Please help,
Tonight Kies kindly informed me there was a firmware upgrade for my Galaxy S which I believe was running 2.3.3 or maybe 2.3.4?
Anyway I set the update off running but at some point during the process Kies crashed (no suprise) and left me with the big triangle and the "do not turn off target" warning.
After a while it became obvious nothing was happening so I switched the phone off. Now I get the phone & computer icon with a warning triangle in middle.
I've scoured the internet and tried to find a fix to no avail, it all seems a tad complicated. I've downloaded Odin and tried flashing with a .tar file but it fails.
Can anybody give me a working link to some files I can use to repair the phone and then some easy to follow instructions on how to use odin with these files. I'm desperate as all my contacts are stored on the phone and not the sim. I have a backup in KIES from around 3 days ago so things are not mission critical but knowing the technical knowledge of the staff in my local Vodafone shop they will simply send the phone away which not only deprives me of my phone but it'll come back wiped.
Solved! See solution

first thing to do is take the battery out for 30 seconds and then put back in.
Press Volume Up + Home + Power. When the Galaxy S logo appears let go.
You should now be in the recovery menu.
Use Volume up/down to highlight Restart, Press Home to select.
Does the phone start up?
If not then come back and we will talk you through flashing the Firmware.

I take it that is the screen
As soup said you need top get the phone into download mode
Now if your looky its a soft brick
and recovery mode is there
If doint the button presses does not work
take out sd and sim and battery leave 30 seconds
Put battery back in
Press and hold v+ and v- at the same time then plug in your usb cable which needs to be in the PC first
If not you need a USB jig off ebay about £4.00
Then you can use Odin to reflash the firmware

You could have warned me you were going to show that picture, I'll be having nightmares about seeing that again.
Well I've progressed, managed to find some instructions and a complete set of files. All back working now using ODIN and I'm on 2.3.3 again.
However kies no longer recognises my phone as an official product and the previous upgrade that crashed is no longer available. Is there any easy way of returning it back to a non rooted version?
Or.....would you support the notion of flashing 2.3.6 from one of the other forums available?
And thanks for replying so quick, it's nice to know people are here to help.

To get Kies working again you will need to flash the official Vodafone Firmware, VOD.
Galaxy S GT-I9000 I9000BUJVG_I9000GVODJV5_VOD Gingerbread 2.3.6
Single File Flash
No pit file
do not tick re-partition
This is the latest firmware and is recognised by Kies!

Can't thank you enough for the help. I downloaded the file as above & using odin was able to flash the phone back to a working one. Afterwards kies wouldn't recognise phone but neither would windows explorer so I did as suggested & did a factory reset which wasn't ideal owing to loss of messages, calendar entries etc. however I've got all apps installed & data restored. Nice to have a clear out now & again. Even swype feels better.
So all in all what started as a disaster had turned out fine.
Again many thanks

Kies decided to brick mine too, after trying to install the latest firmware. Tried everything that you guys have suggested, but no matter what I do that phone to PC warning icon just comes up.
Looks like I'll be claiming this on my phone insurance.

It can be sorted if the phone will go into down load mode
turn off the phone pull the battery and wait 30 secounds
put battery back in press and hold the volume+ and centre home button then press power wait for the Galacy I9000 to show then let go
If you get a green android showing let us no
all you need to do is follow the debranding thread but any samsung service centre can fix this no there and then as long as you can get into the download mode if not you only need to leave with them for 24v hour
or if you live in Yorkshire let me no

Got it sorted. Got it into download mode, opened up Odin, stuck 2.3.3 on it then plugged it back into Kies. Now running 2.3.6.
