Wi-Fi connection problem

Hi

Now that I am on JPY I can't connect to my home wi-fi.  I have tried a factory reset on the phone, 3 button reset and some codes that VT posted previously to test wi-fi connection.  Nothing seems to be working at all.  It is finding the network and allows me to input the password then it just gets stuck on 'Obtaining IP address'.  Any ideas?

I think Ndj had this same problem and he pinned it down to his router. Can you flash back to say JPO to see if the problem goes away and if so then a fix will be needed for JPY?

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

This might sound stupid... Unplug your wireless router, leave for 30 seconds. Now plug back in, wait for the lights to stop dancing around and try connecting again.

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

You need to rule out your net work, you can do this by takeing your security of you network or nip to your local mcdonalds, also for some reason Negaer routers suck. The dhcp cliant needs renewing Belkin routers seem to be fine but you need to rule out your router

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

Cheers for the replies.  Right I tried to disconnect the router but that didn't work.  I am using a Netgear router, but haven't had a problem previously.

Just should add that this was working initially after I updated to JPY but I didn't do an immediate factory reset.  It was only after the reset that I couldn't connect again.

Ndj how did you fix the problem with the netgear router?

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

Right For some reason and it only effects Netgear Routers you can get it to work on a static connection but for some reason the DHCP does not work with the phone.

DHCP works by allocating a IP address now every device has a "mac address" nothing to do with Apple, the mac address stays the same, Now when you phone is on your router it remembers the mac address and should give the phone the same ip address it had last time, But for some reason the Netgear Routers don't, and you can't manually do it, This is why your phones says obtaining ip address, The routers that are effected are well any white ones, I have tested all the mainstream routers Even the BT ones work ok The new Netgear do work but only set to transmit on the "N" Range, When i was on 2.1 i noticed this my phone would lock then just randomly loose the signal, My mate had the same problem so we went to Argos and got two Cheap Belkin Routers £30 each and all sorted so i did some checking and the DHCP is all i could find.

Every one on here that has have or still has problems have Netgear routers, Netgear blame the phone but i blame the firmware on the router there technical Department are no help, I have even found my old Linksy router and that works but it is mega slow

This is why McDonalds is good lol cos of the free WIFI you phone will connect first time they use Sisco routers NOT CHEAP

To be onest any router other then Netgear work

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

Cheers Ndj, that's useful.  Any idea why it did work and now doesn't though?  Guess I may have to get a new router but pretty annoyed I have to do that when it was working fine before and works for everything else connected to it.

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

Wifi on phones will always bee a problems Laptops can cope as they have a better receiver and transmitter but as people want faster and faster speeds Tec has to change now there three main bands "g" "b" and Now "N" and also you have your channel now the main channel that routers use are 1 6 and 13 you can try and change your channel six is the default channel but i use one. a handy app is wifi analyser this will tell you if you have any clash as well and what channel also proves you wifi works.

I tried changing the channel on the router, but it still won't connect.  The phone was ok when I when into McDonalds earlier, so will have to consider changing the router.  Unless any other Netgear users out there no some miracle fix?

Also I can even connect my PSP to the router so incredibly frustrated that the phone won't.........!

Have you tried resetting the router itself? Usually done by inserting a pen into a small hole at the back of the router.

This will restore the router to factory settings, so make sure you know the log in details. Usually password admin, username admin. Make sure you know how to access the settings page of the router, usually http//192.168.1.1

You may need an ethernet cable to connect your pc to change your settings and configure the wireless security.

If you google your router model you will find all the instructions you need.

Re: Wi-Fi connection problem

Mr Soup Dragon, you're a star!

I reset the router from the back and re-connected my phone and seems to be working now!  The only difference is that it is using WPA-PSK whereas before it was WEP.  I have absolutely no idea what that actually means but if I have connection I'm not that bothered.

Thanks for everyone for the suggestions and advice, much appreciated.

Hi mrfish,

Put simply, in case you hadn't already looked it up, WPA-PSK is much newer and far more secure than WEP. They are some of the security protocol types for wifi networks.
