Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

We had to wait two months for Vodafone to release FROYO for the Nexus One... It's now over two months since GINGERBREAD was released.

Vodafone are continually telling-us that this delay is to give us a 'better experience' - how can a longer wait be better ?

I would appreciate some 'Vodafone feedback' on this......

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

Hi dweaver1,

froyo for the nexus one was released about 2 weeks after google released it,  no two months.

In terms of gingerbread many people on here have been given various different answers from different sources within Vodafone.

I was told that Vodafone were working on it however there had been some delays, rjchaplin on the other hand was told that Vodafone had yet to recieve the update from google. Both these stories came from the CEO's office who should have know what was going on.
http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Google-Nexus/Poxy-Vodafone-and-GIngerbread/td-p/709871/page/2

At the end of the day if you want the Vodafone flavoured version of Gingerbread it's just a case of waiting, potentially a while.
The guys on here will release the details as soon as they know.

If you desperatly want Gingerbread there is a very easy and simple way of getting it onto your Nexus One. Look for RustyU's post in here, it's the one with the big red text you need to follow!

Thanks for the info.

My records show FROYO 'Google release' was 20/05/2010 – 'Vodafone release' (on my phone) was 20/07/2010 - hence my two months post....

Direct link to Rusty's post : here

Hope this helps.

I would point out that the recent update to 2.3.4 has massively improved my battery life. On 2.3.3 I was struggling to reach the end of the day after an overnight charge.

I must second this, before i updated i struggled to get 8 hours(moderate-heavy) on a single charge and hence was having to charge overnight and again when i got home from work.
Now i am getting nearly 20 hours(moderate-heavy use) so only need to charge overnight.
I also though i would experiment a little and decided to leave all wireless connections on (wifi bluetooth 3G) and i still got aobut 14hours!

According to this article on the BBC News website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13422308 - anything before 2.3.4 "leaks data".

I am on 2.2.1 with no sign of an update - is it safe to assume that updates will now be issued as a matter of urgency?

This issue is caused by the fact that the tokens are not being encrypted before transmission.

You are only at risk of being affected by this if you use an unencrypted internet connection and this would only occur if you are using a public wifi hotspot.

This is a minor issue and wouldn't gauruntee any kind of update.

Also most phones that are being updates are getting updated to 2.3.3 which is still affected, so an update wouldn't fix the issue.

There is an issue in android 2.1 with SMS handling, this issue was fixed by Google in 2.2 but took networks months to get round to updating handsets, in fact you will still find several handsets on 2.1

Best advice here, don't use public WiFi.

Sorry - my 'two months' post was an overestimate....

I have now found the 'May date' (I quoted) was only a 'limited release' & full rollout was in-fact in June - this makes the comparison with the current delay even-worse....

VODAFONE - why are we waiting longer for Gingerbread than Froyo on the Nexus One ?

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

dwaever, in all honesty the dates shouldnn't matter, Vodafone should have released the update some time ago!

I decided to go the manual route and quite glad i did now to be honest, it's like i have a new phone. lol. Okay so Vodafone won't cover my warranty but i should still be covered by HTC.

If you despeartly need gingerbread then update manually, you won't regret it!

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

I'm impressed about what you guys say about the improvement in battery life. That and the still outstanding touchscreen issues have nearly made me ditch this phone. But I might hold out a little longer.

I refuse to manually upgrade on principle!! :smileyhappy:

I was the same until I realised that the only person I was affecting by my principles was myself.

Went to stock firmware some time ago and have not regretted it for a moment.

The main thing holding me back was prinples and the boss(he pays the bill)

Convinced the boss of the benefits so he was fine with me updating and priciples went out the windows when i heard of the massive improvements 2.3.4 made!

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

QUESTION - This delay caused by 'Vodafone interference' is pathetic - if I do the 'manual upgrade' will I have to re-install apps. ?

Thankyou - that's what I suspected...

I've had the phone nearly a year - so have 'a lot' of configration-data (apps & OS). I just checked & I do have 'backup my data' & 'automatic restore' set on the phone - will these help aleviate the pain of re-installation ?

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

The apps will need to be re-installed, but this will automatically happen when you sign into your Google account on the phone after you've flashed it (market apps only). This is what's covered by the 'backup data' and 'automatic restore' options that you mention. It may take a little while before everything is restored. The same applies to any Google contacts, calendars, etc. (note: anything stored directly on the phone will be lost).

Settings within individual applications are not restored, unless the app has it's own backup and restore feature that you can use.

Data on the SD card isn't touched.

Some apps store their config on your SD card so assuming you don't wipe your card that would be restored, I couldn't tell what appss do and don't though.

I find it useful to occasionally start from scratch, there were a lot of app i had on my phone before that i just didn't use, now they are not there i have a lot more space on my phone for appas that i do use

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

If you get Titanium Backup, you can root the phone and use it to backup everything.

Then you can install Google's ROM and restore all your crap. It will be like it was before :smileyhappy:

Re: Where is Gingerbread ? (VF version)

RustyU - thankyou - just installed the app. It will only work once I have 'rooted' the ROM......

Can I 'root' & then backup ?
