of emails as well as messages.

It looks like the battery is going to make it to 24 hours use without a recharge, just a couple more hours to go.

I was giving it a caining most of the afternoon / evening - infact I couldn't leave the thing alone.

I didn't charge it over night and still has about 25% battery on it.

Pictures aren't brilliant but the shutterspeed is impressively fast.

I haven't taken a video yet

You know what I am missing though... the trackball.

It's not as easy to scroll to different imput fields while filling in forms or usernames/passwords. Plus if you want to correct a letter, you have to keep pressing until the cursor is in the right place.

I know most new phones don't have this anymore. As far as I'm aware when android first come about, one of the specifications of the phones were that they had to have some sort of navigation control. This seemed to get scrapped after 18months 2years of android being around.

Shame, really.

However, must say the dictionary is much better. It predicts words better and allows me to save things like web addresses and my email address in the dictionary, which I couldn't before (or I just didn't investigate enough if I could)

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Strangely I've rarely used the trackball on my Nexus One - It's as clean & fluid as the day I purchased the phone. It's probably due to not realising what it can be used for.

Siquo - Have you purchased one of those cheap gel cases from eBay/Amazon? I'm thinking of purchasing one, along with a MOCKS sock to keep the phone protected until those Case Mate cases are released.
I'd prefer to put my Nexus in a neoprene case like what was supplied with the Nexus One - Shame the Galaxy Nexus didn't come with one :smileysad:

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Saying that I literally just ordered one of those cheap cases from ebay along with some screen protectors

Anything will do for now, I think I'll go for a sock to be honest because with my nexus one I had to keep taking it out the case to put it in my car dock, and in the end I just stopped putting it back in it's case.

I will probably end up doing this with the GN, but for a couple of quid I'm not going to lose sleep over it

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm going for a £1.85 (delivered) rear gel case in black, & combining this with the MOCKS sock (item number: 190595749519). Can't really complain @ £5.84 delivered for both.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It'll be big enough - I compared the dimensions of the sock to the dimensions of the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus comes in at 135.5 x 67.9mm, & the sock sizes in at 135x70mm (stretching to 150x100mm if required).

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Update:

Second charge now over 20 hours without being on battery warning, been installing loads of apps and generally playing with the phone.

GPS, WIFI, BLUETOOTH have all been left on the whole time. Been playing music for a short time through bluetooth in the car.

Has anyone tried maps yet? The GPS has been getting my very accurate location in about 3 seconds, and direction you're facing is very accurate, turning as you do.

Nice.

Oh, and I've seen the SAV ghost just twice in the last 24 hours

I find it hard to believe that GPS, Wi Fi and Bluetooth have been constantly on together for 20hrs without the battery running on - I'm afraid that this is something that I'll have to see with my own eyes to believe, as GPS is generally rather battery power intensive. On a side note, my gel cover was dispatched today, even though they claim to despatch all orders the same day if the order is placed prior to 3pm. I've decided to wait for your review on the MOCKS sock - These are posted via second class, so you probably won't receive it until Monday or Tuesday.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

While having GPS, BT and WIFI on, doesn't mean they will be 100% active all the time. The SW can manage that quite easily.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Yea, Doesn't mean I've been running navigation for 20+ hours.

I mean they're all switched on, which does have more battery drain.

Running something like navigation or glimpse, would be lucky to last 5 hours in previous experience.

I have a wildfire that I use to track my drivers at work, running glympse it lasts over 4 hours which is all I need.

My sony ericsson x10 mini only lasts 3 hours

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My N1's battery would probably lose the will to live if I left GPS, Wi Fi & Bluetooth on all day - I guess that ICS more sufficiently manages processes/battery life.

Not at all, I leave all of that on my nexus one too. (I wont turn GPS off because I would rather sacrafice battery life and be able to track the phone should I lose it - I only ever turn wireless off if I'm going far away from home and don't need it, and bluetooth stays on all the time because I stream music to my car as I jump in/out)

Sometimes lasts 24 hours but mostly dies during the night if I forget to charge it.

Must be something wrong with your nexus one!

Bearing in mind my N1 has been better since I installed CM7 on it and CPU monitor to underclock the processor when the screen is switched off

The wildfire will last 4/5 days with wirelss and gps switched on if I don't use it

Not sure if you have yet - but maybe try some of the power management tools if they have been ported ok to ICS?

I have Power Manager which turns on bluetooth and wifi when on external power - works in the car for bluetooth headset and @ home for connecting to home network and also only turn on Sync when connected to external power.

I have also have used Locale to turn on and off various options - i.e. WIFI when at home and work or make it silent during the night.

Dont use this at the moment but was fairly pleased with it a while ago.

Also run Juice Defender and it seems to make a difference to my HTC power consumption - again not sure if its been ported to ICS.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I use android booster on the nexus, don't know if it helps some say they actually use more battery power..

I don't want wireless and bluetooth to turn off when it's not plugged in as that's when I use them.

Sure it's very handy if that's what you want it to do

I have wifi and GPS on all day on my HTC desire and it makes it through the day ok. Of course, if I kick the hell out of the internet connection, it wont. :smileyhappy:

Wi Fi alone doesn't significantly drain my battery, but GPS and Bluetooth generally do. Maybe I'm noticing it more when my phone is connected to my handsfree kit whilst also using navigation. Tomorrow I will wake up and turn all three on to see if the N1 can indeed cope. I won't use GPS, I'll certainly use Wi Fi whilst at home, and I may use the bluetooth whilst driving - A typical weekend's use.
