OK, just gave this a try on the car park using maps. Both the Hero and Nexus acquired a lock from GPS being off in seconds. The Hero did lock maybe two seconds quicker, but the nexus registered more satellites quicker on GPS Status app. The compass on Nexus S seemed far more steady. Fantastic stuff, kaytronika: thanks for getting onto this so soon, too. All the more glad to hear that a quick test has yielded positive results, as I just placed my order for a new handset, to be delivered tomorrow 
I appreciate the GPS Status info, too. Any icing on the information cake is more than welcome..
I think most of my questions have been answered by now, but I'll keep this thread open for the time being, as there may be developments once I've actually started using the phone. Let's see how long I can bear to wait on stock ROMs..
